She picks a scone up from the plate and rips a chunk off, shaking off the crumbs that fall, and perches forward now, elbows on her knees as she takes a bite of the smaller piece. A smile pulls a little wider.]

Don't tell me it took you six months to get control of that tail. [Listen, she has to make up for all that missing time somehow!] Glad you managed. I remember it was a hassle last I was here.

This is a man possessed of many wise words, and these linger a while with Vex, who settles for an agreeable "hmmm" in response. One might argue their meeting here is fate, after all. And there must be some acceptance of the situation before one can reasonably expect to change it.

She can't help but notice the demure glance down, the colours changing in the face of her casual blasphemy. Taking the Gods' names in vain is hardly much of a sin back home (save, perhaps, in Vasselheim), but clearly Lan Xichen has some level of devotion to the gods of his home world to react this way. Even if said gods wouldn't approve of what he does for a living.

A bit weird. But Vex has lived with weirder in her time. ]

I'd appreciate it. He is very good at disappearing, but hard to miss once he makes himself known. [for a moment, her expression twists, uncertain, a pang for her closest family bond. Percy was here, alone, for a year. How long might she be here without her twin? They've never been more than a handful of days apart..] He'll be looking for me, for certain.

That's around the same time as someone I know. [ Now Jean's wondering if Eren was also one of the first taken by the mirrors, or if they know each other from being here together for so long. It's a big city though, so it's unlikely. ]

A. Arrival

Kai doesn't have very much time to consider the circumstances he's in or what the hell he's doing in this place, because he didn't arrive here on his own. Instead of having time to take in the new environment, he's dealing with a clawful of extremely pissed off cat.

Newt makes a swipe at Kai's leg before he takes off. The cat's an ugly thing - a notch missing from its left ear, one leg shorter than the rest, fur a mix of browns and grays. Kai, on the other hand, is a little prettier, with purple eyes, delicate features, and pointed ears.

He takes off after the cat. "Dammit, come back here."

B. The Haven

Kai's wrangled his cat back into his arms, and if Newt keeps swiping at him that's fine, Kai can heal. He's pretty sure this is all some sort of dream - not a nightmare, really, but not exactly a good dream - but that doesn't mean he's going to leave Newt to fend for himself.

Even if holding the cat means he only has one hand free for a gun. And this is definitely a gun drawn sort of situation, someone's city or not. At least he's not pointing it at anyone yet, just sort of generally using it as a point of emphasis.

"So what's really the deal with this place?"

C. Cirque

Kai has just lost the ring toss for the fifth time in a row, and he's not exactly in a good mood about it. "Come on," he says. "I know this thing is rigged."

He frowns darkly back at it while he walks away.

"I just wish I didn't have the feeling it was rigged with fucking magic," he mutters, not really bothering to talk under his breath.

D. Suspicious Activity

He'd offered to go undercover to find out more information about these cultists - maybe a little different than a problem Kai would have handled as a Stalker, but at least it's something he can do - and Kai's starting to think he should have tried shooting them, rather than reasoning with them.

They'd threatened him, thrown some kind of magic at him, and while it hadn't taken him apart at the seams like elfin magic does, it did put a word on him, to show everyone his fault. Yeah, whatever, but people had been giving him looks as he passes them, so eventually he stops to look at his reflection in a shop window. The word "monster" is printed on his forehead.

Kai can't help himself, he laughs at it.

[ Well, at least that gives some sort of tangible problem to solve. He's not all that great with the esoteric and ethereal. ]

Well, shit don't just come out of nowhere.

[ There's a terrible comment to be made about asses, but thankfully for Lan Xichen's soul, Nero foregoes it thanks to the upsetting idea that "he too will change". Nope. No way. Nero outright scoffs at that and takes a step back. ]

Uh, no. No way am I letting someone play mad scientist with my DNA.

[ One attempt of that is more than enough in his life. ]

Wait, wait--what? They're takin' stuff from us too?

[ Oh hell no. That's the opposite of okay. Suddenly, Nero doesn't look like he wants to stand around and talk it out. He looks back and forth across the room before rightfully stomping out.

Is he going to test this theory that he's lost some abilities? Yes, yes he is.

Just...not inside while people are having a mini-conference. For his apparent lack of manners, he's not going to do that. Outside of the main building has more room, anyway. That will be his reasoning. ]

[Frankly, there's never really a good time for this sort of thing, and Onni is glad that Reynir is telling him and not keeping it a secret. When Reynir says that Lalli was 8, Onni takes a breath and holds it, keeps holding it as Reynir goes on to explain that he'd seen everything that happened, about Hilja and Ensi, about the three of them leaving the island together. Parts of that are things that Onni had never seen - in fact, he hadn't seen most of it, he'd been asleep and only heard later from Lalli how everything had gone. Part of him is still ashamed that he'd slept while everything went so wrong, but at the same time, he knows that if he hadn't, he and Tuuri would have been at the celebration along with everyone else and would have died just like everyone else.

And it isn't as if he refuses to talk to anyone about what had happened, it isn't as if it's a secret. At home in Keuruu, everyone had known, had heard about it, entire safeguard systems had been changed because of what had happened in Onni's village. It wasn't something he'd needed to talk about, not as one of only three survivors from Toivosaari - they had always been a little conspicuous because of it. It wasn't something he'd kept secret in any sort of purposeful way, and he imagines that it was probably the same for Lalli and Tuuri. It simply hadn't come up, and no one had asked. But knowing that Reynir had seen it all happen first-hand leaves Onni feeling somewhat...vulnerable. He isn't angry about Reynir knowing, he isn't embarrassed, he isn't hurt about it, but he does feel strangely exposed.

Glancing up, he can see the expression on Reynir's face, and he exhales slowly, head swimming slightly from having held it for just slightly too long. For a few moments he's just quiet, and then he shakes his head, looks down at the sandwich he's still holding, and then back up at Reynir.]

Ah. Well.

[A pause, and he puts his food down onto the plate, his hunger gone for the moment.]

There must have been a reason you had to know, at that moment.

I was part of Homra, under the Red King, so we had fire. everyone in Homra could use it differently - they found a way that worked for them. Something that was unique to them. It was just power - the King's power - to us. Not magic.

[It isn't a good enough shot. There is a part of Sephiroth, ingrained into permanence, that had always exceeded expectations and remains conditioned to do so. It was the result of being raised against an ever-growing array of testing, the baseline for success lifted higher and higher, until his own excellence had become so redundant that even the science department loosened their grip on him. For a man like this, to see himself miss such a simple shot is offensive to his sensibilities, an affront to his own capabilities. A personal slight, despite knowing that magic would make his shot go askew.

Falling into the median of average and predictable is simply not something he's used to.

The game attendant, however, doesn't appear too threatened -- but they also aren't foolish, waving one hand dismissively and sinking the other into a small basket of miniature prizes. Look, it's just a game. You lost a few cunes, but the point's to have fun. You can do that, right? The prize-hand comes up and flings a little stuffed toy in their general direction. It arcs towards Nico's head.

Sephiroth's eyes follow the plush's movement on instinct, landing squarely on Nico and her comment about ice cream the same time it makes contact. He doesn't appear particularly amused.]

Ah, I got here earlier. There's only one way to find Bondmates for future use, and that's a questionnaire. (he hasn't gotten many bites, but he also looked like he was in the advance stages of vampirism before he even arrived. can he blame others?) Gotta' make sure no weaklings slip through the gaps, wouldn't you agree?

Though, it is true that I'd be willing to help with finding housing. There's not much to go on right now.

[ It takes a few seconds for Zack to process that the balcony is Cloud's sleeping space. Oh. Well, that shouldn't surprise him. If it came down to a lack of space, Cloud is the sort of person who would take the more inconvenient option, especially if it meant allowing Aerith to have a room to herself. Zack hasn't seen the two of them interact with each other just yet, but he has a pretty good idea of how it would look, having spent a decent amount of time with both of them.

The mention of their third (nocturnal) housemate, Nier, draws Zack's attention. Thus far, all he really knows is that the guy likes swords and Cloud and Aerith both like him well enough to live with him. Which is probably all he needs to know, come to think of it.

Especially when Cloud's voice becomes that slightest bit more urgent, insisting that there are details Zack needs to be brought up to speed on. With a nod, he takes a seat, turning to Cloud as he begins his story.

"I need to tell you about what happened since you were gone." Something about the phrasing there seems off. Gone, as in dead, Cloud must mean. And he doesn't know anything, not when he hadn't been alive to see it. Those tiny details start to prickle at the back of Zack's mind, but for now he focuses in on what Cloud has to say.

Especially since the tale Cloud spins turns out to be the most Zack has ever heard him say in one sitting, by a long shot.

It's a lot to take in, to say the least, but Zack doesn't interrupt. First, joining up with new branch of AVALANCHE, and Tifa had decided to be a part of that too. Zack can't really take much issue with the idea to stick it to Shinra, not after how profoundly they'd betrayed him. The news about Sector 7 adds some heaviness to his shoulders. He'd spent enough time in the slums (Sector 5 more than Sector 7, but still) that he takes this as a blow.

Worse that that? The revelation that Shinra got their hands on Aerith. She'd dodged them for so long, allowed to live a relatively normal life with Elmyra, tending to her flowers. But now Zack realizes that couldn't have lasted -- and so starts the train of events that lead her straight to her death at Sephiroth's hands. It's not that he doesn't focus in on the other details, the long journey that Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, and their other friends had embarked on. But that's the part that sticks with him.

It's good to have a concrete answer about what had happened in Nibelheim, too. During his escape from the mansion it had been disorienting to see the town still standing as if nothing happened, but it's not like he'd had a lot of time to consider the how or why of that situation. Zack nods at that part, briefly relieved that at least one question has been answered for him.

When Cloud begins to explain how he was losing control of his own actions, drawn toward Sephiroth and forced to do his bidding, Zack leans forward to grab for his hand. He just holds it at first, letting it rest in his palm as the story continues. People like Tifa and Barret had been able to stop Cloud from doing too much harm to Aerith (or worse), but when it came to handing over the Black Materia, the key to Sephiroth's insane plan...

Of course Hojo had played a hand in it, had somehow managed to orchestrate it all. He'd known exactly what to say to Cloud to drive him to make that choice (and surely Sephiroth's influence had played some part in it too, regardless of what Cloud insists). Zack may be exhausted after sitting through so many twists and turns, but he defintiely doesn't hate Cloud. His grip tightens around Cloud's hand, squeezing it gently. ]

I don't hate you, Cloud. He held us for five years, poking and prodding and digging into our heads. [ Zack doesn't have to mince words with Cloud when it comes to their time in the mansion's basement, not like he would with anyone else. They'd both been there. ] To be honest, there was a while there when I wasn't sure whether or not you were ever gonna be okay. The mako poisoning, it was... [ He trails off for a moment, gaze dipping down to his lap as he lets out a breath. ]

People like Hojo, they're the ones I hate, all right? Not you. And if Aerith says that you're able to come back from that and save the Planet, then you know she's right. She wouldn't lie about that.

[ Cloud's going to save the world. If he stumbled along the way, if evil people took their chance to manipulate him and confuse him, that's not his fault. And what matters to Zack more than anything is that Cloud is here, alive and okay, able to talk to him and hold a conversation after everything they were put through in that lab.

Zack moves his hand up to Cloud's shoulder, takes hold of it and gives it a shake as he leans in, his eyes impossibly blue. ]

You know you're not some failed experiment either, right? You're you. You're Cloud. Don't forget that.

[ Her consideration is appreciated; he can tell where she is with a decent amount of accuracy, but it's a little harder in an unfamiliar space. Shu turns towards the basket and kneels down to dig around in it, pulling out a jingly mouse. ]

You grabbed...one of the dangling toys, right? Try swishing it back and forth.

[ He tosses the mouse towards the kitten nearest him. It wiggles its butt for a moment before pouncing on it, making the bell inside of it jingly wildly. ]

They're very easy to entertain. Harder to wear out, but...That's alright.

[ Ann watches the remains of the sundae tossed into the trash with a dismayed frown. There was still a little left in there, someone should have enjoyed it before throwing it away! But even she isn't so addled that she'll eat food that's been in the trash, thank goodness.

The question, however, diverts her attention back to the older girl, her (chocolatey) expression turning puzzled. ]

Because...I wanted to?

[ Yes, this is the sort of lesson that humans learn as toddlers, that they can't take things without permission just because they want them, but that bit of wisdom seems to be lost on Ann at the moment. She is genuinely perplexed. ]

[ The plush was clearly chosen because it reminded her of him. Especially the ears. While she does notice the change of tone, she doesn't quite realize the embarrassment, thankfully for him. ]

[ It was all Seox. She didn't do anything. And she wishes she could do something, even some small effort. It's impossible, in her current state.

As Seox checks behind her, she can guess who he might be searching for. If Lloyd had come along, she would have kept him concealed in the shadows. Her grip tightens around the two stuffed animals. ]

Lloyd isn't here. [ The automaton was missing before she arrived. She tries not to dwell on Lloyd's absence for too long, knowing she has to trust in the Captain. ] ...I've seen Siegfried and I heard about Rosetta. And now you're here too. It's not so sad anymore...
