Who: Enkidu & Diarmuid - Enkidu & Edelgard When: The beginning of the month Where: The Wilde What: Showing the treehouse & doing a quest Warnings: none yet
[When they stop it is awfully dark around them and when Edelgard asks them for some light it takes a while before they realize they have to light something. They are the witch, after all.]
Ah... [They turn around to look at something they can set on fire. They are able to conjure some fire when using the right focus. Some witches could create small orbs of light but alas, they're not that sort of witch.] ...a second.
[Carefully they break off a branch from a tree and start to mutter a spell. For a moment there's nothing but finally there is a spark, followed by a little fire.]
I hope the fire will catch on. The branch feels rather cold. I also don't think it's wise to walk around with it for too long. Who knows what it might attract.
[The larger the flame becomes, the more light it gives off.]
There is a small path there. Human children are the type that use paths.
[Edelgard watches, her eyes luminous in the dim light of Enkidu's flames. She draws herself upright, hovering upwards a little in a shifting swirl of mist. Peering around, she starts towards the path.]
If your spell indicates the path, then let's go that way. It will be easier to move on than undergrowth, too.
[Nevermind that it's probably a game trail, and predators hunt on game trails too.]
[Enkidu nods briefly. The ground is more even there and they could speed up significantly this way. After all, the child hasn't screamed again. They spin on their feet and start to sprint forward, holding the flame close to them and hoping they might not attract shades like light attracts moths.]
Follow me, Edelgard.
[Despite the dire nature of the situation their voice is calm and somewhat sure. Being (temporarily) bonded to someone else does give them a sense of steadiness underneath their feet, a reason to be more sure.
This time the way they move has lost some of its sluggishness and they hop forward quickly, running over the small path. Said path leads to the entrance of a cave and right before that entrance they hold still. Because that is where they see the child, and the creature that is planning to harm it.]
Perhaps you can let the child go. [It's a bit stupid, they know. There's no way to reason with Shades.
They take a step back and glance over their shoulder briefly to see if they can spot their companion.]
I do not know how to bind this creature. Do you perhaps have some skills I do not know of?
[After the entire Rathmore incident and the loss of their bonds they do not trust the Coven that much anymore. While curiosity still drives them to the library, the will to listen to their words and views isn't that strong anymore.
They have neglected their magic a little.]
Either the ice or the trees... [They muse softly to themselves while they crouch down and place both of their hands on the ground. Of course, there are other ways to summon their magic, but this feels the most familiar to them. The earth beneath their hands and, when they're lucky, their magic being able to command said earth.] ...Edelgard, all I want to ask from you is to get it away from the child. I will ask the trees if they are willing to bare their roots.
I have good aim. [They know their ballistics. It's important for a weapon, afterall.] The roots will tie its feet. Your axe will chop it up, I will grab the child.
[Edelgard nods grimly, axe raised, and moves in a blur of motion. She hits the Shade like a sledgehammer, battering at it with the inhuman speed of her charge and the heavy battle-armor she wears providing mass. The momentum of it sends the Shade caroming away, bounding hard off a tree and sending it reeling onto the ground.]
[It doesn't help that the ground is frozen solid and they have to dig their fingers in deep to be able to get some magic flowing. Yet Enkidu isn't the type that gives in that quickly. Definitely not in front of the one who has saved them and seen them at their most broken.
In a way they want to let her know that they're capable of something. Something different than constantly losing their bonds and waffling over bonding again while holding some odd grudge against the Coven.]
Yes.
[To be fair, it takes a while until they tap into the part of their magic that is stable and powerful when they focus on it but eventually roots fly from the ground, wrapping themselves around the Shade's feet and legs.
It is a satisfying sight. It feels familiar.]
You can attack it now!
[Slowly they get up, noticing that they're a little dizzy from releasing so much magic in one go. Still, they charge towards that child...allowing Edelgard to do the chopping work.]
[Edelgard smiles a cold, calculated smile as she sees the roots slip up to entangle the Shade. It is satisfying. Almost as satisfying as raising the axe.]
Get the child. I'll deal with the beast.
[And down Aymr comes, a brutal single stroke of the weapon that splinters bone and tears through flesh. The Shade barely has time to react, trying feebly to get an arm up to ward off the blow, to no avail.
A second strike follows, and then a third, just to be sure.]
[Enkidu dashes forward immediately. They can feel their body protesting a little bit but once they move it is gone. Quickly they grab the child by his waist and simply throws him over their shoulder.
When the child protests they barely respond, keeping their eyes on Edelgard hacking away at the Shade.
Perhaps it isn't so problematic to be a Beast instead of a Witch. If anything, they would pick such strength over all that magic.]
I think it is dead. I... [They stop speaking when the kid starts to whine loudly.] ...will you hush? Otherwise we might draw more of those creatures towards us. [Slowly they approach her.]
Let us head home as soon as possible... [A pause.] ...or are there certain parts of this Shade you want to take with you?
[After all, some things do sell on the more shadier parts of certain markets.]
But it will sell. After all...the fingers they chopped off my hand sold well on the black market.
[Still, is there time to dissect a body in the middle of the Wilde? The answer to that is probably 'nah'.]
Hmn...yes, let's go. [They hop towards her, still with the child flung over their shoulder.] I don't think I have the magical capability of handling more of these shades. [They're tired and it shows a little on their face.]

It's okay.
I have no magical talents here, unfortunately. That limits our options to stealing the child away, or killing the creature.
[She takes a step forward, Aymr gleaming in the dim light as she raises it.]
I think killing it might be for the best.

[She steps back, cleaning the blood from Aymr with a cloth that she discards.]
It's time we got this little one home, I think. Let us return.
