[ . . . that’s actually pretty hardcore. eren blinks for a minute, in thought and putting the pieces together in his head. a childhood friend calling him useless and then . . . using it as a reminder to never give up. wow. ]

You never gave up when they called you that, did you?

[ he doesn’t quite get the context either, and considering where he’s from— it just sounds dangerous (self absorbed), making eren frown with concern. ]

Um, people back home, most of them have superpowers - that means there's some careers other world apparently don't have...like, being a superhero who fights villains - people who use their powers to hurt others.

[ her clothes were different from the people who lived here, as was his— well, mildly. his long coat uniform and tastes were probably closer to the Victorian style than not. kaede, on the other hand . . . ]

[Kaede shrugged, a nonchalant gesture for such a heavy subject. It was still something that felt...messy. Kouta said he hated her, but saved her all the same. She refused to let him die, and died herself in the process.

[ he’s only recently figured out radio calling but it’s still so new that registering seeing someone in a watch doesn’t happen.

his lips pull a deepening frown, while brows mark question. explain!! ]

[scaling]

[ Yeah, that was unlikely to clear anything up. ]

It lets you talk to someone over distances. See them, too.

[ There's a pause and then he's moving again, looking down at his watch: ] Actually—

[ It's easier to demonstrate than try to put it into words. Finding the method for calling a previous contact only takes a little bit of poking around, and soon Eren will find an incoming video call on his comm. ]

[ —”incoming call”, it says. so far, akira is telling the truth. he’s getting a call, looks between his vibrating watch and akira . . . then promptly smashing the very button that caused his new friend to eject from the watch’s imprisonment. a reject call, so to speak.

except eren. doesn’t. know that, does he. ]

[ he holds it to his ear like one would hold the end of a radio speaker, and stares at akira expectantly. now what, wizard? ]

[ not— actually pointing fingers, he’s only speaking the hard truth, and only truth he knows. all while munching angrily (was it really angrily or is that just how his face is?) ]

Depends on which guy you are.

[ he blinks, with some slight surprise— but when he gets a better look at mikleo’s face and strays from his tunnel-vision of curiosity, there’s something . . . small, in his chest, and it constricts. ]

[ eren was usually one to feign his feelings on certain topics with bravado, when for other things that don’t quite matter, well, they don’t quite matter, and he treats it as such. everyone’s different. ]

[reenforces]

[Mikleo stares right back up at him, his lavender eyes big and bright, but also calm. He's been through a lot and he won't deny that, but there's more determination than sadness. When Eren apologizes, though, his expression softens.]

What are you apologizing for? [He lifts his free hand and jabs harmlessly at Eren's chest.] I didn't tell you all of this so you could feel bad about being human or something like that. I thought it might help with understanding what we're up against, that's all.

You don't have to worry about me. I've been traveling alone for a few decades now, and I'm fine.

[ you know the sound that happens when you punch spongebob

eren’s so ripped underneath that’s probably what happens in terms of feeling. he can’t say “ow”, but his weight shifts, watching him with surprise nonetheless. ]

It’s— not that. [ a beat ] I got caught up and forgot about you.

[ if that . . . made sense. to clear up, he’ll add: ]

I don’t want to treat this like some story when for you— it’s as real as war is for me.

[ fae seem to be as rare as dragons, looks like. well, at least from what he’s heard. he wonders briefly if they have something to do with it, considering . . . that was a fae party.

[ what once was short and neat (sort of) is now long and messy, so obviously he has to make an unnecessary rude comment about it. that's just how it is. ]

You weren't paying attention? To your face? [ suspicious. ] For like three months?

[ you know what, whatever. not his problem. as long as Eren's alive, it's not his problem. so he lets it go (for now), shifting his attention to the watch. he eyes it for a second before looking blankly back up at Eren. ]

so confused, but he’s not about to throw another question at him before answering the one given. he still has manners? he still has those. sort of. ]

Going back through the mirror, other mirrors, ah— This watch, and asking questions. [ eren holds the watch out. ] The— head witch? [ it’s still weird to say witch like they’re real, but. such is their life, now. ] Really know what’s happening.

[ the mental image of Eren trying to get inside a mirror comes to him unbidden. he might chuckle a bit if that was a thing he did, like, ever. ]

What did you do, punch them?

[ also an entertaining mental image. it's not helpful, though, so he drops the mocking tone. ]

They'll figure it out. They have to. I shouldn't need to tell you we can't be wasting our time here.

[ eren can’t help but to make a face— as if. disappointed? he’s disappointed. ]

That’s no different from the planes back home.
