[Whatever Enkidu misses, Diarmuid will make up for. Saying that, while a still immature witch, their endlessly impressive talents as a warrior will probably serve them better out here in the Wilde. You don't need to be a magical prodigy to have sharp reflexes and strength and his fellow witch is particularly blessed in those areas.

Regardless, he follows closely, as requested. The snow blanketing the ground is untouched and makes a satisfying crunch beneath his boots that seems all the louder in the frozen silence. Something about this kind of weather brings out the stillness in the world and Diarmuid is happy to let it wash over him. Gods, Enkidu probably needs it more than he does; they've been struck with such misfortune that even thinking on it makes his chest ache.

Their voice snaps him out of his thoughts.]

Hm?

[Diarmuid follows their gaze- and finds himself looking at one of the most charming little houses he's ever seen. It nests as naturally in the boughs of the tree as any nest and looks warm and inviting amid the cold. He can't help but step closer, putting a hand to the tree's enormous trunk.]

To think that this was hiding out here...! How wonderful! [Diarmuid glances back with a warm smile.] Did you have a hand in its building, Enkidu?

[Diarmuid nods as Enkidu speaks, smile faltering only when they mention Berserker's temporary disappearance and the horrors that preceeded it. Still, he's quick to recover it.]

Ah, like a sanctuary...

[It has the calming atmosphere of one, from the earthy smell of mulch and wood to the gentle hum of magic from the runes at the base of the tree.]

I would rest better knowing that Cú had somewhere safe to go should he choose to leave Aefenglom again. [Though Enkidu can't see Diarmuid, he'll hear the smile in his voice.] You've been an excellent host so far, yes.

ay nw take as long as you need!

[As strong a front as Enkidu is putting up, there's no missing the lethargy in their usually graceful movements or the weary hum of their voice. But it would be discourteous to call it out directly and so he opts for a softer method. Diarmuid is quick to put a hand on their shoulder to guide them towards the bench instead.]

No, please sit down. As a guest, it's only right that I do something for my host in turn.

[And, before they can argue, he heads over to the fireplace and begins to rearrange the wood and cinders within. A little kindling and a spell later, it flares to life with a corona of orange flames.]

There. Much better. [That done, he settles down beside the fire, one knee up against his chest.] Enkidu... be honest with me. How have you been doing since...?

[Well, sort of. Not really. But Enkidu doesn't try and stop him so Diarmuid finishes up the job, occasionally stopping to prod at the burning wood with a poker.]

A winter in the middle of summer no less. [The mention of Chaldea catches his interest, though. He's heard of it in passing from its transient inhabitants several times now but he's still no closer to truly understanding what it was like or its purpose. Asking Berserker feels wrong: he's worked so hard to distance himself from that life that to bring it back up would be crass.] I still don't know much about Chaldea, truth be told.

[Diarmuid wants to ask more but there's a far more pressing issue at hand. A brief silence falls upon the room and then Diarmuid edges over to where Enkidu sits. Shoulder to shoulder, he shrugs off his cloak and drapes it across both of their shoulders for warmth- and no small amount of comfort.]

... I suspected as much. I'm sorry, it was insensitive to even ask.

[The forest is dense, but Edelgard is light on her feet, and a capable explorer. Enough time wandering in forgotten forests and lost ruins made her competent enough at this that she had no difficulty. She pushed through, leading the way with Aymr's eerie orange light.

Looking back as Enkidu speaks, she cocks her head. And then, the scream.]

...We should hurry. Can you keep up?

Do it. If you can get the spell working, then that'll make it that much easier.

[She's happy to take charge, and it is always, always better to go in with a plan than to charge blindly forward and hope.]

A momentary delay to make certain we go where we need to go is better than just forging ahead.

I will follow your lead.

[With Enkidu moving, Edelgard follows, moving deftly over and around the obstacles. At times her body shifts into mist, letting her pass through thorns and the like here in the darkened forest without issue.

The spell will lead the pair of them towards a clearing, though in the gloom it's hard to see what is up ahead.]

Perhaps a little light?

True.

[Edelgard watches, her eyes luminous in the dim light of Enkidu's flames. She draws herself upright, hovering upwards a little in a shifting swirl of mist. Peering around, she starts towards the path.]

If your spell indicates the path, then let's go that way. It will be easier to move on than undergrowth, too.

[Nevermind that it's probably a game trail, and predators hunt on game trails too.]
unyieldingmarch: <user name=crimsonflower> (Stare Up)

It's okay.

[Edelgard is stepping up beside Enkidu when she's looked for. Reaching up to put a hand on her friend's shoulder, she levels the axe with the other.]

I have no magical talents here, unfortunately. That limits our options to stealing the child away, or killing the creature.

[She takes a step forward, Aymr gleaming in the dim light as she raises it.]

I think killing it might be for the best.

I can do that. Get ready, and go!

[Edelgard nods grimly, axe raised, and moves in a blur of motion. She hits the Shade like a sledgehammer, battering at it with the inhuman speed of her charge and the heavy battle-armor she wears providing mass. The momentum of it sends the Shade caroming away, bounding hard off a tree and sending it reeling onto the ground.]

Bind it, Enkidu!

[Edelgard smiles a cold, calculated smile as she sees the roots slip up to entangle the Shade. It is satisfying. Almost as satisfying as raising the axe.]

Get the child. I'll deal with the beast.

[And down Aymr comes, a brutal single stroke of the weapon that splinters bone and tears through flesh. The Shade barely has time to react, trying feebly to get an arm up to ward off the blow, to no avail.

A second strike follows, and then a third, just to be sure.]

I am no alchemist.

[She steps back, cleaning the blood from Aymr with a cloth that she discards.]

It's time we got this little one home, I think. Let us return.
