Event Log: May, Moving Day

I. GATHERING The morning of the 15th is heralded by the sing-song voice of The Coven's coimeadai sidhe Nerissa Bell ringing through the hallways, seemingly unimpeded by the heavy doors or any silencing spells that have been placed in rooms. She asks that all those who arrived at the beginning of the month - not the new inductees, the ones from The Looking-Glass House - gather in The Coven's main room; she has some exciting and important news to deliver. Once everyone is gathered, Nessie (very much a morning person, and sorry to the anyone who isn't) grins and lays a hand on her chest. "Thanks to a good bit of your lot, we've managed to get things ready in record time - aye, I should start out with what I'm talking about, aren't I? Well, well - with the Parliament's permission, thank goodness for my Mhairi's sharp wit, we've managed to get a space for all you to live in outside of The Coven. You can still come and attend classes or talk to all of us, 'course, but everyone's been getting a bit itchy with such suddenly crowded quarters, aye?" Aye aye, calls some poor, tired student from the second floor as they pass through, and Nessie pauses with a slow blink before she laughs, shaking her head. "Anyway, gather your things if you have any and follow me. Or us," she corrects herself, as a few other Witches seem to materialize from nowhere. "Can't be out without a couple of friends, I suppose." As soon as everyone's ready, Nessie and her entourage lead them out of the courtyard, aglow with fresh flowers and the soft light of dawn peeking between the clouds. The spot they've managed to get isn't too far from The Coven proper, and it doesn't look much different than the rest of the Aristocratic District that it resides in - the only thing that sets it apart is the sign Nessie takes a moment to conjure up and hang with balls of light between two streetlamps. The Haven. "Named so as a respite for all you refugees," she explains as she turns around; she sets her hands on her hips, gazing out at the crowd, and gives them a small smile. "I can't stay and chat right now - Mhairi's still with Parliament even with the hours, and I've got things to get in order at the Coven still - but if you have need of either of us, we'll be in contact. We've a little mailbox set up in front of the Coven just for you lot, so just drop us a letter or some such with one of our names or both, and we'll be right quick about answering, we will. Within reason," Nessie adds, laughing a little, "'course, within reason. Anyway, find some familiar faces and have a lovely time, will you?" With that, and a few more little goodbyes, Miss Nerissa Bell takes her leave; half of her Witches disappear with her, but the other half remain to help keep an eye on things as the day progresses and to help with directing people to either houses or the barracks set against the Wall. While there will be no NPC threads this time - sorry! - we have opened up an NPC Inbox! You can find it here. While they definitely prefer letters, they do both have watches now like cool moms and can be contacted through that as well, provided they aren't busy at the time.

II. THE HAVEN Formerly part of the Aristocratic District, The Haven is just as well-kept and brightly-lit as the district it hails from. The houses err on the tall and ornamental-side, large enough to fit several families (or, according to the upper class, their one family, several dozen servants, and guests), especially closest to the Aristocratic District. They become a little more modest and smaller as one gets away from the realm of high society and nearer to the Residential District proper. Newcomers are shuffled here and invited to find somewhere to live - the Coven is currently handling expenses for the houses themselves in an program implemented by the Parliament, though if your character wishes to have anything extra - like maids, chefs, and so on - they'll have to pay for them themselves with their own earned money. Much of the landscape and fixtures are the same as in the Aristocratic Districts, though it lacks formal emergency services due to its roots as part of a district that already did. Much of the housing already has furnishing due to the speed at which homeowners were relocated; they were given enough time to collect their valuables, but standard furniture such as kitchenware, couches, beds, etc. were left behind for those moving in. Other houses appear the same, but the dust on the floors suggest these houses were left before the new arrivals even showed up - a reminder that the Cwyld can strike just about anyone, regardless of standing. Some may be familiar with this portion of Aefenglom already, as they took on the task of helping to clean the area up. Surprise, one could say; they were preparing their own future homes, for their stay in the city. However, another portion of this district has been opened up to the new arrivals: the barracks, the row of buildings pressed against the very edge of the Bright Wall. As the city's military force no longer has the same presence it previously did, the barracks have gone into disuse, and a cleanup effort has been in place since before the new arrivals came through the Looking-Glass House. For those who desire something a little less opulent, the barracks might just be the answer. The barracks can also be used for business, for a welcome center, a communal space, for anything that the residents of the Haven see fit to use it for - so long as the legality isn't questionable, on the surface. Not everyone is so happy, however. A very vocal group of younger rich people are set on harassing and bullying those moving into The Haven, and they aren't afraid to use a little magic to do it. Levitation, fake fire, real fire, sudden weather shifts, and threats to do more if they don't find somewhere else to live are all present - these aristocrats don't care for the new people butting into their lives, especially anyone who looks distinctly non-human or already have signs of their Monster traits coming in. There are others, though, who are quite pleased to have new neighbors - many of them weren't so happy with their other ones - and have set up little stalls to peruse and tables to sit at to help foster them in. These have everything from food to flowers, to expensive-looking trinkets and jewelry on them - the people running them are quite amiable, especially closer to the Residential District proper, and don't mind handing these out for free... or mostly free. The only thing they'll ask of any characters wishing to procure something from their gifts is to perform a trick - sort of like a one-man talent show. They aren't picky, and as long as a character does their best, they'll give them a gift. (Or someone with quick fingers could just swipe them off, given how unprotected they are, but that person will find their hands turning red and leaving similarly-colored marks on everything they touch, as if dipped in paint.)

III. AND THEN THEY WERE ROOMMATES To help with filling up the larger houses - and even some of the smaller ones, and the shared rooms in the barracks - the Witches left over from Nessie's group have come together to set up a little roommate finding service that will run for the week. For those who aren't entirely sure who they want to shack up with, they have a small survey for them to fill out and post on the board they've magicked up in the center of The Haven. The board also very helpfully reads aloud each form for everyone to hear in a cheerful, monotone voice. It isn't able to be shut up, nor is it easy to ignore, being imbued with a similar kind of amplification magic that Miss Nessie used earlier in the morning for her own voice. It seems these Witches - or at least one of them - has a prankster nature... and unfortunately, it doesn't stop there. a. A LITTLE MISCHIEF While by and large the board will work as it should - a listing is filled out, put up, and read aloud for all to hear - for characters who aren't interested in doing some writing, or who can't for one reason or another, the board will take it upon itself to make one for them. It isn't going to be the most accurate at all, being either completely fictitious or based on a first impression from the board itself. This can range from "They have blue eyes, so you know they're a kind person!" to "How stand-offish, they must be a crook! A thief! A villain!" and anything in-between, including but not limited to: outrageous feats they may or may not have accomplished, poor hygiene habits, false accounts of incredibly embarrassing moments, and so on. b. A LITTLE HANDS-ON Not entirely content with just allowing people to write their preferences and call it a day, a few of the younger Witches have begun magicking small chocolates, hard candies, and bubble gum, and handing them out to new arrivals as a welcome treat. These aren't any ordinary treats though - they have one of three of effects: • Sticky fingers, meaning characters will stick to anyone or anything they touch. • Truthfulness, meaning characters will say whatever they're really thinking or feeling at the moment. • Desire for company, meaning characters will gravitate immediately to the first person they see, regardless of their feelings on them otherwise. Thankfully, none of these last long - only about ten minutes, and they can't be combined with each other; eating one candy with one effect will simply replace any other effects... Which might be for the better. The subthread for this can be found HERE, while any ones that are made up by the board itself can be simply written into your top levels or replies to other people. A. PERSONAL RAINCLOUD
[ So, harassment, huh? Honestly, even with the magical additions it's not like these guys can throw at Izuku anything he can't handle in that category...he doesn't know them, the attacks aren't personal or targetted, and it's all more a mild annoyance than anything else.

That doesn't make having a miniature rainstorm above his head any easier to deal with, though. Like, yes - he can handle it! But also...consider. He would like to be dry at some point again? And there's a very specific problem with this spell - ]

W-wait! [ He's quick to stop the first person he sees, although he's careful not to touch them (he's soaked through to the bone), shivering instead and trying not to rain on them. ] Sorry, but - do you mind going into the library for me? I need some help finding a counterspell, but I don't want to, er...well. Get any books wet...?

[ :( He's giving you the biggest green puppydog eyes. Help a guy out, please! ]

B. TALENT SHOW
[ The more welcoming locals are a blessing. Izuku isn't too drawn to most of the things they have - well, he does try a few tricks for food and flowers - but he sort of stops to look at a broach that's understated and sort of...pretty, he thinks?

He thinks his mom would like it, but he's running short on tricks, and he looks around, biting his lip.

His eyes light up when he spots someone he recognizes as another "newcomer". ]

Hey! Do you want to try to do a trick together? [ It's not like he can give his mom that broach right now, but...

Maybe he could hold onto it. ]

II. OH GOD, THEY WERE ROOMMATES (CANDY-COATED)

[ OOC: his roommate request thread, please feel free to apply. Since he fills out the form without question or complaint, we'll skip that part of the prompt...but Izuku is unfortunately very willing to accept candy from strangers, so: ]

A. STICKY FINGERS
[ Anyone or anything, huh? Izuku isn't as much of a klutz as he was before he got his quirk, but he's...still not the best at coordination when he gets flustered. So you can find him sort of standing next to a wall with his hand on it, very deliberately trying to pull it away and failing to look at all smooth or natural because, well, no, he's not trying to hide it?

Or you can find him accidentally brushing your hand as he walks by after having accepted some bubblegum, only to sort of yank your hand with him as he goes when they don't part.

He looks flummoxed for exactly two seconds before he looks horrified. ]

Not again!

B. TRUTHTELLER
[ If you want Izuku to be REALLY HONEST with you, by all means come over...he's just finishing up a chocolate, smiling brilliantly at the witch who gave him it. ]

Thank you so much! It's really nice of you to hand these out...

[ Maybe someday he'll learn not to assume the best of everyone. That's...not highly likely, though. ]

C. CLINGY NERD
[ And, well, he likes company! A lot! He's theoretically extroverted in that he enjoys people and their company, for all he's still residually shy. So Izuku thinks nothing of hurrying over when he spots someone, whether or not he recognizes them. ]

Hey, wait up! Do you mind if I come with you? [ Never mind that he has no idea where you're going. That's clearly not important. ]

III. FLOWER LANGUAGE

[ Hey, are you taking that quest-class Gardening With Class? If so, you might find one green-haired nerd murmuring frantically to himself as he takes notes, the bouquet he's supposed to be arranging half-abandoned in front of him as he goes through the meanings. ]

- It's a little odd, isn't it? I mean, not odd...but flower language varies from culture to culture. Even given that, and this being another world entirely, I think there's at least a little bit of overlap...

[ Though he's only going off of a very, very minimal knowledge of any Japanese flower meanings back home. The more popular ones, those he knows...the rest? Not really. ]

[ This makes being clingy and close even easier...honestly, Izuku so often wants to make new friends he just genuinely doesn't think anything of the impulse, like a complete and total dumbass. ]

[ He falls into step happily enough, gravitating to her side like a magnet. ]

[ He hopes. He PRAYS...He doesn't really want to just wait out this storm, since he'd kind of like to go and do other things with his life, someday.

Izuku's more than a little grateful for the coat over his head, though, even though it's too late for him to not get totally soaked. ]

[Books are used as much in his world anymore, with everything being downloadable but fortunately Hank was the type of resilient old man to know a little more about books.

Which is is to say he asked whoever he found in the library that might be running the place.

When he comes back he has a book in his hand, looking at the kid to make sure he was still holding up.]

You good, kid? I got a book that might help. Problem is, I don't think it's a good idea to let you handle it.

[He groans because he already reach this conclusion coming back.]

[Really, he doesn't have to worry about getting this guy wet- Paris is already drenched when Izuku approaches him, and he doesn't have a raincloud or anything like that. Though given that he has gills and there's a ray on legs following him around, maybe it's not hard to guess why.]

[Paris pauses, and shakes his head.] N-no, I don't think I need to...

[Nerd-mumbling is a relatable pastime. Sure, Giorno is usually able to keep it inside of his head, but that doesn't mean he doesn't feel a certain sense of kinship with the green-haired kid who is muttering extremely seriously about flower language.]

[That's very relatable. None of his features have changed yet, but there's an almost palpable sense of ears perking up all the same. Flower language varies from culture to culture. 👀???]

[Casually:] Is it such a stretch that there would be similarities in how people interpret nature from one universe to the next?

Well - no, not exactly, but it's just sort of - what do you think it is, exactly, that makes some flowers "mean" one thing to so many people in so many disparate groups? And what is it about others that makes the more likely to be variations...?

[ Does it matter? Maybe not, but Izuku always thinks and overthinks everything... ]

And in some ways, maybe it is sort of a weird thing to think about, when things are so different here, don't you think? Like...what is it about this one thing that makes it carry over...? Or any other thing which does?

That's a lot of questions.

[It's not reproachful. He certainly doesn't mind. He just can't answer them all at once, give him a minute.]

[With a thoughtful look down at the flowers on the bench in front of him — a rosy pink with tiny petals and rough leaves — he considers before answering the questions in order, counting off on his fingers.]

One: some symbols are nearly universal. Colors mean similar things in many cultures. Yellow is almost always connected to the sun, rebirth, new life, and so on. To be less subtle, skulls generally mean death no matter where you go. It's a similar principle. The human mind works in metaphor, much of the time.

Two: I'm not sure about the variation, but I'd imagine the difference comes from broader cultural differences than specifically the interpretation of flowers. To take the previous example again, a culture which has recently been victim of a plague that turned its sufferers a bright, sunny yellow might no longer interpret yellow as a symbol of rebirth, but one of death. Then interpretation of yellow objects, such as flowers or fruits, might change as well. That's what I think.

And finally, I don't think it's weird to think about, no. No matter where people are, they want to see patterns in the world. In nature, especially. People will always do that everywhere, no matter how dire things get. It's just another way of proving you're alive, by seeing beauty and meaning in the world around you.

[oh, it's izuku..! he hadn't really taken note of who was in this class, honestly, though there's even a few people he knows from school here too.

tori's gonna complain to them at some point, because idols don't usually do this sort of thing and so Maybe they'll have something to bond over, but for now his attention is on izuku, moving his own notebook down to sit closer to the other.

... despite it being for notes, it honestly doesn't look like something someone could read; shorthand is his specialty, of course he's gonna use it. this isn't even his final form.]

Flowers are flowers no matter what, right? Like, the rose is always going to be for love. Um~, by any other name, it smells just as sweet, or something like that.

[ Izuku's handwriting is at least easy to read, his shorthand more being casual coded notes that he wouldn't mind decoding for anyone. ]

Actually...I don't think that's true! That is, in at least one culture a rose is meant for mourning, not for love. [ Granted, "love" is by far the most common meaning, but... ]

What sort of bouquet are you doing anyway? If you overthink it, it'll be like you're not thinking at all.

The flowers overlap, too, [ Lex points out from a few seats away. Her bouquet, so far, is primarily made of plants that are edible. There are a few smaller, non-toxic flowers as accents... but this is definitely a bouquet that screams 'food'. ]

I mean, they're pretty dead in my world, but I've seen pictures. Didn't think I'd see this many here.

Actually...I'm wondering how many flowers don't overlap, at this rate...? I mean...I don't think I know enough about flowers to be truly certain.

[ don’t fight your changes too much, they said, after a confirmation from a scale or two poking out of open wounds. it’s just . . . increasingly difficult to not contest changes that could very well freak anyone out. eren’s grown fidgety and unnaturally snappy (although, keep in mind it’s not that hard to make him snap by default) during the day, perhaps even a day before that until it’s come to an escalated high.

he’s walking, pacing really, around the haven’s quieter yards, wherever provided, digging and digging hard into bleeding skin just as the sun goes down. there’s a feeling he has, an inexplicable anticipation that sinks his chest and makes his skin feel— crawly. his jaw has come to an agonizing throb, and he just wants whatever’s under there out. having never-ending itches for almost a week would bring the strongest to a brink, consistent toothaches moreso. no sleep, no rest, just itches, and throbs, the stings that come with hurting himself and dreams—

it gets unbearable, to the point that eren no longer retorts to his fingers. he pulls at his hair, drags nails down his face and makes a sound. there’re no words, but the tone conveys help pretty easily. he’ll help himself, of course! doing the worst thing possible. he’s stolen something, and mind eren was not one to steal, leaving a trail of red paint behind and— maybe something a little deeper in crimson, trying to pluck at the blotted patches of skin in hopes to alleviate the pressure beneath. ]

Get out already–!

[ It's the sound that gets him first. Izuku is and always has been someone who cannot help but respond to any cry for help - so when he hears something that is so viscerally a request for it he can't help but respond, leaving his bedroom via the window and trying to find the source of the noises that woke him up.

He doesn't expect what he finds, and he rushes forward without thinking ("your eyes looked like they were asking for help") even as a soft sound of distress leaves him as though punched out. ]

E-eren! Stop, you're going to - !

[There's a certain type of person who probably should appreciate a welcoming and friendly reception, but... doesn't. L is a pale and shabby thing in a set of dark Coven robes that appear to swallow his spindly frame, and he's actively cringing away from most friendly overtures.

...but he doesn't have an established place to stay, or a job. He doesn't have a handler or a liaison, meaning that his shell is a giant, oppressive inconvenience that would be better shed sooner if he's going to make it in this place.

That might be why he doesn't ignore or snap at the friendly kid who tries to get his attention. They're in the same boat, aren't they? He's under no obligation to try to help out a stranger; L sighs shallowly and while he sounds beleaguered, and his expression matches, he's actually entertaining this.]

Oh. What kind of "trick?"

[He has one of those voices that enunciates clearly, and tends toward sounding condescending.]

W-well, I was thinking that maybe we could do something together like...a dance routine?

[ It's a childish answer, maybe, but it doesn't seem like he's cowed by the sound of near-condescension. He gets it a lot from a lot of people, okay... ]
