Intro Log: October 2020
I. ARRIVAL
A moment later, you feel a tug, and you find yourself stumbling into a dark, musty room. Behind you, a mirror stands ornately decorated with reminders of home wrought in brass and wood: the faces of people you know, and symbols important to you; all things that send a pang through your chest with the desire to return to them. Touching the mirror's surface does nothing but leave the stain of your fingerprints. When you turn to survey the room, you find there are hundreds of other mirrors. None of them are as decorated as yours - they're plain and dusty, speckled with age. Then you realize a second thing: You're not alone. Distantly, the ringing bell of a clocktower can be heard. But no matter its distance, the time is clear to make out: it chimes three times, stark, resonating like a pulse of something in this mirrored hall that you and many others have found yourselves in. For those familiar with magic, they might feel the power of the witching hour upon them, though it will feel different from what they're used to - in fact, everything does. You're certainly not the only ones here, however. On the first floor, with the doors wide open behind them in the foyer, is a small group headed by two individuals. As people begin to arrive, to come from the higher floor, they're waiting - and they're waiting for you, and your questions. Explore the rest of the mirrored halls you've now found yourselves in, or proceed to the foyer? Leaving the Looking-Glass House makes it obvious that the clock striking three was for 3 AM - the night sky is faintly cloudy, but the stars are dim in the face of two moons, even so close to the new moon as it is. The Looking-Glass House is rather nondescript two-story cottage made of grey brick, sitting at the edge of The Coven's courtyard; stones which glow as you step on them mark the path to and from the two buildings. While fairly small and plain on the outside, the inside has been enchanted to be the size of a large library, with hundreds upon hundreds of mirrors hanging, standing, and resting inside its walls. Some are broken, some are cracked, and some seem completely uninjured - but all of them are just as plain as the cottage itself, showing age in the silver beneath their glass and in the greening of their metals... Well, all except a character's personal mirror; to characters, one mirror - the one they came through - will be decorated lavishly with metal-and-wood-wrought reminders of home, and the surface will be as clear as a brand-new mirror. |
II. THE WELCOME PARTY
"My goodness. In the middle of the month! We weren't expecting you, we weren't!" The woman smiles broadly, with her Bonded glancing over the newly arrived and those who may have followed them in to volunteer explanations and assistance to the newest addition of their Mirrorbound bunch. "Let's get through the introductions, shall we? This here's Mhairi Ainsley, ambassador to the Parliament, and of course, my Bonded. And I'm Nerissa Bell, Head Witch of the Coven -- but you can just call me Miss Nessie, you can," she adds with a wink. "I know you must all be tired and confused after all that. We're here to help get you settled, dearest. Let me just..." With nothing more than a wave of her hand, rows of seats are summoned; despite their wooden nature, they're all sturdy and comfortable, filling the foyer and spreading out a ways into the lawn behind them, making room for all of the new arrivals as well as the previous batch. After all, they'll find this just as interesting. The Witches and Monsters that accompanied Nessie and Mhairi move to make room, and some disperse into the building itself to see if there's anyone who needs tending to. Mhairi steps forward as the chairs materialize. "Please, those who are able, join us for a moment. There are many questions that I'm sure you have. We will do our utmost best to answer them, and you may take any that we can't as a promise to find some sort of solution or answer." NOTE: If you wish to handwave interaction with Nessie and Mhairi, please comment here. All responses will be summarized answers rather than an IC thread. For those that'd like a more player-based interaction, Aefenglom has its own Welcome Wagon! These are players who've volunteered for the role, and those that didn't sign up may assist as well if they'd feel their character would -- have fun, and make friends. Additionally, those with notable injuries or sickness will be attended to ASAP by Coven-based witches, and should anyone be curious about what they are -- namely, if they have magic potential or not -- then this can be done during this and the general hour or so the new arrivals are within the Coven's grounds. There are ongoing classes on magic, monsters, and Bonding as well, though they take place more during the day than at night. Feel free to have your characters attend them at any time! |
III. THE HAVEN
As you're leaving -- with Coven and/or Mirrobound escorts as guides -- you'll be given a peculiar-looking device. It's a very special watch, the native Witches explain, compliments of Parliament. These watches are passed around to all the new arrivals, who are given a quick rundown on their functions and encouraged to test them out when they can. They can even do it as they make their way out of the Coven's courtyard and to the Haven. Formerly part of the Aristocratic District, The Haven is just as well-kept and brightly-lit as the district it hails from. The houses err on the tall and ornamental side, large enough to fit several families (or, according to the upper class, their one family, several dozen servants, and guests), especially closest to the Aristocratic District. They become a little more modest and smaller as one gets away from the realm of high society and nearer to the Residential District proper. Newcomers are shuffled here and invited to find somewhere to live, free of cost. The Coven is currently handling expenses for the houses themselves in a program implemented by the Parliament, though if your character wishes to have anything extra -- like maids, chefs, and so on -- they'll have to pay for them with their own earned money. Much of the landscape and fixtures are the same as in the Aristocratic Districts, though it lacks formal emergency services. Much of the housing already has furnishing as well: standard items such as kitchenware, couches, beds, etc. were left behind by the relocated owners for those moving in. Though some are fairly newly-unoccupied, the dust on the floors of other houses suggests they were left long before the new arrivals even showed up -- a reminder that the Cwyld can strike just about anyone, regardless of standing. Another portion of this district has been opened up to the new arrivals: the barracks, the row of buildings pressed against the very edge of the Bright Wall. As the city's military force no longer has the same presence it previously did, the barracks have gone into disuse, and a cleanup effort has been in place since before the new arrivals came through the Looking-Glass House. For those who desire something a little less opulent, the barracks might just be the answer. The barracks can also be used for business, for a welcome center, a communal space, for anything that the residents of the Haven see fit to use them for -- so long as the legality isn't questionable, at least on the surface. To help with filling up the larger houses -- and even some of the smaller ones, or the shared rooms in the barracks -- the Coven put together a little roommate finding service, on a smaller scale from the grand opening of the Haven a while back. For those who aren't entirely sure who they want to shack up with, they have a small survey for them to fill out and post on the board they've magicked up in the center of The Haven. The board also very helpfully reads aloud each form for everyone to hear in a cheerful, monotone voice. It isn't able to be shut up, nor is it easy to ignore, being imbued with a kind of amplification magic. It simply reads the information you've offered up yourself -- or that someone might have written up for you, should that be their idea of fun. |
Welcome to the intro log! While mingling on the log itself is highly encouraged, feel free to make your own logs if you prefer! The network system is free to use once characters have their watches as well; information on that can be found at the bottom of the Setting page, while any extra questions about it can be found in the FAQ index. Quests can be picked up throughout the month as well! While new characters will have to get settled in, you can go ahead and put your name on some by replying to the October's Quest Pickup thread on the Quest Board. Finally, if your character is getting into any Shenanigans or if you have any other questions, just let the mods know here!
Light Yagami | Death Note | Witch
This isn't home. The wall of mirrors around him represents the outcome he feared when going through the original nightmares: he woke up in the wrong place. He's needed back at home, not in this world. For a moment, he stands in front of his mirror, seeing the familiar shapes and faces while anger washes over him. Since he's in public, nothing shows aside from the length of time he spends looking at the mirror before he sighs. Light can handle this. When speaking to those he met while in the dreams, he found out this was a possibility. It's a setback, but he'll handle it.
Turning, he's surprised to see someone else in the room too, someone just arriving.
"You surprised me. I thought I was alone."
b. Welcome Party
It's a lot to take in and if the circumstances were different, maybe Light would have been more skeptical, but the proof of magic is around him, he'd spent time in a nightmare with L, and Ryuk is already proof of the supernatural.
He sits quietly through the presentation, taking in all of the details. Light's always been detailed oriented and now isn't an exception. Once the talk is over, he stands and looks over the others nearby. Normally, despite his skills in a social situation, he's not overly social for no reason. Today is no reason. He's in a new world largely alone.
"It's a lot to take in, isn't it? But the path of magic sounds like an interesting one to explore."
It's no difficulty for him to speak to a stranger.
c. Network Post; video; u/n l.yagami
[ It took Light far too much time for Light to decide on a username but ultimately, he decided on something that could be connected to him for now. As someone starting from the ground up, as all of the new arrivals will presumably be doing, it's important to get established.
The video starts simply, with Light in front of his device. ]
I'd like to introduce myself and meet the other people here, new and old. I'm Light Yagami, an unbonded witch. I am curious about the types of magic everyone chose. What did you find the most useful? Why did you choose that specific path?
For monsters, did you find it hard to adjust to all of the changes you went through? I imagine it would be, but I also realize there might be something that happened psychologically that made it easier. I've heard it's possible to change so I can't help but wonder.

Okay in this case, he is lurking and spying. Many reactions so far have been ones of surprise or confusion, and Light's.. well, his is not. The sigh, his bearing suggests to the Ascian that there's more resignation than shock in finding himself here.
If it weren't for the dealings with all the shinigami, finding someone masked and robed lurking in the dark might in fact be really alarming but compared to the likes of Ryuk, Lahabrea is mundane.
"I do apologize," the stranger says, thoroughly insincerely, his voice a dry rasp. "These mirrors hide the presence of others remarkably well." Well, that much is true at least! In fact he'd just stepped around his and here was Light. ".... Forgive my curiosity, but you do not seem shocked to find yourself somewhere likely far from home."
no subject
"I had a dream about this world where I learned a little more. It's my first time being physically present, but it's not my introduction."
During said dream, L told him he could find himself at home, the dream forgotten. Instead, it seems like the vision became reality. Now, Light is stuck in an entirely alien world full of magic when his world, Death Note and Shinigami aside, seems devoid of it.
"You don't seem surprised either. Are you new, too?"
no subject
And ultimately failed. Finding things to make him miserable with was far easier however!!
But that did make two. And if there were two of them touched by nightmares winding up here, there would be others. "Would that I could have remained where I belong... But if rumor tells true, there's naught to be done about it yet. Where comes your learning a little of this place?" Although it sounds like he means 'location', he actually means 'person'. Or thing even, since a stag helped him out.

So, you showed up here, after all.
[No space in L's crisp and formal text style for smugness to shine through. Perhaps Light imagines it, anyway.]
Have you been to the Coven yet? It's the best place to begin magical exploration, especially with the availability of experienced Witches close at hand.
[L is one such Witch, himself. There's an implicit offer here.]
no subject
[ It's one of the reasons he made the post in the first place. He didn't know how to reach L so he made himself reachable. ]
I've been by, but I haven't explored it in depth. I've been trying to familiarize myself with the city. Is that where you are?
no subject
[Or in the library checking out an armload of books to peruse in the wee hours, or putting his hours in at the orphanage for a change of pace to meditative patience, from the demanding pace of his knowledge absorption. A creature of habit, L has settled into his own routine, even in a world where actual magic and monsters exist.]
If you were to drop by within the next few hours, you'd find me by asking Sophie at the front desk for a key to private study room #6. She's been told she might expect such a request.

I started off with abjuration, since my friends and I manage to find ourselves in trouble pretty often. I've been working on conjuration, too. So far, abjuration's definitely more useful when it comes to combat, but when you need a cat-friend, conjuration's your way to go.
no subject
Aren't black cats going to be attracted to us even without the use of magic now?
[ Look, Light doesn't do a lot of jokes. Go easy on him. ]
no subject
Haha, well, I've met my share of black cats... [ Which is a joke Light certainly won't get! ] A few here, too. But it's pretty hard to find a stray when you really want to pet a cat. Cats are pretty particular about their time, after all.

[On the screen is a woman with... not quite feline ears and tail, but definitely enough to evoke the impression of one. The look on her face is... neutral, given what she's about to talk about.]
I'm a vampire. Bonded, maybe looking for more if the stars align, I suppose.
My transformation? I had to literally die. That was fun. And having to feed on blood is inconvenient as all hell -- too much and you get addicted; too little and you risk going feral. Never mind that nobody wants to risk their necks for a kindness.
As for psychological, I... I really couldn't say. Have I changed? I don't know. That'd be a question for the people around me, I suppose. It does happen, however, that much is certain.
no subject
None of that sounds fun at all. It all actually sounds horrible. There are stories about vampires in my world. They're killed by the sun and sticks through the heart but little else. They drink blood and turn into bats.
I know it's not a choice, but it feels like becoming a monster does come with abilities but it also comes with a lot more drawbacks than becoming a witch.

d) after a beginners evocation class
He didn't think invisibility was a tool L had on his belt. If so it's more likely that the puppet's strings were just longer than he thought. He shadows Light, waiting to see L pop up to either play with his doll, dispel it, or whatever, but it doesn't happen. By the time Light has strayed from the busier streets Niles is fed up with pondering motives and decides to just ask. It was a good low stakes opportunity to test his new blade if things went south anyway. He speaks up from the shadows, tail swaying lazily from side to side as he comes closer.]
So can L see me through you, or does he use you like a recorder for lessons he doesn't feel like going to?
no subject
Even after spinning the question over in his head, the confusion remains. How does this man know their connection? Why would he assume Light's a stand-in for L? ]
I'll be upset if I learn anyone can see through me.
[ Bonded as that may be, that isn't supposed to be possible.
Ah, this person also knows Light came from class. He's been followed. That adds a layer of danger to the question. ]
Those are odd questions to ask a stranger.

"Guess so," the Monster said, her voice neutral.
...that voice, though. She'd heard it recently. With a frown and a flick of her ears, Kaede turned to look. The face didn't match with a name immediately, but she did know that face.
"...you again."
Her eyes were much sharper than they had been, in that nightmare; unclouded and focused as cut crystal. Her movements were far more fluid, her tail and ears twitching after the occasional sound or passing thought.
And there was no collar around the Chimera's throat, not even a wound or scar indicating its nightmarish presence.
no subject
It's better than 'you'.
"I'm glad to see you made it out okay. I wasn't sure since we woke up right after, and I'm still learning the rules of this world. I'm glad that the collar's off."
It's a sincere sentiment. Light isn't going to enter into saintdom, but he also doesn't enjoy watching the innocent suffer for no reason. It's the entire reason he was working to go into law enforcement,

for hearthebell; after light's settled in
It's easy to settle in with L, unsurprisingly. When they're both at the cottage at the same time, they move in tandem. Their time handcuffed together surely helped wrinkle out most things that would be a problem for most people moving in with one another. Already, more than once, dinner was spent talking over magical concepts Light learned in class, using what he knows to build on the basic ideas, especially when it's about a topic L's familiar with and can help him stack the blocks.
Through the bond, L can feel that Light actually does enjoy the conversations, that it's not simply a box he must check in order to see sociably acceptable. It's a topic that interests him, a topic that gives him so much to learn, and a mind that can approach it the same way he would. The annoyance at being here doesn't easy, but it does slowly start to take a backseat. A part of Light still misses things — it's easy to assume his family, and that's true in some regards, but he also misses having such a higher mission.
They do each have a life outside of the cottage. Light's already taken up odd jobs and began his own small collection of money. L volunteers at the orphanage. Signs of Light have already made themselves known around the small space. Be it a single book he'd been reading left on the table while he was gone or the patches that now cover the worst part of L's clothing, the two lives are now interlocked.
Still, more often than not, their paths cross both early and late. Despite having always studied in his room when living at home, Light's taken to reading in the main area of the cottage. If L should get home second, he's normally found there, greeting him as the door opens.
Then, there are times they're together outside of the cottage, such as their current lesson at the coven. The room is private, giving them time to themselves. While he's already taking two classes and practicing enough for two men, Light also holds an interest in learning to uncover secrets, to find what's hidden, and the topic is something L excels in, surprising no one.
The door closes behind them, securing their privacy.
"The first question is how well magic can hide things, and if there's some kind of hint that something has been magically hidden."
No reason not to get straight into the lesson.
no subject
It's the case, now. Myr isn't fighting his new Bond, for which L is grateful, but the faun seems intent on giving them space to settle into it. Somehow, it feels different from L accepting that Myr will spend time regularly with his other Bonded to deepen their equally valuable connections; it seems more like abject avoidance, because acceptance doesn't denote happiness, automatically, and Myr is unhappy. It pulls and gnaws at L, but meanwhile...
...he is glad, and secure, and revels in his Bond with Light. There's comfort in the noise and the silence alike, new life in things that L believed were long dead. He wants to meet the challenges, and even the audacity and disgust are tinted with affection for something long-missed. L might have found Light insufferable at times during the Kira investigation, but absence made his heart grow far fonder, and now that Light is starting to leave little signs of his presence around the house, it feels as natural and welcome as Myr's personal touches. Every book left means that Light will come to collect it later, an understated little promise that he'll be back, and L carefully practices his own eager optimism with the Bond in the back of his mind confirming that yes, he'll stay, yes, you're safe, at least for now, and what you want is mutual and balanced.
At the Coven, today, L sets several heavy tomes on the table, nudging aside a chair but remaining standing, for the moment. As it happens, divining and illusion are sister studies, pairing well, good for enhancing and unraveling each other.
"It depends wholly on the skill of the user," he replies. "With those who are quite experienced and practiced, or Fae illusion, you might never guess that something was hidden without advanced divination, but... if someone was in a rush, or sloppy, or a novice at illusion, you'd see some tells. I think of it like a garment, or a structure... the places that bear the most stress, like a seam or a load-bearing beam or column, will be the first places the magic shows through."
He glances over his shoulder. "I always look at corners first. If the witch was especially sloppy, you might even see runes they forgot to hide, and that's a dead tell. In this case... whoever used this room last changed the color of the walls with illusion magic. Three walls pass muster; one doesn't, which is how I knew it was the case from the moment we entered."

D, hello!!
It is a matter of time that Myr has carefully counted off, giving the newcomer at least a week to settle in and the Bond as much time for the initial tenderness of feeling to wear off. He will not lie to himself and pretend a part of it isn't his own hurt and jealous inability to witness L lavishing a Bond's affection on his own murderer; he expects better of himself given his upbringing, but knows when he can't deliver it. (Perhaps, even, shouldn't deliver it.)
But once the week is up and he can pretend he is settled enough in his own feelings to deal with the intruder, it is time and past he return to the cottage and so he does. It is still his home, too, so while he does knock and announce himself at the door--to not surprise anyone inside--he doesn't wait to be let in. The bundles of food and fresh linen he's carrying are better put away soonest, anyway, so he shoulders inside to do just that. A creature something like a five-foot-long caterpillar slithers through in his wake, antennae waving as it rears up to take in the room before giving him a nudge away from a wall.
"Anyone home?" he calls, clattering across the cottage's wooden floor for the kitchen with the wormipede's guidance. With any luck, no one is, but Myr's so rarely lucky that way.
:> Hello. It's happening
It's not hard to guess this is probably Myr. For one, if it's a thief, they're awfully polite to call out after coming inside. The more logical answer is someone who feels at home — and indeed, this is his home as well, but Light wasn't given that information until he'd agreed to move in — in the small cottage. If there were doubts, the new set of supplies would have given Myr's identity away.
No one had warned Light of the caterpillar.
"Sorry, Linden isn't here right now."
Of course Myr's luck can't hold out. Instead of L's usual voice, he gets something more pleasant from a stranger who isn't completely a stranger, not after L's revelations. At the very least, he's not met with any hostility. Instead, he moves forward to try and take some of the bags from his arms.
"I'll help put this away. I assume you're Myr?"
If not, this interaction will change very quickly.
