( he know kaoru is needling him with his questions, and he knows it's because he's so annoyingly opaque— a common complaint even rei in his (falsely) advanced age isn't deaf to. still, despite the gravity of the topic—their spiriting away to another world; the transformation of some to monsters—rei's attitude retains a relative levity, pleased just to have a conversation with kaoru, who's almost always in the middle of going and very rarely stays.

kaoru isn't wrong. the change he's concerned with is the tangible, literal change, and rei answered in regards to metaphorical change. worse yet, rei's authority means very little outside the school itself, even back in japan— never mind this strange and grand world. but still, but still, he has to do something; for a corpse, he's very bad at staying still. )

"my" fearless leader... kaoru Also meant nothing by that, but it makes rei happy to be just a little bit more included... ) To begin with, don't you think it would be by far easier for us to rely on one another if we remain in close proximity? Considering we've been left to choose our bedmates for ourselves, I believe this is quite the auspicious opportunity ♪

Kaoru being Kaoru though, something about the suggestion is... visibly bothering him. He's definitely in a better mood than usual, but maybe going from zero to a hundred that quick is too much for his fragile little hetero-flexible heart. ]

I don't like that word. What was it.... uhm, bed-mates? Could you not say something so alarming without giving me a warning first, at least? [ An irrational request. ] ... though if it comes down to you not being able to find somewhere to stay, then I guess I wouldn't mind? Mostly. It's better than leaving you out in the cold, crying... I'm obviously not that heartless.

[ What's more comforting is the fact that he has a voice, a say in what's going on, because it's not all that uncommon for Rei to spring an unfortunate surprise on him out of nowhere. Right. The decision's all his right now, even it's just a mirror image of a familiar routine in the end, of being shadowed and coddled by someone who's barely any older. He pauses for a second to study the way Rei glows with the recognition, and also to wonder, not for the first time, what's expected of him even now, of someone so seemingly irresponsible that no one ever thinks he's looking at the big picture ( no one except rei, that is, and why? ). He sighs. ]

Well... anyway, it's true that it's better to depend on someone you know when times are rough~. Just don't get too comfortable, okay?

though he'd been somewhat unhappy about this whole situation on behalf of his unitmates and brother, he'd come to relax considerably since entering the bath, and his mood only improves when kaoru offers him easy acquiescence. kaoru, despite his verbal rejections, was not stout nor stubborn. he was a good child, and his habit of wandering did not make him any less. )

Should I not? We will, after all, be resting beside one another, brother to brother, skin to skin with one roof over our head. It's a little bit like a stay-over, so I'm quite looking forward to the opportunity. Kaoru-kun is quite kind when he lets his heart show, and he truly makes this old man proud ♪

( it's clear he's entirely ignoring kaoru's "if you don't have anywhere else to stay clause" and simply taking this as a yes.

he leans over...! to pet his head! most people would just be normal and say thanks, maybe say something less opaque and more nice, but not rei, who's bad at that kind of straightforward expression. )

The phrase hangs around his shoulders like a blanket, always a memory and reminder of how it used to make his heart leap and rise and almost bloom into a golden hundredfold — a soothing sort of mantra he figured would leave him eventually like the white does on a wave when it breaks into sea spray. It just keeps on coming back though, through people who aren't family, through people who see more in him than he'll ever see.

What do they know that he doesn't?

Well. He's not going to admit that it's nice to hear, because for starters, it's Rei of all people. And so he's just going to calmly... remove his hand this time, because... hello? He's still half-naked. Read the atmosphere a little. ]

You can quit treating me like a kid any day now. [ Also he's used to Rei conveniently ignoring things he says!! You're not senile, okay!!! ] As for the rest of what you said... if you do anything funny while we're splitting a room then it's grounds for me to cut the room-share deal, okay?
