Who: Enkidu & Diarmuid - Enkidu & Edelgard When: The beginning of the month Where: The Wilde What: Showing the treehouse & doing a quest Warnings: none yet
[Enkidu has started to walk slower, aware of their surroundings. Most of the time there weren’t any Shades close, but they did not want to take the risk. Not now their magic was off and they were without a bond. They know very well that they’re not the most gifted witch and they’ve come to accept that.
Still, despite that, the forest had always made it so that they felt better. Even frozen and cold like it was now.]
Just follow me down this path.
[And the closer they come to the large tree, the more Diarmuid is probably able to see of the treehouse that is built between and on top of it.]
Look. [Their voice doesn’t have any emotion.] There it is. I wanted to show you earlier but…a lot of things happened.
[Whatever Enkidu misses, Diarmuid will make up for. Saying that, while a still immature witch, their endlessly impressive talents as a warrior will probably serve them better out here in the Wilde. You don't need to be a magical prodigy to have sharp reflexes and strength and his fellow witch is particularly blessed in those areas.
Regardless, he follows closely, as requested. The snow blanketing the ground is untouched and makes a satisfying crunch beneath his boots that seems all the louder in the frozen silence. Something about this kind of weather brings out the stillness in the world and Diarmuid is happy to let it wash over him. Gods, Enkidu probably needs it more than he does; they've been struck with such misfortune that even thinking on it makes his chest ache.
Their voice snaps him out of his thoughts.]
Hm?
[Diarmuid follows their gaze- and finds himself looking at one of the most charming little houses he's ever seen. It nests as naturally in the boughs of the tree as any nest and looks warm and inviting amid the cold. He can't help but step closer, putting a hand to the tree's enormous trunk.]
To think that this was hiding out here...! How wonderful! [Diarmuid glances back with a warm smile.] Did you have a hand in its building, Enkidu?
[The forest is dense here. The trees are high and growing close to one another. The search party didn’t go here and that is definitely for the best. It is obvious the Cwyld has been here. Not all life is gone, but the smell of death and decay is definitely hanging in the air. That, and the child that chose this way is either ridiculously brave or just quite a fool. Or both. A combination of both is definitely something humans can display.
Enkidu looks at Edelgard and smiles a little. In a way it feels good they’ve taken this potion to establish a temporarily bond. As if there’s ground underneath their feet again, a firm base of some sort. And they missed that feeling.]
Ah… I think…
[They want to continue with humming while trying to form a coherent sentence but a shrill scream pierces through the air. It isn’t far from them and it might even belong to a child in trouble…]
Asura built most of it. Together with another man called Nier. And I helped.
[Asura is gone as well and they keep his goodbye letter close to them. Perhaps, when they feel better they will read it again and indulge themselves by remembering all those good moments.]
It has been given to me now. I want you to know of it. [They crouch down and check if the rune spells Asura put up are still intact. They are.] We built it as a refuge for those who want to be away from the city but feel safe nonetheless. I know Cu once slept in a cave after the Rathmore incident.
[Enkidu starts to climb the small ladder that leads up to the first floor.]
It isn't warm inside now but I can make a fire. And I have brought some food with me. I am being a good host like this.
[Diarmuid nods as Enkidu speaks, smile faltering only when they mention Berserker's temporary disappearance and the horrors that preceeded it. Still, he's quick to recover it.]
Ah, like a sanctuary...
[It has the calming atmosphere of one, from the earthy smell of mulch and wood to the gentle hum of magic from the runes at the base of the tree.]
I would rest better knowing that Cú had somewhere safe to go should he choose to leave Aefenglom again. [Though Enkidu can't see Diarmuid, he'll hear the smile in his voice.] You've been an excellent host so far, yes.
[The forest is dense, but Edelgard is light on her feet, and a capable explorer. Enough time wandering in forgotten forests and lost ruins made her competent enough at this that she had no difficulty. She pushed through, leading the way with Aymr's eerie orange light.
Looking back as Enkidu speaks, she cocks her head. And then, the scream.]
[The first thing they do when they reach the first floor is check the wood a little, afraid that it might come apart at some point. They have repaired some things by themselves but Enkidu is in no way a handyclayman.]
I think we all need to have such a place, the city is a suffocating place made of concrete and rock. [That, and Enkidu prefers this place much more than their apartment in the city. Everything reminds them of Gil and they have found themselves in a bad state because of it lately.] And there are multiple beds and there is the possibility to bathe. [Enkidu moves a bit sluggish and it's obvious that they're tired.] If you want you can sit down. [They gesture at a wooden bench littered with pillows.] I will take care of the fireplace. Like a good host indeed.
[Compared to Edelgard's agility, Enkidu is a bit slower. Their steps are firm and their mind is focused but the loss of a bond has affected their strength. Still, they do not speak of it, they hop closer instead.]
I can.
[They look around themselves.]
I might be able to do a spell to track them down faster. It can uncover a trail. [Still, they could also start running in the direction of where the sound came from.] Or should we just go...?
[As strong a front as Enkidu is putting up, there's no missing the lethargy in their usually graceful movements or the weary hum of their voice. But it would be discourteous to call it out directly and so he opts for a softer method. Diarmuid is quick to put a hand on their shoulder to guide them towards the bench instead.]
No, please sit down. As a guest, it's only right that I do something for my host in turn.
[And, before they can argue, he heads over to the fireplace and begins to rearrange the wood and cinders within. A little kindling and a spell later, it flares to life with a corona of orange flames.]
There. Much better. [That done, he settles down beside the fire, one knee up against his chest.] Enkidu... be honest with me. How have you been doing since...?
[Enkidu blinks. As far as they know the host must take care of their guests. And even before they can turn this into a useless discussion of some sort Diarmuid is already busy with rearranging the wood before starting a small fire.]
It will take a while until it's warm here. The winters are rather harsh...the whiteness outside makes it almost as if I am looking through the windows of Chaldea's building.
[Finally Enkidu sits down as well, pulling up both of their knees while they start gazing into the fire.]
Hm... [They understand the question.] I am not well. [It is as simple as that.]
[Enkidu hums and nods shortly. The way to activate this is quite similar to the way they had always launched their attacks. They crouch down and mutter some soft words so they can channel some of their magic through the earth. Frozen or not, it still does the trick, especially now they're bonded for the time being.
It takes half a minute until small shining tracks appear, glowing yellow in the frozen ground.
When Enkidu moves to stand there's a hint of fatigue on their face, yet when they speak their voice sounds as neutral as ever.]
Let's go then.
[They lead her the way, following the glowing tracks with ease. Still, it shows that losing both of their bonds has left their body somewhat weakened. Normally Enkidu is faster when it comes to hopping through a forest.]
[Well, sort of. Not really. But Enkidu doesn't try and stop him so Diarmuid finishes up the job, occasionally stopping to prod at the burning wood with a poker.]
A winter in the middle of summer no less. [The mention of Chaldea catches his interest, though. He's heard of it in passing from its transient inhabitants several times now but he's still no closer to truly understanding what it was like or its purpose. Asking Berserker feels wrong: he's worked so hard to distance himself from that life that to bring it back up would be crass.] I still don't know much about Chaldea, truth be told.
[Diarmuid wants to ask more but there's a far more pressing issue at hand. A brief silence falls upon the room and then Diarmuid edges over to where Enkidu sits. Shoulder to shoulder, he shrugs off his cloak and drapes it across both of their shoulders for warmth- and no small amount of comfort.]
... I suspected as much. I'm sorry, it was insensitive to even ask.
[With Enkidu moving, Edelgard follows, moving deftly over and around the obstacles. At times her body shifts into mist, letting her pass through thorns and the like here in the darkened forest without issue.
The spell will lead the pair of them towards a clearing, though in the gloom it's hard to see what is up ahead.]
If you wish to know, my Master has summoned you to Chaldea as well. We are both of the lancer class. [They hum softly.] While it is you who actually holds a lance.
[Then they fall silent again, gazing at the fire that slowly starts to catch on. How strange is it to have company while it feels like there's no company at all?]
You are free to ask and I am free to choose if I will answer or not. I have chosen to answer. There is no reason to regret a question. If you do not ask them frequently you might miss something. And it shows that I am not doing well.
[When they look at Diarmuid there is a strange, sad smile on their face.]
Ah...right before Gil and I went to the Coven to undergo these rites, he gave me this flower crown. I knew he went out of the way to gather all these flowers and took the time to weave them together. And from that moment on I started to cherish this foolish wish...that perhaps we could have what you have with Cu. Not two beings tied to one another by an old story, or heroic spirits hoping to share a short moment with one another, fighting for their Master. But...perhaps something more human...an existence as a couple. As partners, as friends, as lovers.
[A deep sigh escapes their mouth.]
I find myself so... [How to describe it.] ...I yearn for that. Such a sensation. That warmth, this...sense of belonging. A home. And every time this need wells up inside of my being I get reminded of the fact that it is gone. I need to...rewrite myself in a way I do not know how to.
[When they stop it is awfully dark around them and when Edelgard asks them for some light it takes a while before they realize they have to light something. They are the witch, after all.]
Ah... [They turn around to look at something they can set on fire. They are able to conjure some fire when using the right focus. Some witches could create small orbs of light but alas, they're not that sort of witch.] ...a second.
[Carefully they break off a branch from a tree and start to mutter a spell. For a moment there's nothing but finally there is a spark, followed by a little fire.]
I hope the fire will catch on. The branch feels rather cold. I also don't think it's wise to walk around with it for too long. Who knows what it might attract.
[The larger the flame becomes, the more light it gives off.]
There is a small path there. Human children are the type that use paths.
[Edelgard watches, her eyes luminous in the dim light of Enkidu's flames. She draws herself upright, hovering upwards a little in a shifting swirl of mist. Peering around, she starts towards the path.]
If your spell indicates the path, then let's go that way. It will be easier to move on than undergrowth, too.
[Nevermind that it's probably a game trail, and predators hunt on game trails too.]
[Enkidu nods briefly. The ground is more even there and they could speed up significantly this way. After all, the child hasn't screamed again. They spin on their feet and start to sprint forward, holding the flame close to them and hoping they might not attract shades like light attracts moths.]
Follow me, Edelgard.
[Despite the dire nature of the situation their voice is calm and somewhat sure. Being (temporarily) bonded to someone else does give them a sense of steadiness underneath their feet, a reason to be more sure.
This time the way they move has lost some of its sluggishness and they hop forward quickly, running over the small path. Said path leads to the entrance of a cave and right before that entrance they hold still. Because that is where they see the child, and the creature that is planning to harm it.]
Perhaps you can let the child go. [It's a bit stupid, they know. There's no way to reason with Shades.
They take a step back and glance over their shoulder briefly to see if they can spot their companion.]
I do not know how to bind this creature. Do you perhaps have some skills I do not know of?
[After the entire Rathmore incident and the loss of their bonds they do not trust the Coven that much anymore. While curiosity still drives them to the library, the will to listen to their words and views isn't that strong anymore.
They have neglected their magic a little.]
Either the ice or the trees... [They muse softly to themselves while they crouch down and place both of their hands on the ground. Of course, there are other ways to summon their magic, but this feels the most familiar to them. The earth beneath their hands and, when they're lucky, their magic being able to command said earth.] ...Edelgard, all I want to ask from you is to get it away from the child. I will ask the trees if they are willing to bare their roots.
I have good aim. [They know their ballistics. It's important for a weapon, afterall.] The roots will tie its feet. Your axe will chop it up, I will grab the child.
[Edelgard nods grimly, axe raised, and moves in a blur of motion. She hits the Shade like a sledgehammer, battering at it with the inhuman speed of her charge and the heavy battle-armor she wears providing mass. The momentum of it sends the Shade caroming away, bounding hard off a tree and sending it reeling onto the ground.]
[It doesn't help that the ground is frozen solid and they have to dig their fingers in deep to be able to get some magic flowing. Yet Enkidu isn't the type that gives in that quickly. Definitely not in front of the one who has saved them and seen them at their most broken.
In a way they want to let her know that they're capable of something. Something different than constantly losing their bonds and waffling over bonding again while holding some odd grudge against the Coven.]
Yes.
[To be fair, it takes a while until they tap into the part of their magic that is stable and powerful when they focus on it but eventually roots fly from the ground, wrapping themselves around the Shade's feet and legs.
It is a satisfying sight. It feels familiar.]
You can attack it now!
[Slowly they get up, noticing that they're a little dizzy from releasing so much magic in one go. Still, they charge towards that child...allowing Edelgard to do the chopping work.]
[Edelgard smiles a cold, calculated smile as she sees the roots slip up to entangle the Shade. It is satisfying. Almost as satisfying as raising the axe.]
Get the child. I'll deal with the beast.
[And down Aymr comes, a brutal single stroke of the weapon that splinters bone and tears through flesh. The Shade barely has time to react, trying feebly to get an arm up to ward off the blow, to no avail.
A second strike follows, and then a third, just to be sure.]
[Enkidu dashes forward immediately. They can feel their body protesting a little bit but once they move it is gone. Quickly they grab the child by his waist and simply throws him over their shoulder.
When the child protests they barely respond, keeping their eyes on Edelgard hacking away at the Shade.
Perhaps it isn't so problematic to be a Beast instead of a Witch. If anything, they would pick such strength over all that magic.]
I think it is dead. I... [They stop speaking when the kid starts to whine loudly.] ...will you hush? Otherwise we might draw more of those creatures towards us. [Slowly they approach her.]
Let us head home as soon as possible... [A pause.] ...or are there certain parts of this Shade you want to take with you?
[After all, some things do sell on the more shadier parts of certain markets.]
But it will sell. After all...the fingers they chopped off my hand sold well on the black market.
[Still, is there time to dissect a body in the middle of the Wilde? The answer to that is probably 'nah'.]
Hmn...yes, let's go. [They hop towards her, still with the child flung over their shoulder.] I don't think I have the magical capability of handling more of these shades. [They're tired and it shows a little on their face.]
