[ eren remembers how much it can burst into flame, if the dream is as acute as he thinks. ]

I haven’t had any of that.

[ beyond hanging around the infirmary until they checked him so many times they had to say he was clear. no curse, no magic. no nothing. although— ]

Mhairi said I’d fall under monster, though. They can’t use magic. [ not because of the dream! ] I just don’t . . . Turn into dragons.

[ that’d just be weird. ]

I guess not everybody has it? They said I'd be a witch, like Miss Nessie, but I never had magic before, so I don't know why I do now. [Magic isn't real. He has a passing belief in the Norse pantheon, and of course gods would have powers if they were tangible and visible, but this... this is insane.]

Monster. Jeez. I guess they're just called that, but it seems- you know, really negative. [It's not exactly a positive word, and he hates to see it applied to perfectly nice people, even if they look... different.]

Maybe- Maybe turning into a dragon in the dream was just a metaphor? For something else you can do now. Not that I'd know what, but it seems more plausible, right?

[ oh, boy, tell him about it. but quietly, eren adds, in relation to the name. ]

I know. [ there’s a small, appreciative smile that wanes at the end. ] It’s perspective.

[ it was just . . . a word for them here, not in the negative sense. the bad was where the treatment came in, but it’s going to be different for everyone that comes in, right?

he gives that last bit of thought and isn’t sure which side he should lean to. until he actually knows if his powers are gone, he sticks to what’s true. ]

Yeah, I guess the context is what really counts. [Not that he likes it any better. Still, he guesses maybe it's just like his people still calling dragons things like Monstrous Nightmares and Terrible Terrors. Things just come to be known by certain words.]

Anything we had? You had some kind of- of power before showing up here?

[ eren isn’t one to go off and tell everyone at home, not that people didn’t already know, but. he gives hiccup a once over, then brings his attention over to the black dragon still having a blast.

Have you ever heard of titans? [ pause. he remembers how mhairi named them. ] —Giants?

Uh, giants? [He has to think about that for a moment, all the way back to the scary stories of his childhood - giants and trolls that steal your socks, and all manner of things that Norse parents tell their offspring about to keep them from running off.] Just in, you know, bedtime stories. Giants and trolls. I used to run off looking for them as a kid, when my dad would take me fishing.

They’re real, where I’m from. Anywhere from ten to sixty meters. Some people can turn into them.

[His eyes widen a little.] Wait, they- How big? And...

Wait. Are you... Do you usually turn into a giant?

[usurpers]

Usually.

[ he almost wishes he could laugh— but it hardly feels like a laughing matter. titans were . . . complicated. ]

Twice the size of- [He's been on those walls, looking down. It's hard to imagine something that size - other than a Red Death, or a Bewilderbeast. A leviathan-class dragon.] How-... But you can't do that here? I'd heard that- people's powers, if they had them, disappear when they come through the mirror...

I’m going to find out.

[ just . . . . not now. something about seeing a fifteen meter giant just exploding out of thin air is going to definitely create alarm. ]

[ there’s humor tied here, but. gravity, as well. he certainly hopes he hasn’t lost anything. ]
