[While Kaede's view of the Coven and Guard remained dim, the executions had done much to lighten her spirits. And she couldn't just stay in Ursula's infirmary room forever, as much as she wanted to. She needed a change of clothes, and her Bonded could use something else to pass the time. The Coven library was out of the question—but there were many bookstores in the city. Some even recognized her as a Mirrorbound now, and didn't give her any trouble—unnerving Chimera aura and all.
She wasn't a terrible customer—mostly keeping to herself, slowly making her way through a pile of books. Mostly by reading through the table of contents or skimming a few pages to get the gist of it, before sorting it into one of three piles. An acceptable pile, a reject pile, and an "I can't read this" pile. She's been at this for a few hours now, and was making decent headway on the books she'd gathered.
It was still a drain on her, though, and Kaede hadn't been sleeping all that well herself. Staying busy, comforting Ursula, chasing fleeting memories of people who had gone. At one point, Kaede had been blankly staring at one book for almost a solid five minutes before seeming to start awake, rubbing the bridge of her nose with a scaly knuckle. She sighs, looks up—and, unusually when she spotted a person, approached them voluntarily. With the open book held between them like a shield, but still. ]
Do you know what this word is?
[Her claw was pointing to the word 'contagion.' The book itself was something about plague transmission.]
II. House Calls [Nonspecific evening/night time]
[The fall of night no longer brought any dread with it, or even human annoyance that she might have to curtail her movements. Not with eyes that saw everything as if it was brightly lit under the moonlight—and with both moons waxing, the snow still reflecting their luminance, the day might as well not have ended.
The light did cause a slight issue—it was hard to be a shadow when there was light to chase it away, even moonlight. But the city was full of spires and gloomy streets, the sky full of clouds. So one piece of the night's murk was particularly active, darting along streets and through gaps in rickety fences like quick, erratic thoughts.
But what brought the shadow to a stop wasn't a command or a startled sound. It was a pane of glass. And, like a bird striking a window it hadn't seen—the dark-thing smacked facefirst into it with a noisy thud, and dropped to the ground below. She didn't thump then, but a few of the objects Kaede had been carrying on her person did. A book, something in a small box, some sheets of paper, things like that. All lying amidst an amorphous, muttering shadow-blob that was probably mumbling curses to herself.
Kaede had meant to stop by the infirmary, the houses of those she knew—but clearly wasn't on her best game right now. Maybe this was the house next door instead.]

It took Kaede a moment to blink the tiredness away, and even then she didn't quite succeed.]
--oh. I wasn't. I wanted to bring some new books for Ursula to read.
[She closed the book and looked at it with a bit more interest. The antlered Chimera doesn't shuffle it off into the "inappropriate subject material for a possibly sick person" pile immediately, either.]
no subject
Very tired. Caren could relate.]
Ah. That...wouldn't be something comforting to read as a bedtime story, would it?
But it may be informative to someone who wants to learn how diseases work.
[Like you, pink friend.]

[Or to have Ursula read it to her, since she was fairly sure there'd be so many words she'd need to ask her Bonded about she might as well just sit and listen like a child. Her education ending at 10 was a bit of a damper on her reading level.]
...still. I think I'd like to read it.
[For No Reason, obviously.]
no subject
Would you want to read it alone, or with someone?
You may need a dictionary if you're reading it by yourself.
[That's not meant to be insulting. Caren has a medical background, she knows how difficult the words can be.]
no subject
Probably.
[Actually definitely.
The red-feathered Chimera's tail stops, and she looks up at Caren with a blink.]
Can you read it?
[From earlier it'd seemed like she already had, or already understood what was in the book.]
no subject
[She's not surprised. It's a very informative read, she thinks. And she's...about to be dragged into something isn't she.]
Yes? It wouldn't be a problem for me.
[She's been educated. Maybe never in school, but still.]
no subject
...could you...help me?
[Her voice is hesitant and quiet, like she was asking something she shouldn't be.]
no subject
Caren tilted her head, ears twitching, before she straightened.]
Certainly. Is this the only book you'd like help with?
no subject
She unfreezes abruptly, glancing back at the piles of books. Most were either for Ursula, or not relevant--weather almanacs a few years out of dates, dry histories of street names that would probably put everyone in a mile radius to sleep.]
Uh. That's it. For--now, I guess.
[Sometimes Kaede is cold and impassive, sometimes she has the emotional maturity of a flustered awkward child.]
no subject
But she watches, and nods slightly.]
All right, if that's what you want. But...let me know if you have others.
We can make an afternoon of it.
[Wow she upped the ante???]
