I've heard a little. Nothing too specific about what Scions do, exactly.

[ So please. Tell him more. ]

It's a little tricky, I suppose. We deal largely with threats the forces of the city-states aren't so well equipped to deal with- primarily primals.

What makes your little group so special that you can handle Primals?

…The ability to fight them without being tempered by them- turned to their will, and against one's comrades.

I know what tempering is. How is it that you're so immune to it?

I see. One of the others told you…? Might I ask who? [He's curious. And that…] Ah. That is due to the power of the Echo- a power which grants protection and understanding.

Thancred, I live with an Ascian and two Warriors. Please tell me how it is I can't know.

[ Honestly... He doesn't understand why so many are surprised by his knowledge when he is also literally invested in tales of Light and Darkness. ]

Now explain how this Echo can provide such protection.

…alright. In that case…. [Even if it wasn't so close to Vanitas' being, Thancred supposes he'd be curious. He frowns a little at the mention of Ascian, but- mm. …that line of thought's no good. The Echo is… with any luck, a better subject.]

Our understanding of it is still something we're seeking to improve, but it is generally held to be a gift from the Mothercrystal, woken in times of impending calamity. It is, I suppose… a measure of boundary in its protection.

[ Or is it? ]

A measure for protection... Or is it a type of tempering itself? You obtain the Echo from the Goddess of Light, which is the polar opposite to Zodiark. She needs you to continue her fight so how can you be sure that you're not somehow being used?

[mmmm oh boy.]

[Thancred frowns brow furrowing.]. I doubt that. The Echo enables its bearer to understand others- to learn, and make a choice based on that. Of those who have joined us, I would consider that they people who wished to help, Echo or no. Each Calamity threatens our homes and lives, after all. [His expression flattens, a little.]. If I have been used- it was not by one of Hydaelyn's servants.

And each Calamity brings the pieces of your broken star back together.

[ Which, he doesn't see a problem with. Though Thancred probably should have guessed that considering Vanitas' own condition. ]

Protecting your world is one thing. Listening and abiding by the whims of a goddess that broke the star in the first place, causing this mess, seems like a pretty backwards thing to do.

… For all its imperfections- it is still a good place. One worth trying to make better, as it is.

[Else- what has all their suffering for? Those they have lost- Louisoix.]

…To what end were they divided, then? [It's mostly rhetorical, and- mm, he does remember now. Two parts divided, and what he'd said- it makes sense. (Speaking of which- people he still needs to meet…)

Doesn't make it half irritating, considering the time they've spent trying to avert Calamity.]

The deeds are still given to the individual. [The Warrior, those of the Path- and then the Lady Iceheart…] I'd argue it seem about as backwards as breaking those lands for the sake of reacting another god.

If I'm honest, I think the lot of you are stupid when it comes to this. Heeding the call of any deity begs the question of if you are really thinking things through or not.

[ Vanitas shrugs. Again, it matters little to him. It's not his world. ]

The Ascians want to restore their world at the cost of lives. You and yours wish to preserve your world at the cost of theirs. If the ones that are following Zodiark are selfish for wanting this, then so are the ones that are following Hydaelyn. Both want the same thing and are not looking for a better solution, if it can be found at all.

…Perhaps there's an irony in that, when it seems many hear an urge to think. But I believe many of the realm's people would rise to her protection, were the gods not to speak at all.

[Most likely they'd have a separate set of problems in that case, but…. It is the actions of people, that have pushed them forward- attempting to avert Calamity, or survive- and then rebuilding.

He frowns.]

Perhaps. But what we wish for seems completely at odds- for the world the Ascians desire entails the destruction of those shards split apart from the Source, where we live in the world as it is today. There have already been seven destroyed- seven Calamities brought on our lands. It is not a situation that speaks well for their desire to negotiate with us- not when they see us as lesser- as tools, rather than equals. [There's no small part of him thinking of Lahabrea, there.]

You don't have to explain how it works. I know what Calamities are and why they are supposedly a necessary step. It's not my world. Star. Whatever. I'm not about to argue the morality of anything. All I can say is that I find both sides pretty resistant.

[Feathers that had been starting to puff still, and then settle back. It's not entirely unlike having a bucket of cold water dumped on a furnace, and it leaves him more than a little deflated.]. It's difficult to see how both states of the world might coexist. But- we are at a remove here, for whatever that might do.

I suppose it's because no one has really tried. Each side is influenced by the god or goddess they so choose to serve.

[ Vanitas shrugs. ]

But who knows. Maybe being "removed" from it for a while might give both sides real perspective.

That's- [Long ears shift, as Thancred frowns.]. For a long time, the Ascians were shrouded in shadows and secrecy. It's hard to say there was the opportunity, on our end. [More to the point- because that aggravates his sense of agency-]. Why should we need the word of some greater entity to protect those we care about?

Some idea for the future, I should think. [His eyes are on his talons again, for a moment- dealing with the tribes is something he'd like to think he can take some ideas back for, but that feels smaller.] Is there aught you've been thinking on while here?

[ Vanitas will allow the topic to die. It isn't really worth it getting into it anyway. Besides there are things to be done and he should focus on the task rather than meaningless conversations.

As for if he has been thinking on anything... ]

I have been from time to time.

[ Not that he feels like clarifying. ]

[It is still something that he cares about- but going further doesn't seem of any help. But then, who…?]

Including crafting?

No. I haven't done anything with crafting.

[ WHy would he? He doesn't know how any of that stuff works. ]

All right. Well, if it ever strikes your interest.

[Well, perhaps for the Flood. But then, it might be easier to ask someone who knows about collars, in the end.]

I made a spear before, but I was supplied a kit and instructions on that.

[ Again, anything else is sort of lost on him. ]
