( it’s difficult, at first, to wrap his mind around it. books – actual printed books on actual paper – are a rarity in his time, what surviving examples of printed media remain are typically kept locked away, safe from prying eyes and sticky fingers, not left out like this for anyone to handle.

except that it’s really not everyone doing the handling.

the volunteers are given a rundown of what is expected of them: gather the returned books, inspect them for damage – recording any fines accrued – and then re-shelve them in the correct areas. avoid engaging with the students more than necessary.

simple enough, really.

what time he doesn't spend replacing books is often spent perusing, his attention drawn particularly to histories of the land and magical theory. )

( haven. he recognizes the place from earlier restoration efforts – efforts he’d assisted with, and been compensated generously for – but is surprised to find that this is the coven’s idea of suitable alternative accommodation.

the buildings start out tall, almost too grand, and far too large for a single person to occupy on their own. eventually, they begin to taper off into smaller, more modest housing. apartments and cottages – two to a place. more manageable than the alternatives, even if it means having to consider the idea of a roommate.

stalls line the streets. perhaps he will step closer to peruse what they have to offer, taking a particular interest in the trinkets of even the slightest magical nature. he might even go so far as to make an inquiry – how much? where did you come by it? a few hundred cunes tucked away in one of the pouches on his belt.

eventually, he’ll move on, heading toward the barracks, though it’s really the bright wall he's hoping to get a closer look at. )

I wonder what it’s made of.

( word of the wilders – the witches that venture beyond the wall, to scout the areas most affected by the cwyld – finds its way to him, and he is quick to volunteer himself to their cause. it’s an excuse to see something of the land beyond the wall. to see if the stories those hushed whispers and ghost stories hold any merit.

their guide certainly seems to think so.

preparation for their venture is a day long affair. In addition to food and water, they are given protective gear – “catch it early enough, and maybe they can save you, but best not to push it” – and a run down on several of the more basic abjuration spells.

they are then lead out of the city, through the bright wall and into the outer city. they are then lead down, past even that, into a nearby wooded area that reminds him a little too much of that earlier dream, even without the tar-colored corpses and eerie quiet. )

Look, ( a soft murmur, pointing toward some of the nearby trees. rather than a lush, healthy green they are yellowing at the edges. )

( anything else goes here? kylo's also signed up for the gardening with class mission, in the hope of learning something about aefenglom's local flora, so feel free to join him as he tries to make heads or tails of the language of flowers and flower arranging. otherwise, i'm open to anything, and you can reach me either via pm or at [plurk.com profile] resurrectionist. )

Nothing's perfect.

[ And if they have at least the chance of giving or receiving assistance with an imperfect tool, they have to try, right? ]

I definitely didn't say Tactical Flower Meanings on the roster, but maybe they just haven't brought it up yet. [ She doesn't sound too convinced, though. ] Still- learning about what's edible and what's toxic is pretty useful, too.
lonewanderer: (☀ grin.)

Survival? Common sense? [ She flashes him a teasing grin before leaning back in her seat, growing a bit more serious. ]

It's a new world, full of things we don't understand. A foundation on the usual of this place needs to be built, and then...

[ Lex glances, just once, toward the distant wall separating them from the Wilde. ]

Then we make sure the unusual doesn't kill us.

[ A pause, and then, with a gesture at one of the flowers, ] Though the number of flowers that mean some different form of 'love' if you look at them from a certain angle might kill me first.

[ She nods. ]

I have some medical training and enough combat training, and since those were two of the skills they were looking for, I tagged along. Dogmeat came with, entertained some kids.

[ Getting out of the city, even into a potentially dangerous situation, was far more appealing than staying inside of it. Even if they're potentially just more bodies between the native people and the Cwylde, it was still something to take advantage of. ]

This infestation of theirs is curable, if they catch it quickly. Whether they can do it in plants, I don't know, but in people it is.

It won't matter if they can't cure it in plants, [ Lex continues, gesturing at the flowers around them. ] Eventually it'll spread to everything edible. We'll breathe it in. I understand focusing on curing people, but the wall isn't going to keep everything out.

[ It doesn't keep out air. Besides, there are farms outside - farms that, if they fall, will mean a distinct lack of food. ]

We're on borrowed time, whether everyone knows it or not. People are going to have to take risks.

And not fully screening anyone who goes out into the Wilde. How many have come back infected and either didn't know or didn't say?

[ Quarantine zones, staging areas... they could all be set up. Treatment locations just outside the wall, though she knows it could ruffle some feathers, seemed appropriate; while there would almost certainly be complaints, at least no one would literally explode in the city itself. The Coven and Parliament could surely work together to make sure there were resources outside the city itself - maybe even another barrier. ]

Parliament closed down all of the theaters because a Witch freaked out on stage and started a fire, but they treat the Cwyld within the city. I don't get it.
lonewanderer: (☢ speak up.)

[personal profile] lonewanderer 2019-07-01 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
They said it was a man called Wizard Jenkins. It happened six years ago.

[ So at least the local talk isn't too recent. ]

Parliament closed down all the theatres, plus there was however the Coven punished him; sounds like no one's heard from the guy since. Not around the Entertainment District, anyway.
lonewanderer: (✫ busy.)

[personal profile] lonewanderer 2019-07-02 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
[ It's a stupid name, but Lex has, honestly, heard stupider. ]

No. Just that he has some sort of meltdown on stage. Could be a lot of things - stress, high emotion from the play, his girlfriend making out with someone else in the audience...

[ As far as she knows, the only person who would know for sure is the missing Wizard Jenkins. Well, 'missing' - she hasn't checked if it's official. ]
lonewanderer: (☢ let me see.)

[personal profile] lonewanderer 2019-07-25 03:17 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I'm not sure. They didn't mention it- and I guess I didn't think to ask.

[ The idea had all been so new. With as hard as Bonds were preached, it seems like the lack of one resulting in a disaster would have been spoken about more. It makes her think maybe he had one, and maybe that wasn't the problem. Not this time. ]

They just said it was a meltdown.
