If the eggs aren't fertilised, we've got nothing to worry about. [ And almost on cue, a crack forms on one of the eggs, the little beak of a newborn chick poking out. ]
-- Well. Shit. Looks like I've made some orphans today. [ He's really the worst right now. ]

[ gawd. don't you know any biology son. anyway it doesn't matter because it immediately becomes apparent they weren't unfertilized eggs.
Siegfried takes a moment to place the carcass inside of his travel bag, because if there's one thing that would make this even sadder, it would be having the first thing the chick sees be its charred mom.
He kneels down to peer at the nest more closely. ]
Don't beat yourself up, Jean. It was an accident, and we should be thankful your lightning missed the nest. We can give the mother hen a small burial, if you'd like.
[ He also feels really bad, but he doubts showing his own emotion would make Jean feel any better. he feels guilty enough. ]
I wouldn't be surprised if the jolt is what triggered this little guy into trying to come out.
[ He waits patiently, reaching down to remove a tiny piece of shell that the chick is trying to get rid of. A neighboring egg quivers. ]

It's good that they don't know what the fuck just happened. [ He doesn't know whether chicks would even have that understanding, but he would certainly feel awful if they did -- having the first thing you see upon entering the world be the charred body of your mother. ]
... I guess we could bury that hen. [ It's the least he should do since he started this problem. The next egg starts to crack, another little beak poking out. Soon, all the eggs begin hatching, the older chicks (older by a few minutes) already learning to chirp and call for their mother.
With Siegfried and Jean being the first beings they see, it's easy for them to assume these two large men are their parents now. ]

[ The first one is almost done shedding its shell, but now its covered in mucus, and clumsily trying to make its way to Jean. ]
Actually, mostly on you, it seems like. [ The irony... ]

[ This is so unfortunate. He KILLED their mom. Still, Jean doesn't look opposed to raising those chicks. He feels a responsibility to them now. Dropping down to a squat and scooting closer, he brings his hand near the chick, letting it brush against him. ]
I guess I could take them back since I have the space. I just don't know the first thing about raising chickens. [ He was always a middle class boi. ]

[ That much is evident by the way the second chick thinks Jean's finger is a worm, and is trying to wrap its beak around it accordingly. ]
Hmm. I've never raised chickens specifically, but if they're anything like other wild baby birds, it shouldn't be too difficult to figure out.
[ he's tended to birds and other animals in his wanderings before... food, water, and keeping them safe was all that mattered, right? ]

Aah, looks like they're all whining now. The nearest market is a while away. Do we just -- look for bugs for them?
