here's a hymn to welcome in the day
Who: Wolf (
divineconfetti) & you!
When: Throughout Iuneril.
Where: Various locations.
What: June quests and additional catch-all!
Warnings: Currently: none.
I— leeches and lycanths.
( the small apothecary is a quiet and slightly dusty sort of place, tucked in-between two much taller buildings like a diminutive middle child standing dejected between its two larger siblings. though wolf originally looked to the turnskin owners with some wariness, he found that they were for the most part very pleasant, if not a little energetic and a lot eccentric. they seemed very happy that one of the new monsters had taken up the offer (or taken up the bait?) to help them test out their new concoctions, and they end up shepherding him to a small table towards the back of the cramped, crowded store.
as the two that had shepherded him there move back towards the counter and begin discussing something with yet another turnskin working in a back room, wolf quitely takes notice of motes of dust and shed fur forming bunnies under shelves and in the corners of the room. he sighs, scratching at his jaw. )
a | ( for any other monsters come to leeches & lycanths to act as guinea pigs, they are sat at the same table as wolf after arrival and explanation of their being there. soon they are brought some very... interesting-looking vials of liquid, and asked to drink and then sit for observation for an hour or two. the turnskins leave them to their devices, though wolf notices them looking over towards them with bright, excited eyes from time to time. they gleam in the lower light, and he thinks it might seem predatory if they didn't seem so interested in the effects of the potions rather than the subjects themselves. he returns his attention back to the potion sitting in front of him. the color seems to shift between purple and green as one looks at it, with the odd sheen of an oil slick.
certainly not appetizing, but that is not what wolf being paid to do here. so, without a word to his companion, he takes up the glass vial in his right hand and drinks down the whole thing in one gulp, setting the empty glass back down on the table with a thud. the taste is, in a word, terrible, but he's accustomed to such things, thanks to the bitterness of the healing gourd's medicine.
he immediately feels a little queasy, though he's wondering if it's a side-effect or just unease at the taste and the viscosity of the potion. he looks up to his companion, quirking one scarred eyebrow. ) What do you think? ( if they have already drank it, what they think of whatever they just consumed. if they have not, well... maybe whatever their life choices were, leading them to this situation. )
b | ( and for anyone else around town, you might come across wolf just as the sun is beginning to set. it bathes the city in oranges and crimsons, with the far horizon fading into pinks and purples. it's beautiful, and one might think that perhaps it is a little too stunning, because wolf, looking up towards the sky as he is walking down a cobbled street, begins to... list to one side. and then further, and then all the way to the point where he is collapsing sideways into a sizable stack of bags of potting soil outside a flower shop.
it's quite odd for a shinobi to be losing his balance like that, but it wasn't something he was able to overcome — on the way home from the testing at leeches and lycanths, he had suddenly been overwhelmed by a wave of vertigo. now, rubbing his head with his right hand, he blinks up into what passers-by might be gathering around to see what is wrong or lend a helping hand, finding his vision blurring in a way that makes it hard to distinguish who or what is there.
oh, and there's a sizable greenish mark blooming under his left eye, matched by another that seems to have started to spread across his throat. )
II— fetch!
( wolf had taken it upon himself to try to locate some of the more dangerous objects, and those had to be the ones located in the wilde. should any of those wraith-like creatures appear, he is ready with a variety of weapons — but what he had not been very well-prepared for was the bees.
it had rained in the morning, and now that humidity is rising up into his face as the noon-time sun beams down from above. muggy and increasingly warm, it draws the insects from their homes, which seem to be interlaced all around this particular meadow on the outskirts of the wilde. wolf had listened to the instructions carefully on how to find the objects required, so he is certain that the flowers are nearby. but with the flowers came the risk of the insects, which were lazily droning about and doing their business pollinating not only the tiger lilies in question but also many other types of flowers and plants in the area.
there are a lot of them, and that seems to concern wolf. his brow his creased and his mouth settles into a frown.
he is not alone in this endeavor, however, so he glances to his companion. ) I am not concerned with being stung. However... ( he glances back over the meadow that stretches to the edge of the wilderness, hearing the humming undercurrent of the droning of the bees as he does so. ) They could cause problems. And it was requested that the bees not be accidentally brought back.
( his shinobi training did not prepare him for this. )
III— wildcard.
( for anything else that does not fit in here! maybe looking into obtaining the other items mentioned in the fetch quest! also, in addition to these quests, wolf is also going to be helping out with festival preparations; he will mostly be doing manual labor down in the harbor district, but you can always drag him into making flower arrangements or attempting to bake cookies or something! I am down for whatever, but feel free to contact me at
lycanthropic if you wanna figure something out! c: )

Leather creaks when she kneels, inadvertently letting the sun hit his eyes again. Shadows might darken her expression too much for the flat line of her mouth to be visible. ]
You— can you hear me? Tell me how many fingers I'm holding up.
[ Trick question. She hasn't raised either hand. ]
no subject
his eyes screw shut when the person who had been standing between his gaze and the sun kneels down; he blinks his eyes open, and he's aware that she's there, but he certainly can't tell enough to be able to answer the question. he frowns and at first he merely grumbles a response, though he does continue to just undercut the question itself and reply, ) I cannot tell.
( how completely shameful. a shinobi is only as good as they are at any given moment, to defend their master or do as they are told. why had he volunteered to test the potions again? it had just seemed like something that he could do, at the time.
the green splotch below his eye has grown to the point where it looks like he'd been punched there — if bruises were lime green, that is. )
My vision... my hearing... ( he trails off, shaking his head, brow furrowing against a ringing in his ears. )
no subject
She clasps her knee, thinking the problem over. ]
Then I'm not sure what good speaking to you will do, but...
[ Two gentle taps over his shin, to prepare this man for her proximity and what she intends to do. The leather of her glove closes under his elbow, next, to encourage him forward. Ideally, he doesn't lash out and will permit the help of a shoulder to lean on.
Ideally. ]

he does what he can to facilitate the shift in movement. were this years ago and he more on edge, he wouldn't have allowed such a thing, but, well... wolf has gone an indeterminate amount of time with the power of resurrection, so currently he's thinking, "if something goes amiss and she attacks, I will just come back."
eventually he will realize he no longer has the power of resurrection here. until then, he will live with this very dangerous misconception.
she manages to help him to his feet, though his head is still spinning enough that he isn't confident in walking yet. he grimaces, saying after a moment, ) If we can find a place for me to sit and rest, just for a moment. It will pass.
( the other side effects had, so hopefully this one would too? )

Those clothes...
Of everything found in this city's questionable fashion, it's most like home. She resolves to not leave him be until curiosity is satisfied. ]
Forgive me, but I don't believe that for a moment.
[ Nel offers up a light smile out of a polite reflex rather than any inborn sincerity or kindness, remembering too late his sight problem. Just as well; she drops it too quickly for it to have been real. ]
Tell me your name and what direction to go in— call me Nel.
no subject
wolf doesn't seem very happy with her statement; his brow furrows further, and he grunts a nonverbal reply. this situation is apparently quite difficult for him to be in — he is very used to being thoroughly self-sufficient, so being afflicted in a still-largely-strange place is a step below excruciating. in the end, it is up for her to believe whatever she wants, and if she was unwilling to help, he would try to... hobble somewhere else to wait this out.
fortunately, she was not quite so stubborn. only half so stubborn. the shinobi sighs. )
Wolf. ( he does not remark on her name, but he holds onto it for later. ) ...North would be best. ( it is the direction of his home, after all. they were not too far away, from what wolf remembers of where he was before this had descended upon him, but he's not really confident in exactly where it is now... )

A scan of the horizon helps to reorient them, thanks in part to the distant structures that serve as landmarks. ]
Perfect. Thank you for grunting at me just the once.
[ Mild non-humor is the feeblest kind of attempt to distract Wolf from his symptoms and suffering, and she might not improve them after hoisting his arm and torso a pinch higher. Getting him down the street is slow progress, but it's progress. ]
It's a wonder that you're sure this won't be an issue for long, Wolf. Something convinced you to that effect, or were you blustering?

When the Witch who requested the materials described the area as a "hotspot" for them, this isn't quite what he imagined. Wolf might not be concerned with being stung, and Akira isn't either (he's taken much worse), but disturbing a swarm of this magnitude will result in more than just one or even a handful of stings. It doesn't help that he's especially wary of the flora and fauna around here—some things are a direct reflection of those back home, others brand new, but the worst are the ones that look similar to something he knows but have new, usually magical properties.
He glances over at Wolf. (Noya didn't mention his short stature when describing his roommate previously—maybe because it trumps even Noya's own. Imagine Akira's surprise when encountering him earlier on the way out here and putting two and two together.) ]
I don't suppose you know any magic...
[ It seems like a few spells would come in handy right now. If only. ]

wolf had not been similarly warned about the teenager's height, but he's accustomed enough to this sort of thing that he didn't really need to be. aside from emma and lord kuro and the divine child, both of whom were actual children, he tends to be the shortest one around. it just ends up being something that he seems determined to ignore, never really having had issue with his own height but similarly not really knowing how to address it any further than that.
addressing the problem at hand was far easier.
wolf sighs, shaking his head. ) I was told I did not have the aptitude for such things. ( he is used to figuring out problems like this on his own, with the use of his skills and tools, but... he has to admit. magic certainly would make this easier. )
There is no guarantee that they will swarm if we approach. Perhaps it is just a matter of not making ourselves a threat.

[ Alex had been walking behind the man for some time now, heading home after a day's work of knitting. And while she hadn't given it too much attention, she didn't think she noticed any signs of one too many drinks at the tavern. Fatigue, maybe?
She's crouching down in front of him, looking over for injuries. His eyes weren't focused, and there was no missing the odd coloring forming on his face and neck. ]
Wha-what happened to your face?
[ Those didn't look like bruises. ]
no subject
a question. two. it's hard to focus on them. he... is going to have to go back to the apothecary tomorrow and tell those furry bastards that something they'd tried today has a hell of a stinger on it. "in cauda venenum," indeed.
the words slowly filter through his consciousness. his face? ugh. he doesn't even want to know. hopefully it's temporary. the rest of it had been, so he isn't too alarmed yet, but he might start to worry if it didn't abate soon. )
I am fine. I am just — dizzy. ( he frowns. offering to help those turnskin out had been a mistake. he isn't even really sure why he'd done it; some sort of impulse? how foolish of him. ) I am... not sure if I can stand.
no subject
Alex reaches out to grip at his arms. ]
I'm gonna pull you up, okay? In one, two.. three!
[ She leans back against her heels to try and help him to his feet, and if successful, will move so that his arm is around her shoulders to try and keep him steady. ]
no subject
he grunts in acknowledgement, and with the guidance of her hands at his arms to help him up, he's able to get himself back to his feet. he sways, though, and it's fortunate that she helps steady him, or else he might have fallen again (twice as embarrassing, especially for a shinobi of his skill...).
a short breath escapes through his nose; he is still squinting, vision still blurred. ) I am certain it will pass, with some time. ( his brow furrows; he is not particularly used to asking for help in such a brazen manner... ) If you would - show me to a place where I could rest, I would be appreciative.
no subject
[ She does stumble a little, almost going down with him, but she gets them somewhat stable enough to start walking. ]
Do you live far from here? I can take you to your home.
[ Rather than just sitting some place outside it was better if he could rest straight. ]
no subject
wolf is not a particularly tall man, but he is fairly dense for his height — it's commendable that alex is able to get him off of the ground without aid, but once he's on his feet, he's mostly able to keep himself there, with her steadying guidance. he is somewhat embarrassed that he needs the help. he is thinking he should perhaps offer to compensate her for her time. or maybe that would be rude... )

It certainly... tastes like medicine. ( you know, if your only qualification for a medicinal taste is "bad". ) Although I don't remember being sick. I have to wonder what they're watching for.
( cursed potion roulette, where are the animal characteristics at? )
no subject
well, the spirit of the name, anyway. certainly no one continues to call him "cub," twenty years later.
wolf grumbles a nonverbal response. the potion was not too much worse than what he is used to, drinking the medicinal waters from his healing gourd or eating whatever the healing pellets were made out of or eating actual wasps in order to poison himself on purpose. let's just say drinking a mysterious potion is relatively low on the scale of weird shit he does to himself in the supposed name of survival.
though maybe, after going through whatever this potion would make him go through, he would regret this. because none of this is for survival. it's just... for, what, money? and not even a lot of it. )
They seem to be testing it. Perhaps they worry it might not do what they want it to do.
( he scratches at the back of his neck where, after a few more minutes, he will notice is quite a bit more furrier than usual. )
no subject
Of course, ( he starts, ) but it would be nice to know what the intended effects are supposed to be too.
( take that fur, for example. is that intended? accidental? is this a potion for people who've gone bald in their twenties? or is that some kind of bizarre side-effect taking place right in front of him? one which luo binghe doesn't feel too inclined to tell wolf is happening, granted, but is still worried enough to reach up and touch at his own neck instinctively — checking to see if it's any fuzzier than it was when he entered the building. )
no subject
wolf has faced all manner of status effects, ranging from strength-sapping poisons to a terror so deep and visceral that it stopped the heart on the spot. in comparison to things like that, he figures that whatever these lupine alchemists could mix up at their benches couldn't possibly compare. though perhaps it is foolish for him to think such things, with his creativity as limited as it is. )
They might not know. ( wolf breathes a long, slow breath through his nose, leaning back a bit into the back of his chair. ) After mixing mysterious ingredients, not knowing what effects they might have... Depending on what happens, some might be what they call "intended." Others might be "unfortunate side-effects."
( this earns a frown, which will probably come more pronounced when he finds out that the potion's effects are now making "wolf" less apt of a name and "wolfman" far moreso. )
iii. ive came to get MY DOG
so where would be the best place to catch sight of his friend, back at the harbor where they first met! the idiot waves his hand in the air in an attempt to try and get the male's attention — what's he doing? moving boxes? or something of the like? who cares because wei wuxian is going to take whatever the other has in his hands into his own. ) Are you done, are you done? You're not busy are you?
( he's just casually going to sit the items in his arms onto the ground, he would have thrown them but he's trying to keep up his good impressions. ) Did you hear about the festivities?! Are you going!? Do you have a date?
BORK
how disappointing to see so much hard work begin to fray away at the edges. but at least owl is not alive to see such a thing, at the very least.
the short man has stowed his coat away and has been working to clear way unclaimed debris from the streets and the docks. apparently those organizing the festival are planning on installing something grand here, so it is burdensome work that needs doing; something wolf is accustomed to. he is carrying a shard of what might have once been the hull of a small fishing boat over his shoulder when he turns to find wei wuxian taking the broken piece of wood from him.
he always arrives like a thunderstorm, having sneaked in over the mountains. wolf sighs, thinking the answer obvious, but perhaps that's the point. ) I was. ( the emphasis being on that word, indicating he understands what's going on here.
oh, well. he's been working for quite some time today. hopefully it's enough.
he hadn't thought too much about going to the festival. such things aren't really his bag. twenty years of training and service as a vassal makes you think your life and time aren't really your own, so why would you ever have fun like that? it's a lot of questions at once (wei wuxian seems to prefer sending them in salvos), so wolf does what he can to answer them. ) I did. ( obviously he knows they're happening, but perhaps he doesn't know too many more details than that. ) I am not sure. And - a date? ...No.
( if this gruff, stoic old man had any kind of questionable fun in his life, it was years and years ago, when he had been younger and stupider. as of late, in ashina, he had been too concerned with impending war and destruction, kuro being kidnapped and potentially used for his powers, and the sudden saddling of immortality to have such concerns... )
*SHIVVERS* DO NOT!
( what's wrong with some fun now and then? especially when it's between two people that get along — probably the thoughts that wei wuxian believes and wolf is steady trying to understand. either way, he's looking around to make sure that other people are nearby and it only takes sight of just one for him to confirm his plans and grab the male's prosthetic side and wrap his fingers around wolf's wrist. ) Now, I can only fix one of those problems! Can you guess which that is?
( wei wuxian will never let wolf take any sorts of L's here so he decides to handle this himself, a small tug as he figures that walking through the harbor to start wouldn't hurt anything. he knows that he's interrupted the male's work, getting in his business is probably bad taste as well but wei wuxian is unable to say that he dislikes wolf's company because he really does find him endearing in a way. )
Or do you want to pick one? You can tell me which, I don't mind ~
( how long has wei wuxian been here? he can't recall the days but it seems there's always something to explore, people to meet and new scenarios for him to throw himself into. this time being the upcoming festival, he doesn't know what that will bring for them but can he really let wolf not go and enjoy himself? it's the talk of the town, it's like teenage gossip where it's like if someone doesn't go — they're a rotten egg. something like that.
so he's unable to allow wolf to become the rotten egg in this saying so he's hoping that's what chosen! if he needs a date, wei wuxian is sure li'l apple can't say no — he's donkey; he can't speak the human language. for now, the cultivator waits as he begins to start their slow walk together, trying to keep this as professional as he can make it but it's rather tedious — he wants to hook arms and just skip around! but he knows better that wolf isn't that type so he's being good. )
you still refuse to accept me for who i am
or, you know, people who were people at all. but we could get into the complex issue of shinobi and their warped sense of personhood later.
he's a little startled to have his wrist grabbed — especially the prosthetic left. he gets the feeling the grisly contraption is off-putting to people. a moment later he is being gently pulled along through the harbor, leaving behind the clearing of the avenue to the others that wolf had been working with. he shoots them a silent, apologetic glance before he is whisked away and out of sight.
he ends up falling into step alongside the other man a short time after, seeming to ponder over the questions, his face a mask of faint vexation. everything was so much simpler when his life was just doing what kuro told him... having to make his own decisions is difficult. the shinobi is not used to examining what he would want in any given circumstance or situation.
he just cuts to the quick of the matter. ) If you wish for me to go, I will go.
( he chooses not to address the other question. this sengoku era shinobi just doesn't really understand the idea of "going on a date." or, rather, he chooses not to. )
stop i dont refuse you, i just have troubles!!
( dianxia or whatever san lang likes to call it, he's not too sure who it's meant to represent but some important god that wei wuxian has never heard before. he's not really into the whole praying aspect but for wolf so he can enjoy himself, he guesses he can indulge in this for once. besides, he doesn't see anything wrong with going out to festivities and if he's able to get the other to join — maybe he'll become more free! probably not, given wolf's demeanor, it'll probably take a whole lot to have him break free of his restraints so wei wuxian laughs softly. )
I think the drinking part will be fun, maybe we can do that together? Oh, tell me where I should meet you tonight so I can tell you I asked the gods for your company? God.. Gods.. ( he'll get the actual scoop later on if this god works for everything or a certain one but he knows that san lang takes great pride in keeping the statue clean, praying before it every day so wei wuxian guesses that it'll work just fine for something simple like this. ) So I'll see if it worked! ( yeah, he's not on the right path with what wolf said but isn't it admirable that he's willing to do so much? sure, he could stop bothering the male and allow him back to his work but wuxian has stolen him so now wolf belongs by his side! )
But if we do go, I'm sure some cute Sister will snatch you off my arm! ( to think, why wouldn't they? wolf may be on the short side and some sister's may prefer taller men but wei wuxian has learned in his third life that height doesn't matter considering he's lost a couple of inches but he's learned that people can find men on the shorter side pretty cute! even if... wei wuxian is a little taller than wolf but not bad. ) Aha! Wait, maybe I can introduce you to someone — I'm not sure if you're into brothers or sisters but I know this one stud with big tiddies so it's a win either way!
( he's helping! accept his help!! )
no subject
If you feel the need. ( wolf is fine... honest... it's not like he's languishing and suffering in the prospects of not going to some rowdy festival with a date on his arm. (the thought of such a thing is so incongruent with him it's hard to even imagine.)
drinking, though... wolf is fine with drinking, especially since he no longer has shinobi duties to keep him sober by the bounds of his honor. even if drinking is less fine with him. the man does not have much of a tolerance. )
I live in the northern part of the Haven, near the wall. Though I could meet you outside the gates of the Coven, if that is easier. It is not far.
( he isn't sure any god could be bothered about his social life, wei wuxian, but you do you...
before they get going, wolf alters his path slightly so he can pick up his coat, scarf, weapons, and a few more of his effects. he rejoins wei wuxian, only to have the conversation take a swerve for the worse (for him). wolf... has no experience in such things. maybe, something like ten or more years ago, he had fooled around when he had been young and foolish. but, if such a thing had happened, it had been against the better essence of what his teachings as a shinobi had been impressing upon him. shinobi were not people, after all — beasts, perhaps, tools, certainly. neither had much use for romantic or sexual liaisons.
he doesn't respond. for a while. and looking over to him would find that he's gone faintly red, though he would hide behind the plausible deniability that it was due to the fact that just a few minutes ago he had been doing manual labor. not because wei wuxian was puzzling over who he found attractive and whether or not he would be interested in someone with big tiddies.
hmmm...! nope, no response from him. none but a quiet clearing of his throat. )
