Summer's First Snowfall
Juril comes in as hot as Iuneril did - muggy, humid, tense. The city buzzes softly with rumors of accidents and incidents, the faint pink skies lasting far too long and starting far too early only bolstering these. I burnt my buns last month, it goes. I never burn my buns.
The flowers haven't been growing as well as usual, it goes. It must be because we had red skies during Litha.
Such superstitions might be laughable - but in a world of magic, maybe they hold a little more truth than one might want to acknowledge. Still, for as many rumors as there are, there are just as many people who refuse to let the omen get them down. They might be a little more cautious, but they're hardly stopping what they're doing: sailors in the harbors carry good luck charms as they work, households hang sprigs of chamomile above their doors, Witches pound out extras of finding, luck, and safety magics in enchantment and potion form... Aefenglom is a superstitious city, but it's also a hardy one.
It's the superstitious nature that leads some intrepid young Witches to think everyone needs a little distraction from thinking about the color of the sky, however, and as the sun crests over the bay, white flakes begin to fall. The air grows colder, and throughout the day, the snowfall grows heavier and heavier until it blankets the city - or a few key parts of it. The snow shows no sign of stopping either; while it lightens up periodically, it still flurries on.
That might not be entirely intended - and the snowstorm that hits near the end of the month definitely isn't. Enjoy a peaceful snocation while you can, Aefenglom.
As noted on the calendar, this phenomenon will last all of the month! Feel free to set your threads and logs at any point during the month of July; all activities listed in the prompts below will also be going on throughout it. |
I. THE COVEN
For the first week of snow, the Cove calls off classes. It's not exactly a secret that the Head of the Coven proper has a fondness for the cold, so it doesn't come as a surprise to the students she'd put a temporary hold on instruction-based learning so she they could all enjoy it properly. There are just as many Witches deciding to study on their own as there are enjoying the respite from their professors, however - every opportunity to practice is a good opportunity.
For the rest of the month, it's back to business - but students still find time to have a little fun with the cold weather both during and after their classes, and their professors don't discourage it too much.
a. Winter's Touch It should come as no surprise at all that when Witches get involved with snowball fights, they use their talents to their advantage to send multiple chilly missiles at one another. They float, they fly, and some of them even latch onto the closest heat signature they can find - whether or not that was the intended target. Keep your wits about you, return fire, or cajole others into joining in! There's no such thing as "allies" when it comes to the Coven's brand of snowfights.
b. Enchant Snowcreature Snowmen aren't the only things that get created during the winter; animals of all shapes and sizes do too, and it's not uncommon to see the snow version of animals both of the regular variety (birds, deer, squirrels, cats, foxes, and so on) and rare (the fairytale depiction of dragons, unicorns, sphinxes, and pixies, to name just a few) roaming around along with a Frosty or two. There's even a sled ride hosted by a pair of snow pegasi for those interested in getting off the ground.
c. Ice Spires Instead of building forts and castles like regular people, Witches at the Coven use a mixture of transfiguration and conjuration magics to simply draw them from the surrounding snow and ice themselves, Elsa-style. Their creations range from the beautiful and intricate, to the hardy and hard-to-navigate - for safety reasons, naturally - and some even draw up elaborate staircases to the skies to expand on their creations. Make your own or simply explore the creations with a friend - but be careful, as at least one Witch has the had the inspiration to magic up some sprigs of mistletoe to hang in their snow fort.
d. Winter's Respite Not everyone is happy with the snow, however; in particular, those tending the gardens of the Coven are quite frustrated - plants, even magical ones, are quite delicate and sensitive to the cold!! As a result, there are warmer spots even around the Coven's courtyard; the snow is melted, and the Witches there are doing their best to save the chilled plants. This is also where one can take a break from all the cold and get some hot coffee that'll keep you warm for hours after finishing it and clothes enchanted to adjust their temperature depending on the temperature - for those who don't want to ruin their sporty short-sleeves style for heavy winter clothes. These enchantments only last a few hours, however.
For the interested: yes, the Witches are more than willing to teach those who'd like to learn how to do this - though their version of teaching seems to be more "watch and learn" than actual instruction. |
II. THE RESIDENTIAL DISTRICTS
Encompassing the Residential District proper on both sides of the River Temese, the Aristocratic District, and the Haven, the housing districts are similarly covered in snow - the Aristocratic District has gotten the worst of it in particular, being in the perfect place to center the massive weather spell the Witches responsible have set off. While the streets are quickly being cleared to make foot and hoof traffic a little easier, there's still a lot of snow and ice to take part in, and just as many people willing to have a good time in it. Children in particular are having the time of their lives in all the districts, and the sudden cold weather seems to draw people together -
perhaps a little too literally, with long scarves grabbing the nearest person to make a pair, mittens that won't let you stop holding hands until you've gotten somewhere warm, and wooly hats that suggest in quiet whispers to you that you should definitely go give that person you just locked eyes with a hug, they look so lonely... Whether they actually do or not.
Someone might've had a little fun with their sewing.
a. EASTERN RESIDENTIAL In addition to the usual snow fun (with a significantly less magical spin on it than the Coven - magic is still present, but not to the same wild extent), there are hearty soups, hot chocolate, and fires to warm oneself around. Take a seat and relax a little; almost everything is free, though those wishing to purchase some (secretly enchanted) clothes to stay warm in a more permanent fashion than what's offered at the Coven.
b. WESTERN RESIDENTIAL Compared to the other housing districts, the snow in on the western side of the Residential District is much less - and that's due to the presence of heated stones. Alone or grouped together, those more cold-blooded in nature gather to rest and keep themselves awake while the chilly weather marches on. Nagas, Chimeras, and even the exceptionally rare Dragon or Fae can be seen here, with Vampires lurking around in similar spots with umbrellas and tarps up to shade them further from the darkened snowy sky. Spicy foods are popularly handed out around these areas, while in general everyone seems in favor of cuddling up a little.
c. ARISTOCRATIC DISTRICT While there are still rumors of pickpockets and petty thievery about (and the suspicious looks that come with such words from locals in the area), it hasn't dampened the spirit of those who really, really enjoy snow one bit. There's less activity than in either Residential District (and a lot more complaining about the weather), but what activity there is makes up for it: igloo-making, ice skating on makeshift rinks in the middle of intersections, sledding on the massive piles of snow, and taking a jingle bell-filled ride in a horse-drawn sleigh through the stunning Aristocratic District. The latter is especially good for those traveling to and from The Haven and don't want to get their feet too cold (or who can't handle the cold temperatures at all).
d. THE HAVEN While most of The Haven has been relatively untouched, minus anything anyone living within it might have done - that's you, mirrorbounds - the barracks have been extra dressed up with lanterns and blankets to help keep out the cold a little better, and keep the warmth in. Some kinder Witches have also conjured up a few extra water fixtures, but not for skating on: hot springs populate the larger areas that aren't already taken up by houses, and for those not willing or unable to get in the water, there are sauna options as well in the same areas. Don't get too steamy, though - people getting a little too heated in these areas will automatically have cool water poured on them by some magical means in an effort to get them cooled off. It's a spell designed to keep people from overheating, but it isn't very picky with what it considers "too hot".
|
III. THE HARBOR DISTRICT
Like the southern half of the city, the Harbor District is relatively untouched - relatively. It's an area much more based around industry and work than anything else, and interrupting it isn't looked on very favorable. With that said, though, the harbor is fairly large, and Witches finding a place to practice their own ice magic (inspired, evidently, by the going-ons at the Coven) have managed to bring of the winter cheer to the otherwise dreary district.
The orphans, a mix of humans and Monsters, are more than delighted by this turn of events, and they're a common sight playing in the snow summoned around their orphanages when they're not working in the many factories of the Harbor District. What's notable about them is that they don't use any magic at all when dealing with the snow - they've never had any learning in actually utilizing it for themselves, only in feeding it through the magitech used in their workplaces. Any and all shows of the stuff for purely fun reasons, therefore, bring forth grins and awe, regardless of the kind shown. Provided it isn't used to hurt anyone, of course.
a. ICE FISHING The areas of the bay that are iced over - either gotten by permission or by careful people watching to see how much use the area actually gets - are home to a surprisingly popular activity: ice fishing. Fishing rods, spears, ice chisels, and boots made for stepping on the ice are easy to obtain from those who've set up shop in the area, and many people have already taken to the frozen ground to try their luck at catching something further out than the piers. There are places to cook and eat what's freshly caught as well, but mind your step; the places where holes were are less thick, even as Witches routinely make certain to refreeze them every hour or so to encourage fresh activity in the area.
b. ICE SKATING The other not-as-surprising popular activity for such large swaths of frozen water is, of course, ice skating - and of course, unlike other areas which assume you already have the gear to do so, people have specifically (and quite quickly) set up stalls to sell their skates and sleds for prime ice fun. A little early for their winter line-up, but they're making do. Decorated with small bouncing lights hung on strings, not to mention the tents set up with blankets and pillows, the Harbor District's ice skating area is meant for those who'd like to take to the ice during both the day and night - and the latter is particularly enchanting in its beauty, the soft lighting allowing the frost to glitter in multi-color glory.

Question / Summary thread?
francel de haillenarte; final fantasy xiv; ice dragon
[somewhere in a secluded corner of eastern residential, you might find francel having the time of his life.
clad as he is in a plain white shift, open-backed and ending just above his knee, francel seems woefully underdressed for the weather, especially since the ice-like scales over his arms and shoulders might easily be mistaken for piles of snow clinging to his body. instinct has gotten the better of him, though only by a little bit: he’s perfectly in control of his faculties, but who hasn’t, at some point, looked at a pristine, untouched snowdrift and instinctively wanted to jump into it?
therefore — you might see francel in some less-traveled corner of the city, hopping and skipping about in an especially tall pile of snow (groin-deep for most people; something closer to thigh-deep for his leggy elezen proportions). he kicks at it; he shuffles in it; he tosses himself into it and rolls around, shaking precipitate from his wings.
he looks like he’s having fun, like some kind of enormous bird at play, and if he spots you, he’ll smile a little roguishly, as if to say he knows exactly how ridiculous he looks.]
Care to join in? I can’t keep you warm, though!
@civicbooty
when aymeric returns to their shared home in the evening, he might detect a warmth in their chilly halls, a subtle heat radiating from the direction of the kitchen. francel is there, stirring and taste-testing a pot of popoto stew. it, like most of the things francel cooks and serves to their table, has been thoughtfully chosen despite his persisting belief that aymeric is not especially moved by any of it. in dragonhead, knights coming off patrol oft enjoyed a simple bowl of popoto stew in the evening, garnished plainly with mountain salt and perhaps a sprinkling of crushed black peppercorns if they could get it; in aefenglom, francel has secured a new supply of income, a rewarding supply of income, and so he has been able to make a much richer version of the soldiers’ simple stew, with a splash of wine, fine sea salt, and exotic dried herbs as near to the sort from ul’dahn markets as he could get. he’s nowhere near as talented as some of the chefs that labored in the vault’s kitchens for the benefit of the high priests, but still — the stew smells heavenly, and it looks divine.
at aymeric’s approach, francel turns the fire a little lower — some kind of new magical implement has been affixed to the stovetop, one that lets him control the flames at will — and smiles.]
Aymeric! Welcome back!
[he’s full of energy — so much so that he’s too excited to walk, it seems. he takes one step forward, kicking off the floor, then bounds over to aymeric with a measured flap of his feathered wings, gliding an ilm or two above ground.]
The weather’s just like it was in Ishgard, so I know you must be accustomed to it, but still, I thought you might enjoy a bit of warm stew after a cold day out. Would you like to eat now, or later?

eren jaeger 💥 attack on titan (fire dragon)
A; AS A WISE MAN ONCE SAID
[ anywhere from the coven to the haven, eren can be found wandering around with a frown that makes him look a mighty twenty years older, probably. he side steps sheets of snow, he hisses when he steps in puddles, and all around— the part-dragon just seems incredibly sluggish as he dawns one too many enchanted clothes and accessories to keep him heated— the only way to fool his lizard brain out of pseudo-brumation. if you’re the only one nearby, he might . . . actually be honoring over to your heat source. let him live, he’s cold.
perhaps the scrunch in his features is just way too tempting to pass up throwing a snowball at. maybe you’re daring. eren actively avoids snowball fights, but that doesn’t mean you can’t drag him into one. there might be one now, in fact where a group of witches launch their attack right behind a passerby (it’s you). It hits eren and catastrophe happens, trying to swerve around to catch the source with a dangerous mood That turns his muddy scales a festering red— he’s looking right at you? he’s looking right at you. the witches responsible have already taken advantage of their scapegoat and made a break for it centuries ago, if you happen to look behind you. plain yourself!!!
If you’re lucky, you might see an elusive jaeger try and clear up the entrances to one of of his many scattered dens around cottage yards, perhaps with a few blades and broken glass in tow, and a shovel that he thinks he could use to keep from touching any of the bullshit snow. take that, you fucking snow. ]
B; CHUCKLES I’M IN DANGER (SIKE)
[ even if you can’t find him in his holes, you’ll most definitely find him in the western residential district, where a lizard type thrives in the company of a wild, one true dream: heat rocks. you might see him briskly making his way over, you might already see him there, but one thing is certain: it is everything a lizard brain could ever ask for. a sun, a rock, and heat, heat, heat. the spice in the food is a favorite (although he won’t find himself too hungry), and he might go for a few heavier drinks without even batting a lash (good luck getting him even 5% tipsy this man is a tank), and—
you might see him trying to lift a heated stone slab and carry it all. the way. out of the district. be prepared if you want to stop him somehow. he has answers. ]
WILCARD
i’m down for quests and shit like no tomorrow.plotting post link, hmu @ owlie#3609 or
@mikleo (ft. elliot soon)
what could rouse the morning is the sound of eren moving the floorboards our from under the bed in a lethargic drag, an awkward bump of his horns when they don’t quite fit between until he makes the squeeze to, then sliding through the eren-sized crack into the cavern he’s created for a solid month underneath the cottage. a lot of digging. a lot of instinctual architecture and a rather long way down, but. it was safe. it was warm. he could just sleep there until winter has passed.

ritsu sakuma ★ puca ★ ota
「i. snowfight」
[ On the eastern side of the Residential District, Ritsu's having a pretty good time watching people toss snowballs at each other. The one boon of his new lower half is that he's faster, and bouncing out of the way of anything thrown at him isn't that hard at all; he was surprisingly quick before, but now he's quicker. He's also constructing a proper snow house - nice and round and hollow, not quite an igloo - and some solid singular walls around. Just dotting the area, like little places to hide.
While he's quick to duck and hide, or for the more persistent chasers tire them out by having them chase him around a bit, the second anyone turns their back to him, he's hitting one of those same solid snow walls with his powerful legs. Enjoy the unfair amount of snow getting
thrownkicked at you without remorse. ]「ii. just hear those sleigh bells jingling」
[ It's nice to not have to do anything himself, so seeing there's a sleigh running from The Haven and around the Aristocratic District? Is just his style. Ritsu's a near-permanent fixture on one of them, flicking cunes at the driver whenever the driver gets a little irritated with his presence, and pressing himself closer to his side of the sleigh whenever another passenger gets on. ]
Not bad, right...? It's not even that bumpy either. [ Clearly the most important thing here.
Though that's not so surprising, considering he looks like he's about five minutes from dozing at any given point. The fur helps with keeping warm, but he's still having a weird time with his sleep schedule. ]
「iii. market research」
[ The market in the Harbor is just as undeterred by the weather as anyone else in the district is, and Ritsu's managed to snag a fairly nice stall. His spread might be a little weird - there are cute and stunning accessories, but there are also some downright unsettling sweets just alongside them. Ritsu's leaning back in a chair, eyes warily tracking people passing by despite the easy-going smile he wears and the lazy wave he gives anyone stopping by. ]
Yo~. Anything catch your eye? I made it alll myself... ♪ Fufun, go on, don't be shy... Wanna try something on? I got samples for the sweets too, if you wanna try some of them...
「iv. the prism's glitter」
[ Once he's done with his market business for the day, Ritsu's sitting at the edge of the Harbor - right by where the ice starts, tapping his bare furry foot in the snow. He sort of wants to go on the ice, but he's a little nervous given he's not exactly human where it counts for skating.
...Eventually though, somehow, he gets on the ice - it's not unlikely some too-excited person just pushed him on - and his ears are up, his arms shaky as he's on all fours on the ice. He has gloves on at least, so his fingers aren't freezing, but he's definitely unsteady and not sure if he should try to stand or if he should just resign himself to being stuck on the ice for the rest of his life.
After a long moment
he just flops down on it. Resigning is easier. This is where he lives now. ]

[Kyo is likely to be found with a hot chocolate to warm his hands if and when he does brave heading out. He might be eyeing the enchanted clothes a bit. As if he isn't quite sure how that was even possible but if it was like having a portable kotatsu with his clothes the idea had some appeal.....

Caster (Cú Chulainn) | Witch | OTA
a. Winter's Touch
[ With the first week of Juril being official vacations there wouldn't be much reason to hang around the Coven if not for all the shenanigans going out there. Turns out you can still get to cast a lot of spells when magical winter is in full force. Given how hot the summer is, this does feel like a bit of respite. Caster figures that with how focused on the element of fire he was, it could be a good chance to try something different—
Nah, he just wants to join into snowball fights, but he quickly finds out that the snow melts in his hands quicker than it should be. (Higher body temperature due to focusing on fire magic, like constantly... who would have thought that could have any side-effects?) but he finds a way around it.
He might be found practicing magic on unsuspecting snow, making it lift from the ground and form into a snowball— with better or worse effect. Not every attempt ends in a snowball, but the ones that does end with it launching straight into nearby person's face (perhaps that's you). Projectile snow, hell yeah. ]
Oh! My bad— [ He might say that as an apology but the amused lilt in his tone spells it clearly: he's not apologetic at all. Because now that he's on a roll, next snowball is magicked a lot quicker ] Heads up! next one's coming!
[ It was never an accident ]
c. Ice Spires
[ One of the senior witches at Coven certainly has a knack for architecture, turning half of the out-door area into a beautiful, castle-like maze made of ice. It looks especially spectacular during the night, with colorful lights shining through it. It might become less spectacular when you realize it has several floors and is incredibly easy to get lost in. ]
What's with Witches and their mazes? [ Caster huffs, his expression unamused. Good thing he got his fur hood and cloak and... a scarf, obtained elsewhere because the cold is starting to get to him. The scarf is warm fuzzy and definitely wants to be shared... What's with the witches and their enchanted clothing?? He throws the other end of the scarf in the direction of this new lost person (you, most likely). ] Think you could return to the entrance by retracing your steps?
II. THE RESIDENTIAL DISTRICTS
d.
The havenI can't believe we got a hot springs episode[ The extreme way magic shapes this world is still something that manages to surprise him. Not too long ago, there was that plot of land used as a communal garden and place for picnics. Now it's a hot spring in the middle of winter. Amazing.
Late-night bathers might spot Caster soaking in the warm bath, submerged almost to his chin and eyes half-closed. That's a perfect way to relax after a day of work, yes?
Same late-night bathers also might spot him sitting in the warm spring for too long and getting sprayed with the cold-water spell without warning. A string of curses follows. And probably a naked dude, jumping out of the water trying to catch the offending floating bucket for revenge ]
III. THE HARBOR DISTRICT
a. you give me fishing prompt, you bet I will take it
[ Fishing is one of those survival skills that are very useful. Ability to feed yourself is, after all, a key to survival. But to Caster it's more than just that, in fact, it's a hobby. One he enjoys most when he needs to find a quiet moment for himself, you know to escape the business of life or the irritation the magic overload brings— so he tends to engage in it in either early or late hours when crowds are smaller. The ice fishing is no difference, although it brings the excitement of a different method. At various time of the month he can be found melting the holes in the ice and then either with the makeshift spear, or just sitting on a (foldable) chair with a fishing rod.
He's more than likely to smoke a cigarette in the second scenario because old habits die hard.
If approached he makes a STOP gesture ]
Careful, the ice is thin here! [ And he points right at the place you happen to stand. ]
---
[ Alternatively, if he's caught while returning from ice and carrying his haul (bucket of fishes, with ice everywhere and some spell inscription on the bucket itself for extra coolness he can randomly just hand you the bucket ]
Hey, you wanna? It's a fresh catch. [ And it's in your hands now ]

With a bucket and Gae Bolg in hand, folding chair tucked under his arm, he's ready to set up shop. Though...
He gives a cold stare to Caster. He hadn't meant to approach him, he was just making his way out further, not paying much attention to his surroundings. ]
If I fall in, so be it.
[ He's already cold and miserable, what's making it worse going to do? He takes another step, the thin ice cracking beneath his boots. A short distance away, he sets up his chair and bucket and sets Gae Bolg down before he turns back. He walks back to the thin ice with a mildly defiant look. ]

Zelda | Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time | Witch | OTA
[Where there is a winter wonderland, there must be a Scrooge, and Zelda seems content to play a part adjacent to that as she heads up to the Coven despite the announcement that formal classes would be cancelled for the week. How are they supposed to figure out where that dream came from, or how the mirrors work like this! What is she supposed to do with her time? Get a hobby? Ridiculous!
So she makes the hike to practice regardless, only to find that the surrounding area has been transformed into a veritable zoo of icy creatures, and, well... okay, they're pretty impressive. Except--]
I cannot imagine this being popular.
[She says to no one in particular as she examines the pegasi-drawn sleigh. To which the ice pegasus responds with tinkly braying that definitely sounds affronted. It surprises the princess, to say the least.]
Wha-- well, you cannot expect anyone to think it is safe.
[Yes, she is getting into an argument with a snow horse. No, she is probably not going to stop it on her own.]
coven; ice castle you have there
[Of the other events surrounding the Coven, the various castles constructed completely of ice are both the most intriguing and offer the most shelter from the magical snowball war taking place outside. Exploring is fun when it doesn't lead to horrible flashbacks of traumatic experiences! Plus, they give a nice opportunity to test out the divination magic that she so rarely gets the chance to work on.
No, she still doesn't need a hobby, shut up.
If you are also wandering the icy corridors built by the Coven's witches, then her presence will be heralded by a pulse of golden light zipping past underfoot as though following some form of circuitry. She's following after it, and is a little surprised when she runs into someone else along the way.]
Oh, hello. Are you heading up or down?
residential districts; strangled by the red scarf
Oh, Goddesses--
[That is the sound you hear moments before you find yourself wrapped in the woolly embrace of a brand new scarf that is also still currently attached to one (1) Princess of Hyrule. Were you getting groceries? Going to work? Also wandering around the city like some kid that doesn't know what to do with themselves outside of the structure of school? Too bad! The Scarf does not care for your petty mortal problems outside of keeping warm.
Zelda does, however, and the flush that reaches from her cheeks all the way to the tips of her ears is definitely not from the cold as she frantically tries to untangle herself.]
I am... so, so sorry-- this is not my doing, I swear...
[Maybe she should have been more suspicious about the discount she got on this thing, rather than just happy it was something she could afford...]
harbor; and at last icy the light
[The cloak she dons for weekly strolls down to the harbor district is a little less conspicuous in the magically enforced chill, at least, and she would be loath to let this opportunity pass her by. Especially, as she notes, when it seems like her magic is so much stronger in the wake of the new moons rather than under the light of the full ones despite the conventional wisdom of those at the Coven. Something the rest of the city will no doubt think of as another ill omen should it become common knowledge. There's certainly no short supply of those lately, it seems.
Regardless, the illusion does indeed seem to hold much better than it did the last time she tried this. Red eyes remain red; glimpses of skin from under the cloak retain their tanned hue. It's not yet a perfect replication of the disguise she hid herself under for so long, but it's a solid foundation. ... Funny, she spent years waiting for the day she could throw off the false persona, but now that the ability to use it at all has been taken from her, she longs to have it back. Perhaps she'll dwell upon that later (or, more likely, she'll lock those feelings up in a tiny box and throw away the metaphorical key), but for now she sets to wandering the industrious district.
She doesn't intend to stay long, just enough to see if any passersby react particularly strongly to the illusion, but she can't help stopping and staring when she finds the makeshift ice skating area set all aglow with gently twinkling lights, like something out of a dream.]
Hylia's grace...
[Okay, maybe the magic snowstorm is a little cool...]
wildcard;
[hmu in PMs or on plurk at
coven
You're not even a little curious?
[With a smile, he steps forward and pats the pegasus' flank as though it were a real flesh and blood creature. Up close, the craftsmanship, both in terms of sculpture and magical design, is remarkable and yet he's quick to turn his attention back to the young woman beside him.]
I'm glad to meet you under better circumstances, my lady.

Harry Dresden OTA
By late afternoon, Harry can be found in his back yard swearing as he repeats a spell from a scroll and heat washes over his garden, pushing back the snow and cold. He had run, not walked, to the Coven to get help earlier, and they had provided it. Now he just had to maintain it.
And he was annoyed. Not annoyed that he had a new spell to learn, but annoyed that someone had done this without asking. Without consideration. He swore in Fae, Sumerian, Latin, Spanish, and Elvish as he finished the motions needed, and walked back into his house to wash and change.
By evening, after some other errands, he can be found nailing together some boards around and over the garden, not covering it entirely, but making a partial shield to help the magic out a little. He'll gladly tell anyone who comes along what he is doing, and why.
Haven
[ Majima wasn't much changed from his usual mode of dress as he gestured at the boards -- dark suit, boots -- but he had put on a scarf and some gloves as a kind of stopgap until he could shop for a decent overcoat.
He didn't recognize Sumerian, say, but he would get the overall tone of Harry's swearing, should he still be engaged in such. ]

A.
Perhaps he's his foe, if the snowballs levitating over Henry's shoulders are any indication. That's the most obvious conclusion to draw based on that alone... but maybe there's more to it.
Henry squeaks at the ire he's drawn from Soren just from pelting him with a snowball, but it's not a moment later that he pauses, the air about him heavy and contemplative. Then, he brightens up — more than usual, anyway.
"Hey! It's you again!" he calls, pointing at Soren with a finger. "You're the fellow who ran off before you could tell me more about those cat people."
...One of the hovering snowballs takes Henry's pointed finger as a cue to go sailing for Soren's face again, aiming to hit him while he's down.

Even now, children one might think should be in bed were out playing, and what a delightful sight it was! Caren Ortensia | Chimera
[She wasn't impressed by people making everything snow. In other times she would have found it amusing, maybe even enjoyed it but...she had planted a few things, and it wouldn't be able to withstand the chill. It was just good luck that she had managed to save a few of them by bringing them inside and keeping the planters wrapped up and with warmed up rocks.
But when she came to the Coven district and saw that there were warm spells...she tried to find the most witch like individual and pull on their sleeve for attention.]
Do you know how to make the spells to keep the ground warm? Or enchant a rock?
[Better answer quick, she looks grumpy.]
B: Western residence: make it spicy
[She did like free food. And she did like trying local food. Not just because she was hoping to share the recipe with a certain someone either! No, she just enjoyed trying new things from time to time, and spicy foods...she had a fondess for that.
So when someone handed her a spicy seeming bun-a curry bun for that matter-she sniffed it, before making to take a bite.
And was bumped into from behind. And that made her choke on a minor bite of spicy food.
Welp.]
C: Haven: Hot water CW: possible nudity
[She hadn't thought she would enjoy the warm water so much. But she did.
It reminded her of Japan, of how they loved their onsens and warm bath. And pang, funny enough, had her sink into a one, and close her eyes with a deep sigh. Sure, there might be some problems in getting out and being exposed to the cold, but she was prepared.
She had towels and dry clothes nearby. Hearing someone walk nearby, she lazily opened her eyes.]
Are you coming to hover, or are you actually stepping in?
[Caren that's rude.]
D: Harbor: Let it slide
[She had seen the rings and people skating. It was more of a matter of her learning where to get the skates.
She buys them for herself. It's easy enough to warm up, and more still to figure out how to skate. She mostly has to watch other people do it, in order to figure out how to break, how to skate backwards-
Though she tends to pause in whatever she's doing in order to watch the Orphens. That can lead to her getting bumped into, or doing the bumping herself as she drifts. And sometimes that can falling and tangling on the ice. Whoops.]
God above!
[Funny enough she doesn't really swear. Even if she ends up getting cut due to a skate.]
E: Wildcard
Mix it up, try something different! That's what this category is for. If you're not sure, just message me on disco at nammah#9659 !

Yako Katsuragi | Witch | OTA
[ Yako's not going out of her way to get involved in the snowball fighting shenanigans herself, but it's a good opportunity to warm up (literally) her enchantment skills. ]
a: [ In various spots throughout the Coven and Harbor District, Yako's set up with her cast-iron, rune-etched pan, carefully ladling dollops of batter in and expertly flipping them over once they've turned golden. That she appears to be doing so without the aid of a visible fire is less of a mystery to anyone who can detect the active enchantment from the iron pan, keeping it heated to Yako's specifications.
Despite the cold, she's dressed down to a gauzy summer dress, the bare minimum of what decent society in Aefenglom would permit. She glances up when she notices someone come near, wiping off perspiration that's gathered on her brow with the back of one hand. ]
Would you like a hotcake? Guaranteed to keep you warm for at least an hour, even if your clothes are soaked through!
b: [ More rarely, Yako can be found plying her wares in the Western Residential District, though with the monster clientele having less of an actual need for the enchantment side of things, she's gotten a bit more frivolous.
She can be found crouched at one of the hot stones, with three Monster children crowded around her and watching attentively as she drizzles batter thinly into the pan, then adds a bit more.
'I bet she's making a bird!' the Harpy girl declares, only to be nudged in the side by the Puca beside her.
'Nuh uh, it's totally a rabbit.'
'You're both blind,' the Merrow boy scoffs, pushing up his glasses and blinking rapidly. 'It's obviously a fish.'
Yako, who's been quiet until now, laughs and shakes her head, flipping the pancake over to reveal ... a rather lopsided cat. The children groan in unison at being thwarted in their guesses, then shriek in disgusted glee when the pancake starts letting out incredibly realistic-sounding meows. ]
2. winner winner fishy dinner
[ When she isn't playing celebrity chef, Yako can be found either gearing up to trudge out onto the ice or already sitting at a hole chipped through it, a maniacal glint in her eye. She doesn't seem to be having any particular luck, but she certainly isn't short on enthusiasm, casting her line into the waters like her life depends on it.
Occasionally, she can be seen muttering and waving her hands over the bait box she's brought with her; other times, she's gloomily perched on the edge of the ice and peering in, staring at the water like doing so hard enough will cause fish to spontaneously burst out and flop into her mouth. ]
Freshly grilled ice fish... [ She can be heard muttering to herself, like a mantra. ] I want to taste it ... just once ...
3. wildcard
[ Bring your own poison! HMU on Discord or through PM if you wanna do anything specific; the ice fishing prompt is particularly prone to going sideways. ]
2 Its raining fish!
Once there are approximately ten fishes laying around and in front of her, hands grab the edge, and the Oliver pulls himself up and out of the water, wearing only pants as he sits next to where the fishes have been hurled. The snow was not good for his bear-side, but a little dip in the water and the possibility of hot food made him willing to sea dive, especially since he was good at it.
"Is that enough?"
A blonde man with brownish fur on his head instead of hair, save for still blonde eyebrows, he was lean and muscled, with patches of fur at different points on his body and obvious claw points growing on his fingers.

Connor | Detroit: Become Human | Merrow
Prompt 1
[Connor is wandering in his usual clothes, a simple waistcoat over a thin shirt, and is getting a few strange looks from the more bundled up people. The cold doesn't seem to affect him, though he occasionally rubs his scaled hands together as though keeping the chill out of them. That's more of a habit, though. He seems quite comfortable with the weather, but there's one thing that's annoying him; the pool in his back yard is frozen over. Hank is trying and failing to thaw it out with flaming middle fingers, so it's up to him to solve the problem.
He can either find a heat rock, or ask a Witch to help him. A Witch might be more effective. Connor taps people on the shoulders who seem like they could be Witches (of course, if he knows you already are, it's a bonus) and gives them polite smiles.]
Hello, are you a Witch? I have a slight problem I need solving.
[He could just go to the sea, but... the whole point of the pool is so he doesn't have to. If nothing else, he can offer payment- or a dip in a (hopefully) heated pool? He's probably assuming this will go better than it actually will.]
Prompt 2
[You know what is fun? Snowball fights. You know what Connor has never done before? Had a snowball fight. It all starts when a well-meaning kid throws one at him and hits him squarely in the side of the head. Connor seems stunned for a moment, before balling one up and throwing it back. Not too hard because he's not into hurting children, but once the child has gone on his way Connor finds himself wanting to continue.
He balls up some snow, and hides behind a low wall. As someone passes, he throws a snowball directly at the back of their head. He won't be hard to make out as the culprit, because he's standing there looking expectant, like he wants the other person to throw one back.]
Prompt 3
[Having given up on the pool, or having just decided he wants more company, there's a Merrow basking in the heated springs closest to his own home. His tail is long and he has a terrible habit of swishing it in the water when he's content, which may or may not irritate everyone else. He can handle cold water just fine, but there's something about the steamy water that makes him feel good. He looks to his closest companion and smiles slightly, the fins on his ears perking up.]
Do you live close by, too?

Katsuki Bakugo | My Hero Academia | OTA
[Katsuki... hates this. He fucking hates the cold. Maybe he's always chalked it up to having fire powers in order to admit that he's not sensitive. But now he has no powers and is completely miserable.
He wanders through the western residential area, trying to go about his business as usual as if to say "fuck you" to the cold, but it's clear that he's suffering. He has his arms wrapped tightly around himself and he's holding his body rigid in order not to shiver.
Katsuki pauses, sniffles, and then sneezes. An adorable, soft little noise that doesn't fit him at all.]
Goddamn it!
[Well, he's not capable of being entirely cute. Someone get this idiot some warm clothes]
ii. a warm respite
[So a turnskin isn't the normal sort of that you see lounging around in the warmth but Katsuki has always been pleased to be an exception. When he hears they're serving spicy food, he can't resist checking it out. He fills his belly with a soup that burns going down and feels like it starts a little fire in his belly before deciding to take a nap on one of the heated stones.
He's curled up on his side like a dog.
Go ahead and bother him if you dare.]
iii. a not so furry friend
[Katsuki usually ignores the Coven because he's a bitter little baby and he's still not all about that magic thing. But he's ended up there in search of some magical warming clothes because this snow is apparently not fucking going away!
And along the way he's found a friend.
It's a little Pomeranian made of snow and it following along at his heels. Or... to be more accurate, it keeps trying to bite his ankles. If it could make noise (but it is made out of snow so...) it would be barking furiously at him. He turns around and glares furiously at it.]
Back the hell off, you little fucker!
[You can almost hear the snow Pomeranian bark "NO FUCK YOU". Basically, it's Katsuki if he were a shitty little animal.]
i
it’s warmer west, thanks to the very many heated stones and spices that spike foods. eren’s taken refuge on one of them the minute a naga slithers off with their bonded witch, carried away with warm, what are those, snuggies? snuggies for snakes. the socialization here is enough to meet eren’s monster behavior quota, having no qualms in sharing a rather large bowl of spicy curry between a few other monsters sitting at the stone’s corner. there’s still plenty of room left! and when eren catches bakugo walking about and cursing the weather, he sniffs strongly, constantly to keep a slight runny nose at bay, but holds eye contact until he feels the burn of his sixth sense telling him someone was “watching him”.
he’ll wave him over almost flippantly with bandaged fingers when, and if, he ever sees the horned part-dragon. come to the dark side, boy. ]

Fang | FF13 | Turnskin
[The snow was novel, even if Fang was sad to see the hot weather go. The snowball fights were great, too. It was a great way to appease her new hunting instincts without anyone, you know, getting hunted down, and there plenty of structures and snow drifts to hide behind. By the later weeks, though, Fang's losing her patience with it. Since her first transformation, her body temperature's been running higher. That made heat-seeking snowballs extremely annoying when she's just out and about.]
[Fang can either be competitively engaging in guerrilla snow warfare like the ambush predator she's turning into, or chasing down the poor witch that's mistakenly hit her with the umpteenth heat-seeking snowball. Or hell, maybe you meant to target her. Live free.]
II.b
[The heated rocks were popular, and for good reason. The cold was bad enough without turning into something reptilian, and Fang couldn't imagine what'd it be like cold-blooded.]
[The current occupant of the crowded rock gets nudged with a foot to move over.] Scoot.
[Fang might be a turnskin, but she's come into very little of her fur and lived in a desert for the last decade. Her lined winter cloak just wasn't doing enough.]
Wildcard:
[Hit me with another prompt! Fang's also doing a lot of ice fishing and roasting, and loitering around the pickpocket-plagued aristocratic district.]

Or at least she thought she'd been, but Fang's attack came less like a flurry of snowballs and more like an actual pounce, and the shield of snow she'd quickly tossed up to diffuse the balls wasn't going to do much against that. ]
H-hold on! [ She didn't get out much more than those words before it was too late. ]

crymaria | witch | ota
[Snowy landscapes aren’t unfamiliar to her, so Crymaria is lucky enough to have arrived with a woolen coat and fur hat. The coat has already made an appearance despite the less chilly weather before this, as it seems she wears it often, but for once it’s appropriate to the weather. The bite of the magical chill inspires her to peruse some of the accessories that are available in the Eastern Residential area. She sorts through a stack of neatly-folded scarves but ultimately leaves them be, instead opting to try on a longer pair of well-lined gloves that almost match the coat she’s wearing. After finding the first, Crymaria pulls it onto her left hand to test the fit.
She drops her hand while she looks for the mate—and immediately finds said hand encased in the warm embrace of someone else’s. It startles her—it’s not as if she’s had her hand held all that often, and the gesture might be comforting if it didn’t feel so inappropriate and…creepy. Her fingers twitch.
Crymaria looks at the person latched onto her hand out of the corner of her eye, not quite turning to face them.]
What do you think you’re doing? Let go of my hand.
[After an utterly silent, still pause, her voice raises in pitch and volume.] Why won’t you let go? This isn’t funny!
[Because she’s realized that she can’t move her hand, either and has no one else to blame.]
ii. snowbunny but you;
[She’s delighted by the appearance of the snow animals around the Coven; the first time Crymaria sees them, she feels something in her chest melt despite the chill. They have no awareness of how fleeted and orchestrated their lives are, and they don’t seem to care.
With little regard for the damp chill of the snow she kneels in, Crymaria drops to her knees to introduce herself to one of the snowy rabbits hopping around the grounds. Sitting here, watching it, she even smiles a little bit, holding her hand out palm-up to be investigated.
It hops around to investigate her hand, her knee, her pockets.]
Ah, do you want something…? I don’t even think you can eat. Even if you could, everything around here would probably melt you…
[She strokes between its ears with two hesitant fingers, making sure not to get too much heat from her hands onto it—in case it really does melt.]
Maybe someone else has some idea. I’m sorry I’m no use at all…
iii. i don’t have a good pun for this one;
[Some Winter Witch.
It’s not the first time she’s thought that since arriving here and not the last. That wretched shared nightmare from the last month has her convinced that her own failure is imminent. Whatever power she ever had in her life, even if it brought her suffering, it’s been stripped away and replaced by magic she still feels useless at controlling. Even surrounded by snow, she feels disconnected from feats that once seemed easy to her.
It’s twisted her thoughts enough that, whenever devoid of any other distractions during the snowstorm, she’s practicing in the winter wonderland surrounding the Coven. Enchantments, evocations, illusions, all small flashes i the pan compared to what she hoped she could conjure. Her breakthrough came as a surprise when she found herself caught in the middle of a snowball fight. A barrier…one that easily blocked the wayward snowballs and shattered them into dust.
The end result? Crymaria will rather tactlessly approach someone she finds goofing off in the snowscape and ask to join the games in a way that makes it sound like she isn’t particularly interested in having fun at all.]
You. Can I ask you to throw something at me?

You could feed it some ice. [He suggests, shrugging with one shoulder.] It kind of makes sense, doesn't it?

The SQUIP | Be More Chill (Broadway)
[The SQUIP is entirely unused to cold this intense. This particular unit was activated during the early autumn, so, even secondhand, it's never directly experienced temperatures like this before, even through Jeremy's senses; it steps outside in its typical summer wear, and immediately regrets that decision.
It wasn't expecting the snow. This place just keeps getting more and more bizarre. It picks up a set of winter gear for itself, as much in its trademark stark white as possible.
It learns about the tricky little charm placed on the winter clothing for sale the hard way. Whoever you are, whatever you're doing, the SQUIP has just grabbed your hand in its own, and it seems just as surprised as you are about it.]
-- ah. Sorry, I think someone must have tampered with these gloves.
The Coven
[The SQUIP sees other Witches creating ice spires, and it is nothing if not theatrical. Naturally, it has to construct itself one...
... and, naturally, the shapes are sharper, the walls and floors patterned with circuitry rather than the typical glittering organic swirls. It constructs itself a grand ice castle of hard-edged geometric shapes, although the outer walls do curve in oddly organic ways, the structure dividing itself into two equal hemispheres.
Its throne room sits at the center, and it does create itself a handsome throne, intricately-decorated with lines of glittering, icy circuits; along the back of the throne itself is an oblong shape, a very peculiar pattern of wires and circuitry carved into it.
A self-portrait.
It surveys this throne, seeming pleased with itself-- more with the demonstration of its power than anything.]
Ice Skating
[The SQUIP has never first-hand gotten to skate in any form, and it's interested to try it. The grace natural to its human form benefits it greatly on the ice; it takes to the new activity easily, its motions easy and loose as it gets comfortable with its balance on the blades...
... and, of course, begins to showboat. It teaches itself a few tricks and spins, though it tries to keep from being too over the top. It doesn't want to seem unapproachable, after all.]
gloves.
-and then faltering, because the person who just grabbed her looks very, very confused. ]
Of course, [ she mutters, looking down at the gloves themselves, refocusing her ire and suspicion on them. ] Magically change the weather, might as well mess with the things people need for that weather, too.

the lone wanderer "lex" | fallout | chimera | ota
[ The Witches have magic on their side, but Lex - Lex has experience. A snowball is just a grenade that doesn't explode, really; the snow forts and trenches and existing walls of the buildings are exactly the type of urban warfare that she's used to (except less ruinous).
Scraping snow together with her new talons, Lex eyes the group across from them in their own snow fort. They're scattered, for now; making more ammunition. She grins, canine teeth glinting. ]

[ Iramaat doesn't have talons - just fingers - but she's packing snowballs all the same with her gloved hands, eyes glinting with mischief. This is exactly the sort of thing she enjoys, even if winter isn't her chosen season. ]

Mitsuru Kirijo | Persona 3 | OTA
“Most curious.” Mitsuru says, studying an object in her grasp. Said object appears to be encased in glass, and leaving it almost fogged over from frost. It bumps against the sides of the glass with a soft pinging sound, leaving ice crystals behind.
…Does she really have an enchanted snowball in a jar? That appears to be the case, with how the thing is bouncing around the jar like a hyper, white, rubber ball.
“Impressive… I didn’t realize enchantments were capable of this. And this doesn’t seem in a hurry to melt, either.”
B. Residential:
Perhaps it isn’t too surprising to find Mitsuru soaking in one of the hot springs. She settles back against the rocks, opting to break out her swimsuit for the moment. (It IS technically summer after all, and she may as well get some mileage out of it.) Her eyes slid shut, enjoying the temperature… Until she hears footsteps. That’s when her eyes snap open, and she looks at whoever has stumbled upon her.
“Who goes-!?” She starts to ask.
The sudden movement raises her temperature, which seems to cue a splash of cold water hitting everyone. She gives a yelp at that, and in response the warm water surges up… Likely splashing everyone else for good measure.
C. Harbor:
A waxing, nearly full moon finds Mitsuru out on the frozen harbor, with a certain restlessness to her movements. She’s dressed for the cold weather in a thick black coat, and almost managing her way across the ice with minimum slips.
…The key word being ‘minimum.’ Whether it’s the cold making her sluggish, or her getting used to skates, there’s still a skid here and there. Enough that it can carry her into some of the others nearby, bumping into them.
“My apologies… Not my most graceful moment.”
It seems she still has a few things to learn about ice skating... And perhaps how to dress more warmly, going by how she shivers.
B
Ryoji had been doing his best to be sneaky. Really, he had. But it seems he was not sneaky enough since Mitsuru caught him right in the act. Whoops? But it seems that his punishment is a nice splash of cold water...followed by warm water. Man, today is just not his day. Ryoji stands there for a bit, his hair covering his face before he forces it back with his hands.]
Oh. Well isn't this...funny. Haha...
[Oh boy.]

Closed to Liliana
And that required help.
So, on the porch of their overly large home, poor Liliana finds herself being tugged towards the fresh-fallen flakes.
"Come on. I know it's stupid, but it'll be fun."

Cute.
Well, cute until it's Liliana being dragged outside. Not that she's doing much of anything else at the moment, but--
"Oh yes, who doesn't like rolling things into...bigger...round things."
