[ Pumpkin seems to have a better beat on Toothless's shift in demeanor than Peridot does, letting out a soft, nervous whine as his pupils narrow and his weight shifts. As for the gem herself, her lips scrunch into the tiniest frown, pondering what such a reaction could mean just before Hiccup blessedly steps in and intervenes. ]

Nyeh..? Oh. Um... Alright...

[ She's not really sure she follows Hiccup's logic, or why this dragon needs to... Accept her for...? But, she does as he instructs, straightening up and holding her hand out in the same manner. ]

Staring into a dragon's eyes too intently can be seen as a challenge. Toothless- back home, he's, uh. He's the alpha. The king of dragons. He faced down a Bewilderbeast and won, you don't want to challenge him. [With Hiccup here, there isn't a lot of overt danger, but he never knows what could happen in a strange place like this, dealing with strange - not even human! - people. It is vital for the remainder of their stay here that nothing disastrous happen in the city.

Toothless is uncertain, his posture tensed, but he hasn't started to growl.] There, yeah, like that.

[After a moment, Toothless relaxes, taking a step or two forward to bump his nose into Peridot's hand, after a nod from Hiccup that they're safe.]

Wait. What's a Bewilder--

[ That question and the many others that Peridot has lined up to ask all go instantly out the window the moment Toothless nose-boops her open palm. Confused as she was as to why she needed this dragon's acceptance, it gives her a pretty strong case of the warm fuzzies to have apparently earned it. Her eyes are sparkling with awe. She has been approved by an IMPORTANT DRAGON. She is so honored, she has no words. ]

[Hiccup beams, a little proud (even if he knows part of this was due to his own influence on his best friend). He knows how it feels, though, to be accepted by a creature so dangerous and wondrous.] Just like that. See? Dragons are incredible, if you show them respect first, they'll show you loyalty in return.

[ Peridot pulls her hand back whenever Toothless stops touching it with his nose, drawing them back up to her chest, still boggling at the creature in awe. She glances at Hiccup quizzically. ]

So there are a lot of these 'dragons' where you come from, then?

[Toothless sits back on his haunches, gazing at her curiously, head tilting to the side. Hiccup laughs a little.]

Oh, yeah. Thousands. But only one Toothless. He's pretty unique.
