[ eren is famous with the old people in aefenglom, who knew!! mostly, if not all of the monster variety, at least. when he walks about with levi during the evening hours to assist granny faun, plenty give the half-dragon a wave hello in between, asking his shorter captain if eren’s been eating well enough.

sully said he’s a stick!! one retorts. lost all his baby fat too fast for them, you see, so . . . quite a few are willing to offer homemade snacks in between the search for the garden murderer. one elderly pair even gives a little extra to humanity’s strongest, saying something about growing more. hah.

eren keeps a few snacks in hand, dropping them where the smell and scent is . . . muddy and different. flowery, maybe? his magic forked tongue (not magic, only weird) slips in and out his mouth constantly for a trail, especially around the uplifted roots of chewed plants and fertilizer. ]

They smell like plant. [ as if there were some sort of literal walking plants. not the worst case scenario or the strangest, but. walking plants. ]

[ old people asking him if Eren's eating well is weird as hell and he doesn't like it. he exercises some restraint, though; "sure, whatever" instead of "how the fuck would I know?" is about as good as he gets. he has... no comment for the couple implying he needs to grow. he's been dealing with people saying shit like that for many years. it just kind of rolls off him now.

meanwhile, he watches as Eren continues to stick his tongue out wherever he pleases like some kind of manbun snake. it's just unsettling to watch, man. ]

...The plants smell like plants. Great. Glad we came to that conclusion.

[ sensei pls. he wishes he could be that obvious! thing is— it isn’t just the tattered plants they find out of their pots and carelessly torn petals along the trail they follow. he shakes his head. ]

What we’re looking for is a living plant.

[ of some sort. eren’s eyes widen a little when he spots a leaf that seems to stick out from the rest of granny’s plantlife, right by levi’s boot, and promptly points it out. ]

—Right.

[ dead plants would have been so much easier... how annoying. when Eren points out the seemingly out of place leaf, he leans down to pick it up (gingerly, of course—it probably has dirt on it), and makes some attempt to examine it.

like he knows shit about plant life. ]

Plant monsters?

Some sort—

[ he does stop dead in his tracks when he sees a pile of leaves left by the granny begin to move. it moved once when it shouldn’t, from the corner of the dragon’s eye in the night he perfected seeing through. images were crisp for him, sharp for every small difference human eyes could ever hope to make.

the tip of his tail is beginning to stand and his head bobs. he knows you’re in there, beast. what pokes out is . . . something with ears, and a snout. ]

[ ...well, he can't see it that well, on account of still being a regular-ass human (mostly), but there's no reason not to just take Eren's word for it. he squints in a feeble attempt to make up for his lack of lizard vision—fortunately he can see just enough to make out the little monster's silhouette.

he can also see Eren's head and tail bobbing, which is... probably normal? he really has no idea at this point. ]

...Okay, so what's the plan now? Don't tell me you're about to go completely feral and eat it.

[ it’s awkward, in a sense. the thing bursts out of dirty leaves, the size of a massive dog, a massive slobbering dog that doesn’t pounce on either of them, per se, but, the young petalwolf does bolt with its ears pinned, tail wagging, and wanting very much to stand on its hind legs so that the fronts can reach shoulders.

plant woofs. and, no, he will not eat them. he shows his dominance rather immediately with a thick hiss that comes from the base of his throat and a display of brighter colors along his scales. he stands fairly rigid with energy that says no, and its trajectory will depend on how levi handles its attention now, once eren rejects. ]

Get it out of here, I take it. [ that’s it, that’s the plan!!!! um— eren scratches his ear. ]
