Event Log: June, What Lies Beneath
Down, Down, Down
The poorly-lit tunnel leads steadily downward. The way is marked by their gracious hosts to be, with arrows drawn in softly-glowing algae painting the walls so there is no mistaking which way to go; a good thing, because the deeper the party goes, the more tunnels branch off of the largest one, twisting and turning into the dark. It takes some hours to reach a familiar cavern lit with algae and glowing crystals, a herd of the velvet wormipedes idly milling about the small lake and stream that led into town in the dream. Much nicer long boats are set up and waiting to take them deeper, along with respectfully quiet Monster guards to steer them. They take a slightly different route from the dream, but before long, they reach the curtain of grayish green moss that dangles down into the water, stretched across the wide tunnel exit like a membrane. It parts on its own as the boats pass, though beware if you are infected by the Cwyld - it will not allow passage, only reach out long, tough tendrils to try and envelop you, the touch of it burning acid-bright where it is harmless for those uninfected. Past the curtain of strange moss, the cavern city opens up before them, vast and spacious, dimly lit with more algae, crystals, and softly glowing orbs of magic. It's like being plunged into an eternal twilight, somehow soft, cast in gentle colors. The boats bypass the markets this time, drifting farther down a branching stream into the city proper, to dock next to stone platforms. The winding streets and flowing canals branch out all around them with no rhyme or reason, the city sprung up around the natural layout of the caverns rather than the other way around. Buildings are carved out of tall stone spires, the windows and doors covered in fluttering silk, many of which are pulled away so that fascinated locals can peer out at the scene unfolding. The Matriarch herself comes to greet the group, ringed at the back by spear-carrying guards, all Monsters. A tall, long-limbed Arachne woman bearing battle scars and stark white hair, she looks perhaps in her 30s, and speaks with a booming, commanding voice, amplified by a charm. As she speaks, ten Wilders are released from silk rope bonds and nudged to join the Mirrorbound; they're a little roughed up, perhaps, and shaken, but none are seriously injured. A few Monsters also make the rounds, placing copper tokens in the hands of ten individuals. "Welcome, travelers! This meeting was foretold and so it has come to pass. During your stay you will be treated as our honored guests. You may come and go as you please, but we ask that you use the same tunnel you entered through; we have not yet re-secured the other entrances from Cwyld nor the tribes. I would hate for danger to befall you while you are under my care." Her smile is wide, her eight eyes bright, and her teeth are very sharp. "We have prepared temporary residences for your use. I hope you will stay for the celebrations. I look forward to meeting with some of you very soon." Notably, she does not mention the surface where from the Mirrorbound came, and those around her do not ask. |
I. The City
Mirrorbound, as guests of the Matriarch, are given nearly free run of the city, allowed to explore such locations as the marketplace, the library, the shops, the schools (the Arena for Monsters and the Academy for Witches), and the tunnels and caverns outside the protective moss barriers. The only places they (and most locals) are expressly barred from are the Matriarch's audience hall, the upper level of the library, and the guards' barracks.
Those who lost items to the burrowing hyenas at the Northern Outpost some months ago should keep an eye out: the hyenas are fairly common down here, serving the roles of pets or working dogs for Underground citizens, and a few merchants deal in more interesting goods. The missing items can be found scattered across some stalls, and the merchants will gleefully tell perusers that these things come from the surface, aren't they fascinating? Don't you want to buy? Luckily, it shouldn't be too hard to get your things back. They'll take all manner of interesting trinkets in trade. b. Library
If one has endless time, the scrolls can offer a look at life Underground: historical accounts of past Matriarchs, brave warriors and battles against nomadic tribes or hideous beasts, their history as they know it, scrolls on offensive and defensive magic for Witches, fighting techniques for Monsters, information on their unique flora and creatures that can be found outside the city, and even plenty of fiction - sword and sorcery novels all set in the tunnels and the city. It's just a bit difficult to find what, specifically, you're looking for, because if there's any kind of organization, it only makes sense to the deep-dwelling denizens. Maybe make it a team effort! You'll also need some simple translation spells, because their system of writing is quite different to the common system in Aefenglom; even then, it may not be accurate on older scrolls. c. II. The Tunnels
Those who do much wandering may notice something going on as well; the guards stationed at each tunnel mouth can often be found talking to each other in low voices about an unknown red algae that seems to be growing on the protective moss. It can be found primarily around the lesser-used tunnels so far, starkly bright against the dull green, and this seems to be a point of concern...
b. The Wild Underground
As well, the nomad tribes roam the less-civilized tunnels and caverns. These are small bands of usually Monsters of different types in mixed groups, though some can be found dragging humans along with them. Nearly all of them are some degree of feral, and plenty bear Cwyld infections in different stages of seriousness. They don't stop to ask questions before they'll attack anyone, including each other, in hopes of robbing them blind and leaving them for dead. As vicious and quick as they are, perhaps it's no wonder they value strength in the city? |
III. Graduation Day (21st - 23rd)
Small fights are also a tried and true tradition to show off one's abilities around this time of year. It serves multiple purposes: attracting a Bondmate, establishing a place in the unspoken hierarchy of the city, and working out problems with others. Monsters are more likely to start brawls than Witches, though it isn't wholly uncommon to bear witness to two rival Witches throwing spells at each other in an alleyway over their grievances. They're more likely to be stopped, as magic can be quite destructive.
b. Exhibitions
At the Arena, a massive sunken ring with stone benches for spectators ringing the whole of it, young Monsters learn combat skills, with and without weapons, and how to harness their unique physiologies in the dangerous world of the Underground. Their yearly exhibition fights take place all through the three days of the New Year, and young Monsters battle each other til first blood to the cheers and jeers of citizens (and more importantly, Witches) come to watch. The longer the battle, the more impressive it is - and Monster Mirrorbound will have no shortage of eager opponents wanting to test their skills against the unknown. Generally, the fights result in bruises, small cuts, and little else, but rivals for the same Witch might take it farther on purpose before they're wrenched away from each other by the teachers. Meanwhile, at the Academy, the tallest stone spire building in the city, young Witches learn magic from a young age. It isn't exactly the same as magic taught at the Coven, but many concepts are similar - barriers, evocation, enchantments meant for weapons or shields, healing, most of the magic they're taught at this younger age is for combat, protection or practical purposes. They only learn more frivolous magics after graduation. Much like their Monster counterparts, they give solo or duet shows of their flashier and more impressive magical skills in the courtyard, with many citizens coming to watch and take stock of the new generation. Mirrorbound Witches may find themselves being cajoled into putting on a show of their own by curious locals wanting to know what kinds of magic are taught elsewhere. |
IV. Aefenglom - Litha (21st - 23rd)
Many of the activities from last year return, better than before, including the brothels opening up their doors (showing off all the wonderful new styles in lingerie!), collecting flowers to put under one's pillow in order to dream of future partners, and wandering the hedge mazes that have been magically constructed in certain parts of the city. Seeing off ships happens regularly as well, citizens setting floating candles into the harbor and river to wish them luck.
b. Predictive Pools
As a reminder, all sexual content should be clearly marked in comment headers, or else moved to a comm-locked log or personal inbox! Be good to each other. |
Welcome to June's Event Log, What Lies Beneath! The Underground will be open until mid-July at minimum, and possibly longer. Characters can come and go if they're willing to make the trip multiple times. As always, please direct your questions here! The NPC threads will take place here. Aaand, the Action Tracker is right here! Make sure to let us know what your characters have been up to, good and bad, by July 7th, as this will help determine how Mirrorbound-Underground relations might proceed in the future!

He focuses his attention on her, but only fleetingly, grinning like an idiot even still. The robot hums, all of that overabundant energy shocked right out his system. In its wake is a whole lot of nothing. He can scarcely reflect over what he'd been doing, save for the fact that it was fun, it was distracting, it was a rush...
Later, he might consider that he was being more than just a bit loopy toward her. Right now is not that moment.
He springs to his feet in one motion, unwisely. He manages, but stumbles backwards, metal slamming into brick with a resounding crash. He is beauty, and he is grace.]
H-Hmmmm...? Y... Yes, darling?
[He looks around, confused. Mettaton holds himself against this wall, trying to get his legs to stand straight and not knock-kneed.]
no subject
Whoa, take it slow before you get hurt! [Again.] But...how are you feeling?
[Are you no longer wanting to chase? Mira's cautious considering but her concern kind of overrides it. There were a few people looking their way but walk off after seeing that there isn't any harm done. Or at least she hopes not.]
no subject
The greater struggle is reclaiming each circuit and wire in his body, trying to recalibrate his awareness of it all. Truthfully, he's not artificial intelligence, so he doesn't pick up on it immediately... Being electrocuted always tends to feel like the first time he ever tried to operate this body. So he slumps somewhat against the wall.]
I'm having a wonderful time. [He says it with his eye closed, leaning his head against the wall. He doesn't know what he's doing, but he knows he was excited to be near Mira and it's Litha... So that must be accurate.] Don't worry about me, darling. I'm impossible to permanently damage. Given... I'm a robot. Haha.
[He flashes her a smile. He tries to remember what they were talking about before... this? But he can't. Not really. Maybe he was asking her what she wanted to do. That sounds about right. To divert the attention away from her worry, he "repeats" what he thinks was a question he had, at some point.]
Wh... What was it you said you'd like to do, gorgeous?
no subject
[Mettaton, you might be weird and say you'll be fine but it doesn't mean that she will stop worrying. And now this is where it will get awkward. Didn't he remember that she didn't want to be in this place? That she was trying to get away from all the forced love being shoved down her throat? Mira honestly should just go and just be done with it but she cannot just leave him behind like this. After all, she is responsible for him being like this right now. Or so she believes.]
I didn't say.
[She tugs at her arm, looking off to the side. She doesn't want to stay but she doesn't want to leave Mettaton alone. That's not how you treat a friend.]
I...don't know what I want to do.
no subject
He does this through sheer force of will alone, and he smirks at her, cocksure, but eye unfocused.]
Is that so. Yes... Right. I remember.
[Mettaton acts like he remembers her having not told him what she wanted. Then he remembers all at once his odd behavior over the past few minutes toward his friend, and stares at the sky in realization, ears perking up. Oh, no.]
..... Ah. It seems I've gotten a little... Wrapped up. In the festivities...
[He's still smiling, but it's a vacant smile. Yes... Caught up in the festivities. Caught up in the craze of Litha. . . ? (MTT is shoving the thought of the Underground so far from his mind that denial in the dictionary is next to his face.)]
You know how it is. Crazed with love! Ahahaha... Are you all right, Mira?
[He regards her directly, eye focused, composure neat. Beginning the dreadful realization that he has something to apologize for: namely, his behavior uncontrolled. What got into him...?! He crosses his arms, standing evenly, as though no electrocution has even happened. Good as ever.]
no subject
The fact that he smiles doesn't throw Mira off, it just gets a stare back and a fold of her arms. She knows that's a lie because she had yelled that she wanted to get away from all of this. And it worries her that she did much more damage than she had anticipated. A little wrapped up?! He was even worse than usual! And it seems that he's aware of it now. Poor guy.]
I'm fine. It's not the worst I've been through.
[Physically at least. She tries to give him a smile in return but the worry is still etched on her face. If this is what love truly is, then she has some serious questions. Mainly is this truly the actual power of the Flame in the Abyss?]
Will you be?
no subject
So quickly she went from staunchly determined to return to her office, he recalls, to dwelling here for his sake. His sake, despite his loss of control — and it was no small wonder that she should've felt inclined toward running. It's a way to get company, that's for sure...
To her question, he doesn't even need to think. He nods.]
I'll be fine. I'm always fine... haha.
[To emphasize just how fine he is, he leans against the wall behind him and raises a leg, tracing a claw along his thigh... sexily... god.]
Don't worry about me, darling. [A beat.] Litha isn't your cup of tea, is it?
[A prompt, assuming she's wanting to depart. He's at least not crazed and predatory anymore... He tips his head.]
no subject
[It's strange. She wouldn't pursue it as much if it were a stranger but what she says to him is blunt and straight to the point. Mira only feels she could say that because of recent events; it's not often that she breaks down and expresses her worries outside of her Bonded. It's what he deserves from her, no less.]
That's a little too late because that's what people do when they care about someone: we want to see them happy, we worry when they get hurt, we get scared if we think they're in danger, and we tell them if something is wrong because hiding it will always end up biting someone in the arse sooner or later. I can't do that to you.
[Which also means she too should speak about her own worries.]
I would not be so against it if the feeling was not forced on me. At that point, it is not love they are spreading but manipulation. You cannot force someone to feel love otherwise they will want to push back in means of protecting themselves. I knew from the beginning that this time was not good for me and decided to stay away because I didn't wish to be any kind of hindrance or cause harm for those wishing to celebrate.
And that's what happened. People trying to force the matter on me despite my attempts in being polite until it got too much. It would be fine if they left me alone but it didn't happen.
[Not only that, it sadly reminds her of times where her choice or her options didn't matter one bit. Can anyone blame her for feeling uncomfortable or trying to run? She should know about love, hells, that's the source of power used to fuel the Flame in the Abyss. But freely given, not forced.]
no subject
Mettaton's ears spring upright. At his core, the Puca is a very expressive robot. Almost uncannily so, and were he to have never claimed to have a soul, it would be... a lot of emoting done for an inorganic being. Mira's treated to the fleeting pleasure of a look of alarm, wide-eyed and smile screwing up as she calls him out for "Not Being Fine, Only Saying So To Assuage Her Worries." He's not on his best game in this moment, which makes acting all the harder to do.
For a moment, he contemplates telling her he has to go.
But then she continues on to talk about her worries, and he relaxes. Cants his head; his ears fold back some, neutral. One leans forward sometimes, as he appraises her feeling on Litha, love, and being forced into it all. He nods, pressing a curled finger to his lower lip.]
Ah... [One of his ears folds back. It's a hint of displeasure.] I didn't realize... you were being treated that way, here. Say. Do you think people would leave you be... if I remained at your side, darling?
[He doesn't feel so inclined to run, talking about her worries. It gives him a chance to collect himself. Even so, his ears flatten somewhat, the both of them in his sheepishness.]
But if you're set on returning... I understand. I thought you might find something pleasant out of it. ...Instead, you've just been made miserable, I see.
no subject
Or so she thinks.]
You would...do that for me?
[Perhaps...having someone with her would help her stomach this thing. Now that he's starting to understand a bit why she's been like this, perhaps Mira can try and give a little.]
It would be nice to have some company.
no subject
But of course, the Puca brightens up. It sounds to him like she's accepting the offer to stay, given steady company, and company is what he sought all along. Company to drown out the din of his worries, though not to address them. He smiles with his teeth and nods.]
Of course I would, Mira-darling. As long as you don't consider MY company to be so forced... Ha-ha. [He leans forward, eye blowing wide as he claps his hands together.] Ooh, do you want me to pretend to be Bonded to you and everything?? Given that this is Litha... nobody would dare to approach like that! What do you think? You would be VERY unforced, if people think you're already taken by Bond...
[he's a wellspring of ideas...]
no subject
You had asked and not assumed so I would say that this is not forced. [This time.] I think it will be alright.
[And then she stops because did...did he just propose to be like fake courting or something? Where in the hells did that idea come from? Was it because it was Litha and just as he said? But to her, it doesn't make much sense as well as her weighing how good his idea actually is. So assuming that she goes along with it, Mira can assume Mettaton will act as someone in love would be...but what about her? Her fear is that it will not be as convincing on her end and the idea just falls through. Probably not the best way to go but the offer is nice.]
Wouldn't they already be assuming we would be if we are already standing together? Besides, I'm not sure if I would be able to pull it off as good as you would.
no subject
I doubt many could compare to my talent for acting, yes... But don't sell yourself short, Mira-darling. I'm sure you know how to be Bonded. Just like I do. Yes! You do know how to act, based on experience!
[Does Mettaton know how to act... platonically Bonded? Is that a concept to him? Once again, a dubious plan. He thinks it's a good one as he smiles, though his smile's taken on an edge of smugness at his own genius.]
Though if you're content with my presence alone to indicate our, ahem, "Bond..." Then let my brilliant company express to all onlookers that you are Bonded, and occupied.
[Electrocution's a thing of the past as Mettaton stands tall at Mira's side, hands on his hips and with distance that exceeds distant company. He doesn't flinch at all, but when does Mettaton ever flinch at boundaries broken? Does he have any?]
no subject
[That's what she did with all her Bonded. Nothing really special because it just felt natural. Maybe on occasion she would lean into them or hold their hand. But Abyss help him he's trying. But she takes notice of his arms and decide to try something a little different: letting her one of her arms link with his.]
This is...alright with you?
[Well, if he says he doesn't like it, she'll find something else.]
no subject
Of course. You understand after all. Yes... Let this be our image of Bonding. They couldn't bother you as thoroughly now!
[Or what, Mettaton? You'll flirt with them? Anyway, it's a good thing he has such flexible, plentiful arm for her to hook into. He's rather tall, and for most it might be an awkward fit. His ears pull back into a satisfied neutrality, and he raises a finger of his other hand.
He's back on an emotional key that is satisfactory, all ills wrapped up nicely and stowed away. No more thoughts of what he just tried to do to Mira, no more thoughts of the reason for his tension that spurred him toward that behavior in the first place. The Puca is placated by contact and company.]
There are so many things they offer that I can't do. Things related to water... I'm sure you understand. [He doesn't tell Mira that he could, if he could shapeshift. Mostly because he doesn't want to have that discussion about why he can't shapeshift.] Instead, how about I take you to get something to eat? Or do you have something else you'd like to do, for fun?
[Not that going to her office and writing couldn't be fun... Just that he'd hoped to interrupt her routine a little. Mettaton, personally, loves to change things up. He doesn't see the harm. He's always wrangled his introverted friends and family into Doing New Things with him.]
no subject
It's alright, water isn't necessary to have fun. To be honest, I don't know what they have for fun other than brothels opening up and inviting people in.
[It's funny that he mentions food just as her stomach growls.]
...oh shite, I forgot about that didn't I?
no subject
[He says it as a playful taunt, patting Mira atop her head with his free hand, as he is wont to do with all humans who are shorter than he. Spoilers: most all humans are shorter than him.
It's fortunate, he supposes, that nothing worse came of this encounter. That dragging her here didn't seem to have any ill outcome, that he didn't lose himself to madness, that she was able to stop him as gently as she did. That he didn't have to think any more about what happened Underground — something he just doesn't want to consider.
This would be a pleasant way to distract. Mettaton's not only good at distractions, but he favors them from time to time.]
no subject
Divine? Uh, I would do just fine with a sandwich to be honest. I do not need anything fancy.
[Oh Abyss help her, do not try and find something shiny for her to eat. She's been watching what she puts in her mouth this time around, ok.]
