Where: The Little Melody music hall, side room.
What: Steven has organized a speed dating event for witches and monsters to meet each other. This log is closed to helpers and people who have signed up on the OOC event post.
Warnings: Good clean fun. Hopefully.


Finally, the day arrives. Steven will have contacted everyone coming by watch in advance, giving them the venue information and confirming their arrival. It turns out that he has arranged for a side room in the Little Melody music hall to be used for this event - he's made a positive enough impression with some of them that he managed to get it without charge, in exchange for doing chores around the hall. It's a somewhat ornate music room with a piano, chairs along the walls, 10 tables set up for dates, and one larger table set up with a potluck 'buffet' or sorts.

The offerings definitely include at least one quiche and one pie, provided by Papyrus, complete with a little note card thanking him and a description of what each food is. Papyrus's pies are actually pretty okay, even if the crust is a little crispy in places. Alongside that is water, a couple types of juice, and four trays of sandwiches: ham with cheese, chicken salad, egg salad, and veggie. Beyond that, Steven will display anything people bring with them, and write up little note cards to go along with the others.

Each table is set up with a lit candle and a sheet with a series of 'Icebreaking Questions', which read as follows:

1) What would you take with you to a desert island?
2) If you had to be someone else for a day, who would you be and why?
3) If you could invite anyone, dead or alive, to dinner, who would it be?
4) If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?
5) What would be your ideal holiday destination?
6) What's the most reckless thing you've ever done?
7) What makes you laugh?
8) Do you have a party trick?
9) If you could be granted three wishes, what would they be?
10) What time in history would you have liked to be born in and why?
11) What is the most adventurous thing you have ever done?
12) What would be the title of your biography?
13) What is your favourite restaurant meal?
14) If you were given 1,000,000 cunes what would you spend it on?

Of course, using these questions is optional. Each date will last FIVE MINUTES, during which Steven and Elliot will be playing music to accompany on piano and violin. Towards the end of the five minute period, they will ramp up the tempo a bit to indicate that you are almost done, and then stop to tell people to change tables. During the whole proceeding, Steven will be projecting a sort of ambient illusion over the room, making the roof look like twinkling stars and leaving impossible to touch sparkles in the air.

OOCLY, I have made top levels below for every participating character, indicating who they have been randomly selected to tag. ICly, all witches will presumably have the chance to talk to all monsters, but since it isn't realistic to expect everyone to do 10 threads, we are starting with two tag outs. Beyond that, you can tag out to any additional people that you like. Find you character's name down below, see who you are assigned to tag (and who you have been tagged by!) and start a thread as soon as you are able. I understand that life happens and not all of these threads will happen, but it would be really cool if they could! I recommend keeping tags short and light to ease the load - and also because that seems suited to Speed Dating, anyway.

After the dating session is over, you can also make general mingle threads of people hanging out afterwards. The dating will only take about an hour, and Steven has the venue booked until 11PM.

NOTE: When you have an idea how your threads are going, please fill out the Google Form to submit your character's grades for each date. This is mostly just so you can have the fun of seeing who would formally approve of and reject your character.

[Oh my god. Oh my god, it's a hot cat boy. Jeremy Heere is rioting the next universe over for all those times Rich joked about him being a furry. Rich tries to play it cool, offering a cool wave as he approaches the table.]

Hey, Konoe? I'm Rich Goranski. Looks like you're my next match.

[In spite of his best intentions, Konoe still gets a little nervous when approaching someone he doesn't know. He's never been all that sociable, and even if he gets along with most people pretty well when he bothers to try, this speed dating is sure a lot of people-ing. He feels like a fish out of water... or a cat in water.

His ears are turned aside a little, tail flicking nervously, as he approaches the table. Rich seems nice enough. It's just that Konoe doesn't know how to handle these situations.]

Right... [That's definitely not good enough! He takes a deep breath and tries to Act Cool.] Let's sit.

[Rich has decided to leave nerves completely by the wayside. Easier to not give a fuck and try to enjoy himself, rather than ruin his chances by fussing and acting like an idiot.

He sits with a warm smile, offering his hand.]

How long have you been here?

[Konoe gives Rich' hand a firm shake, and somehow surviving that initial contact without the earth opening up to swallow him puts him more at ease.]

Three months... round and about. I was with the first group of mirrorbound.

[He doesn't really like that word, for some reason - it makes him feel trapped here, and/or like the locals want nothing more but to kick them back through the mirrors - but it's not like he has a better one.]

Oh, geez... I can't imagine being here that long. I just got here... what, a week ago? It's kind of crazy. I don't exactly fit in at home... but it's kind of more obvious here.

[And apparently, he'll stick out even more, if he turns out to be a monster. Not that he's dwelling on that or anything...]

You don't fit in?

[It's probably rude to ask about that, but Konoe doesn't mean anything bad by the question. He's just genuinely curious as to why Rich would say such a thing, especially because Konoe doesn't see what about him might be strange enough to make him some kind of outcast.]

[firewalled]

Well, not exactly. I mean, I've got friends, but I'm... I mean, I thought it was obvious I was kind of quirky. At least back home, people knew about the burns and kind of got over it? Here it's... y'know.

[He wants to ask if Konoe gets the same with his cat ears, but he doesn't want to be rude.]

[catasstrophy]

[Still new to the concept of humans in general, there's not a whole lot that Konoe would consider quirky, or even notable. Humans don't have tails, and their ears are weird and naked. Compared to that, not much else is remotely strange.]

... It's just some burns. As long as they don't hurt anymore, it's fine.

[firewalled]

Eh, just some burns, but you'd be surprised what people can't handle. I look different, so I am different, you know? I mean, you probably would have gotten the same about your ears and tail.

[He falters then and quickly back tracks.]

I mean, I think they look hella rad!

That's true...

[He does, indeed, get the same about his ears and tail from time to time. In a way that may be different, since he was born with them, but at the same time, the results are similar enough. He can agree with Rich, there.

The backtracking confuses Konoe, mostly because him having ears and a tail will never be an insult, so he doesn't get why backtracking would be necessary. The enthusiasm that follows is a little hard to handle, but only for a different reason: his tail has a crooked tip, and he hates that. It's kind of hard to not be extremely conscious of that suddenly, when he's being complimented.]

... Not really. They're just normal.

[firewalled]

I mean, I guess... maybe I'm just drawing attention to them in the same way. They're different to me, so I think they look cool. But I guess maybe where you're from, it's just what everyone has.

[God, he's stupid. It's not like he goes around complimenting people's ability to breathe or something. This is probably the same sort of thing.]

[It's not the same sort of thing at all, but sadly Konoe is terrible at accepting compliments at the best of times, and his tail in particular is a weak point, in more ways than one. Part of him just wants to move on to another topic; part of him is frustrated that he feels that way, because running away from the topic only makes it more obvious that he thinks there's something to run away from. He doesn't want to admit his own weakness that way. It would be better to own his shortcomings.

So that's what he tries, rather weakly: he takes a breath and steadies his expression into something stern, as if that will somehow show how much he doesn't care. His voice, too, is a deliberate supposedly-bored-with-a-side-of-"duh!" that's meant to signal how none of this is getting to him at all.]

... Most cats have better ones.

Hey there! [ Entrapta perches on the chair across from Konoe with her knees pulled up to her chest, one pair of arms folded over her knees and her chin resting on one of her other pair of hands. She dives right in, without checking the question sheet but clearly quoting: ] What, would be your ideal holiday destination?

[That sure is a lot of hands... Still, not the weirdest Konoe has ever seen.

He's a little surprised that she dives right into things, but honestly? He appreciates it. It cuts back on pointless nerves. (He's going to make Yako pay for forcing him to sign up for this! (... No, he's not. It's only himself he blames, really.))]

I guess... somewhere with nice forests? And not too much rain.

[The concept of vacation is a weird one to him, but this much, he can confidently say. He looks her over again, not meaning to stare, but trying to feel a little more grounded in the conversation somehow.]

Hmmmm..! Somewhere with lots of new things to discover – so like here! Except I'd be able to go home afterwards, hahahaha...

[ She clasps her hands together brightly, dismissing that uncomfortable thought. ]

[It is an uncomfortable thought. Konoe is not unhappy with his life here, but the fact that he doesn't think he'll ever be able to go back is still a painful one, even though it long since stopped being something that occupies his every thought. He just misses some people - but that, in itself, remains an oddly shocking realization.

Not something to discuss at a time like this, though. Glancing at the questions, he reads one out loud, a little bit slow and stilted about it: he's gotten a lot more practice with reading in Aefenglom, but he's still not the most practiced, and reading out loud makes him want to pay attention to Doing It Right.]

If you were given 1,000,000 cunes, what would you spend it on?

Oh, that one's easy! I need so many more supplies for my research than I can afford, I'd definitely spend it all on that.

[ A pause. ]

And maybe on snacks.

Research?

[That's not something he's familiar with - in any field. But that just makes him more curious as to what Entrapta does and why.

Wanting snacks, at least, is easy to relate to. His question this time comes out more naturally, his tail lightly swinging behind him in excitement.]

What kind of snacks do you like?

Oh, pretty much anything as long as it's tiny. Being real little [ she indicates the size with a finger and thumb ] just makes food better to eat.

[ She pauses a moment, and then, as if this has just occurred to her: ] Oh! I should ask what kind of snacks you like, too, right?

If you bite it off, any food becomes tiny, right?

[He's not disagreeing as such, but he's pretty confused-math-lady about that statement. Bigger isn't necessarily better, but neither is tiny, surely?]

... Fruit. I like fruit.

Sure, but I don't like to bite into big things, you know? It's just uncomfortable. Oh, fruit is great, though! I like grapes best.

[Of course she'd go with grapes.]

[He's mocking her a little, but not maliciously, smiling as his tail swings happily behind him.]

[ If she notices the teasing, she doesn't seem to mind. ] Well, yeah! And I like the colour. They're just cute, y'know? Food is the best when it's cute.

[He's never really considered cuteness a factor, but that in itself is a good reason why he can't argue with her, right? A little awkwardly, he tries to explain his point of view... or at least his reasons for it.]
