[ the red string of fate. ah, he's seen this trope so many times, anime loves it. so when a thin scarlet thread appears around tendou's clawed pinky, it is time. time, that is, to endulge in the city's festivities and follow where fate will lead him.

even if he was right in the middle of a confectioner's groceries and up to his neck in brown paper bags and sweet, sweet additions. ]

[Mikasa was for once. Not working. Instead she was window shopping, just looking at a shop window, not going in yet. It was probably a strange shop for both of them. Her because of the luxury of it, him because...

In the window was an array of toys. Very, very old toys. Little wooden puppets, building blocks in different colours, wooden animals. Mikasa had seen most of the things before, but not in such a large group. She wasn't sure where to begin, nor was she sure if she could afford so much for the orphanage children. There was other, more important expenses...

The small tug on her hand gets a little grunt. Then she's looking.

[ a yank that nearly costs tendou an accident. his hand gets pulled off its grip on a sack of flour, and the chimera jolts to keep it from falling. he brings his knee up to hold it and smacks his face on its top with the other.

the only thing over his head are his swiveling hyena ears and a mushroom cloud of white. ]

[When the string tenses and she feels a weight on the other end she pauses her tugging. It hadn't snapped, and while there'd been some give whatever was attached didn't move by much with her light pull.

So she follows it along, turning a corner. Looking at the...Oh.]

...Tendou? [Quieter, less sure than normal.

And he might notice the slight wall that was up over the bond. Along with some unease...Unease that hadn't been there until she'd realised who was on the other end of the string. Those new wings of her give a little stretch, fanning out before sliding shut again. Puffing herself up, defensive...]

[ getting himself back to an adjusted posture (just with his face all white with a flour punch), tendou moves his bags in his arms and looks up from a . . . hm. uncertainty. uncertainty that was not his nor there before. a feeling that makes his feathers puff up a little. ah, if he had his free hand, he'd smooth his crest down . . .

but, he'll try to act his way: natural and tendou, and responding with energetic joy. ]

[Tendou...what were these words? But she doesn't ask, doesn't move, or say anything at all for a moment. Instead, she just stared, stared with those big black eyes.

Mouth opening--

Then suddenly turning her head and ducking. Red seeping into her ears as she made a small muffled noise. Shoulders hunching together. Just...Just give her a moment.

Taking a breath. Three simple words. That was all it was, right?]

--are we?

[Murmured that quickly that the two words mush together, the first not even loud enough to be heard.]

[ —he has never seen mikasa get red like that, and carefully pokes his beak out of his mouth to press into his lower lip, much like biting on it. was that because of the french? the power . . . ]

Are we—? [ his pinky wiggles out, not. understanding. ] Tied?

[It was not the french...she had no idea what it was. Giving him another mumble. Then a huff, and then a whisper.]

-A couple?

[Meep-! Nope! still not looking. Time to die.]

[ oh. ah. HM. hm. no amount of foresight would've prepared tendou for this, counting he's never had a girlfriend and never expected to even if he was bonded to mikasa, an all out babe that could break him in two. hyena instincts have always made sure that he played the role of submissive subordinate under her reign and wouldn't be much else beyond a good friend! in a place where people come and go . . . was it possible?

he's as red as his hair, and his feathers puff out so much he looks like a neatly popped popcorn. ]

Are we? I mean— Did you-?

[ "want that?" his tongue is all tied and clicks right back into his beak. ]

[Well this sure was interesting feedback along the bond. Awkward shifting and unsure all around. Had she ever seen Tendou turn red like that before? No she hadn't. The unease grows...Remembering what her new witch bonded had said and her own response. 'no matter how negative' and how sure she'd been that it wouldn't be. That no matter what Tendou could just shrug it off and answer.

...But he'd stuttered and stayed quiet for once.]

Uh...[It's drawn out, unable to meet his gaze at all. Did she? She wasn't sure herself to some degree. It'd been a reoccuring issue, she'd liked Eren for so long that she wasn't sure what it meant to like someone else. Was the enjoyment she felt hanging out and spending time with Tendou just close friends or more?

...She couldn't tell. So she takes a breath, shoulders squaring, lifting her head high even if she was still just looking out into the distance. That wall the other side of the street was getting an intense stare. Her mouth opening, closing, exhale.]

I... like spending time with you.
