[the day's finally come, bright and auspicious according to the fortune-teller. betrothal gifts have been exchanged earlier in the month, and now the back yard attached to the wangxian cottage has been transformed from a place of peaceful seclusion to one meant for celebration and receiving guests.

but there is still plenty to do for anyone who volunteered to show up early and help: tables that need to be moved into place, chairs that need to be set up. the couple's winged bunnies will be there to assist, nibbling on red and gold cards or flying through the air with streaming pale blue and bright red ribbons to be attached to things.

there's also boxes of noisemakers to be placed on the table - small drums and flutes and party poppers, all for chasing away bad luck. there's even a few small fireworks, just in case any lingering summer pixies are looking for something to set on fire.]

[ceremony]

[the reason for the day. it's rare to see wei wuxian and lan wangji out of their usual colors, but no one can deny that they look good in red. lan wanji in red robes and a red forehead ribbon, wei wuxian in red robes and a red veil, long black ears poking through. the ceremony itself consists of various little rituals. they make their bows - to heaven and to earth, to their parents, and to each other. finally, each cuts a lock of his own hair and knots them together, sealing them up in a little pouch. the two of them have been one for awhile now, but now it's official. now no one can say otherwise.

all of this is done in front of hiccup - chief hiccup, overseeing all of the rituals that wei wuxian explained to him and adding even more legitimacy to the union.

it ends on a less solemn note, with the two exchanging smiles and laughter, and wei wuxian predictively jumping into his new husband's arms.]

[considering whose wedding it is...a puca's wedding, naturally games should be expected. guests are invited to initiate and share their own favorites, so let aefenglom's limbo champion be decided here and now.

there are drinking games and dice games, and one somewhat dangerous game that involves a blindfolded wei wuxian receiving kisses on the cheek from various guests, and "attempting" to guess which kiss came from his husband.

music and dancing are equally welcome, so pull your date close or get to know someone new.]

[the feast begins, and if both grooms seem to be missing by this point, well, that just leaves more food for the guests! red remains a common theme in dishes, along with roast pork and fish. there are soups, with the pork rib and lotus root having its own place of honor. it goes without saying that jiang yanli's cooking is the best, and therefore the first to disappear from the tables.

there's also plenty of vegetarian dishes and desserts, tea and alcohol in equal measure. eat, drink and be merry well into the night. the noise just might cover up a pair of very happy newlyweds.]

as soon as she tastes the first spoonful, her eyes go wide, and she swallows quickly to exclaim, ]

Wow! It's really delicious! And you grew up eating this? Ahh, that's so lucky... [ even back when her mother was alive, they were so poor they couldn't afford much variety for food, and after her mother's death, she fended for herself, getting either what arlong gave her or what she stole. ]

[Of course he's not going to mind that. It was exactly what she should have been doing since he had suggested it to her, but he did take the second bowl when she offered it to him. When he was ever going to turn down his sister's soup?

But he waited for her to try it first before he took a bite of his own]

Yes, she made it for us on special occasions or just when we needed it. I have never found anything better.

That's so sweet... it reminds me of when my mother used to make us crepes with tangerine sauce. She only made it on special occasions, too.

[ there's a flash of something bittersweet in her expression — it used to be her favourite dish, but it was also the last bellemere ever cooked for her, and she's not eaten it since. ]

[Considering what she had told him before, he suspected it had been a while since she'd had it, but he filed that away as interesting information]

Mm, it was.

[ sighing, but with a slight smile, she falls silent and keeps eating the soup.

after they've eaten, she goes to grab them a couple of glasses of wine, because why not — her alcohol tolerance is through the roof, anyway so she has nothing to worry about there. somewhere halfway through the second glass, and in the middle of a conversation, she glances around them and — ]

Oh, I guess people are starting to leave... I didn't realise it was getting that late!

[Jiang Cheng also had a good tolerance for alcohol as well. Well, not as good as WuXian's, but certainly better than WangJi's. He had just taken a sip of his wine when she spoke up. He lowered his glass and glanced around]

Yes, it does look like everyone is leaving. Shall I walk you home?

[ playfully: ] It's only proper, right?

[ meaning, yes, that sounds nice, because while she'd be absolutely capable of walking to her little cottage on her own, it's much nicer to do it with him.

as they're walking, her hand on his arm, she asks, ]

So... did you have fun? [ she actually genuinely wants to know! she did, and she thinks he did, but it's best to be sure. ]

It is. A gentleman must make sure a lady gets home safely.

[Probably more important in a world where ghosts and demons were fairly commonplace, but still...

He did indeed offer his arm to her as they started walking out]

I did. The wedding and the reception went well. Did you enjoy it?

[ that just gets her to smile softly — it's really so far from any sentiment that those in her world have, where rarely anyone would bother, and if they did, they'd likely have ulterior motives. ]

Mm, of course I did! It was a lovely ceremony, and the reception was a lot of fun. I've finally been to at least one successful wedding!

[ it doesn't take them long to her cottage, and outside the wooden gate that guards the garden, she stops and lets go of him. ]

Thank you! For walking me, and... [ what seems to be on impulse, being in such a good mood, she takes a step closer, leaning to peck him lightly on the cheek. ] ... for the nice date!

[ there's a lilt to her words, but she means it: she did have a nice time with him. ]

[There's a wistful tone when he said that. Even though WuXian had not been a part of Yunmeng Jiang for quite some time, it was hard not to think back on the day that WuXian had promised to be his right-hand man when he was sect leader.
