If eating it won't really do anything but "maintain normalcy" then why go through with it at all? If you're not getting anything from it then why go out of your way?

[ Which is his whole point? Why put effort into something that won't have any beneficial results? ]

The issue is that just don't understand why so many people do things that don't do anything for them. Isn't it pointless.

[It's a quiet answer to a question she's been asked over and over again, by herself and others, in various ways.]

I won't lie; when you bend over backwards to accomplish something for someone else, only to receive nothing but hollow words of thanks, it's frustrating at times. And the "righteousness" of it often doesn't count as a reward in and of itself, either. But it's what I want to be doing, because there's so many who don't, and I'm no one if not a woman who goes against the grain.

[She grins, flashing a quick view of those pointed incisors.]

And it does have the benefit of warming the body, which is not pointless. I do enough cooking around this house anyway, so one more doesn't bother me.

[ Honestly Vanitas still doesn't really get it. Where does that desire stem from? That want?

But maybe he can understand doing it just to throw it in the faces of others. Do to what they won't. ]

I guess you're right about one thing: it does help keep you warm.

[ So fine. She'll get what she wants because even Vanitas needs to eat. ]

[She makes a triumphant little noise, padding jauntily off to the kitchen to prepare. Apparently she enjoys having people to dote on, whether they accept it willingly or not.]

Want hot chocolate while you wait? Just kidding, of course you do.

[If she gives him a choice, it seems like he'll just complain, so she's revoking his choice privileges for right now.]

Stew is okay, right? Seafood, mayhap?

[ So she and Mira are like peas in a pod. No wonder Emet-Selch has been making all those comments about taking in strays. Or pets.

Looks like Vanitas doesn't really have an option but to go along with this. Not that he is going to say no to hot chocolate. He kind of likes sweets? ]


I guess it's fine.

[ Look, he just doesn't know how to respond to kindness. Not genuine like this, where nothing is being asked of him. ]

[There's a short reprieve before Irhya returns with a mug of hot chocolate, a couple marshmallows floating on the top, and sets it down in front of him.]

Even if you say you don't do friends, I do. Food and drink make it easy to connect with people. An old friend of mine used to use this as his cheer-up drink whenever he or anyone else was upset... It might be a reach, but it'd be nice if it could warm you, too.

[And while the water is boiling, she has a few minutes to sit down herself while she waits.]

How'd you run into Mira, anyway? And Emet-Selch, for that matter. I saw you all outside before the weather kicked up again, but I was still kind of sleeping at the time...

[ Vanitas kind of looks at the hot chocolate. Truthfully, he likes sweets. It's something he's only recently discovered about himself but still. Van can't act eager. That'd be embarrassing. ]

Warm me in what way?

[ Because it sounds like she's talking about more than just physically. He shrugs and finally takes the mug in his hands. He'll just drink out of it thanks. ]

The old man was telling stories by those bonfires they had when we first got here. Never heard of Light and Darkness like that so I was interested. Mira caught me burning a doll.

[She gives him a mysterious little smile, but doesn't answer the question. He doesn't need to tell her whether or not it worked, in the end, as long as it did.]

Ah... what do you mean "like that"? The way our world is structured? Is that to say yours is different?

...Heh. What did the doll do to you, anyway?

[ And he won't answer the question about the doll! ]

Too much Darkness has never been a good thing. Hearing that Light can be the same is... Interesting.

[ Because where he's from that just doesn't happen! ]

[She notes the dodging of her question and files it away for later. Tricky, this one.]

Aye, any imbalance will knock things off substantially, even if it's light over darkness. I'm sure the people of the First thought the same thing until the Flood came and wiped clean everything in its wake. Many living there had never even seen the night sky until recently.

Though I suppose you came to the wrong house if a little darkness concerns you; Emet-Selch is a devout of a god of darkness, and Mira and I are dark knights who harness the power of the abyss.

[A smirk forms on her face as she describes them; "companions of darkness" seems to fit them well, even if "companions" is a questionable term depending on who's asked.]

I take it the mechanics of light and darkness work differently in your world, then? Is it more of a dichotomy of good and evil?

[ Well. Vanitas actually has a small laugh about that. ]

You think that I'm "concerned?" I don't possess any Light at all.

[ But of course she's also talking about things that Vanitas hasn't heard before. ]

But you're going to have to explain things like "the Flood" and the "First." What do you mean they haven't seen the night sky?

[ He is curious enough about that. Vanitas isn't dodging the question directed at him this time... But he'll come back to it in a moment. ]

Ah, apologies. The Flood was, obviously, a flood of light unleashed upon that world when the balance of light and dark was tipped dangerously far towards the aspect of light. As a result, there was a perpetual scalding light in the sky, an eternal daylight. Many children of that world, and even most races that do not live upwards of a hundred years, had never seen the darkness that we call nighttime.

As for the First... our world is split into shards, equal reflections of the same world. Thirteen of them, plus a source shard. It's... a long story, but that's just how it is, though most are unaware of it.

[Very long; that would require getting into what Emet-Selch told her of Hydaelyn's power, and the Sundering that happened thus. And that's not to mention that seven of the shards are long gone by now, anyway...]

Aspects can always change or be modified, though. The balance has been set a bit closer to center now for the First. And I suppose the same could be said of you, since too much darkness can also be dangerous in terms of our world. Though there's another shard just like that, incidentally.

I know about your "star" and how it was split into different pieces. So basically this Flood of Light was meant to be what pushed this Shard to be reabsorbed...

[ Oh Vanitas has been talking with Emet-Selch and Mira. They've made him share, so it only seems fair that he's asked questions in return. Again, however, that number thirteen resurfaces and Vanitas still wonders if there is some significance to it. ]

Unfortunately my condition can't be modified. Once upon a time I was split in two. You see, Light and Darkness exist in every heart, or soul as you guys might call it. My other half contains all of the Light that I no longer possesses. Which means the reverse is true for him - I contain all of the Darkness he no longer possesses.

[omnicrafter]

You catch on quick.

[What a curious predicament, though. Splitting someone in two would almost sound like what Hydaelyn purportedly does, except more of a... a deliberate excision than a proper half-and-half split. Right?

...Well, maybe she's looking too far into it.]

But how does that affect you and your other half, I wonder? Other than it manifesting in your personality, I assume.

It's not that difficult of a concept to grasp, all things considering. I also have traveled to many different "stars" with their own backgrounds.

[ So to hear tall takes such as that? Vanitas is sort of used to it. The idea of Kingdom Hearts and the weapon needed to open it is really just as crazy. ]

From what I can tell, it hasn't effected Ventus too much. He needed to connect to another, but I got the worse end of the deal.
