Well, not all plants need gentle touches.

[Floating down, she lands kneeling on the ground next to him. Now that she's aware of who this is, she's a lot calmer. She's not used to him but he's Sylvain's friend. So that makes good. Somehow. Yeah.

Okay, honestly it's just that he's baby Dimitri.]

I've taken care of plants where you really have to wrestle with them!

[Dimitri tries to imagine the meek girl wrestling with... a giant pitcher plant, perhaps? It's rather harrowing. One wrong move, and she could be its lunch or snap the vine that keeps it alive.]

That sounds unlike anything I've ever heard.

Please, go on. [Now he's hoping for a botanist war story.]

Um, well some plants have really tough roots or branches. Or vines! They can be really hard to manage so you have to use some strength to break off unhealthy pieces or to twist them into place.

[She uses hand gestures to try to demonstrate.]

It's not usually that way with mushrooms though. But they are really resilient! If you don't get all the way down to the roots then even if you break them off they can keep growing in the dirt. Their roots continuing to reach and drink up the nutrients in the soil.

[She can get so very talkative when it's about a subject she really loves. Much like this one.]

[The thought of breaking pieces off of a plant should be alarming - should be doubtlessly harmful to the organism - but Bernadetta speaks as if it's a necessary thing. As if forcing the growth to follow a certain path can be the difference between life and death for it.

He thinks of Dedue, gentle in the most important of ways, measuring his strength just so in order to guide a plant to flourish.

The longer Bernadetta speaks, the more easily Dimitri's smile settles onto his face. He's not sure he's heard so many words out of her in total as he's hearing now. It's pleasant.] That's rather impressive.

I assume there's as wide a biological variance in mushrooms as there is in greenery. Are there mushrooms that are good to keep as house plants? [Hard to kill is exactly what Dimitri needs in a plant.]

I'm not sure about that because they usually need lots of shade and water. But there are more dry weather plants. They don't need as much care, just some water now and then.

[She touches her cheek while she considers it. Maybe something like a succulent? That could work. And they come in a lot of really pretty colors that she thinks he might like. They don't just have to be green.

That could make him really happy.]

They can also be really pretty.

A dry plant?

[That sounds like a contradiction, but there is life in the desert - Dimitri just can't imagine that such a thing would survive when removed from its natural habitat. Also, aren't cacti huge??

Maybe ideating on a plant to keep for himself was foolish. He'd surely kill anything thrust into his care.] Do you have a favorite of them?

[Despite his newly founded reluctance to adopt something of his own, Dimitri presses on. Intent on hearing more of Bernadetta's passion.]

Of plants? Yes. But they aren't really desert plants. Unless you meant one of them?

[She hopes she didn't misunderstand.

Oh no. What if she did?

Don't mind her praying she hasn't messed up this whole interaction somehow.]

[Dimitri notices Bernadetta's enthusiasm stutter immediately. There's always something fervent in her manner of speaking - and now it's taken on its more familiar context. He stares, unsure of how to gently approach the situation only for a moment.

He keeps his smile, suddenly aware of it but willing that it retain its warmth.]

I should like to hear both. Your favorite desert plant, and those you care for the most.

We have time, don't we?

[That really helps her settle again. She relaxes and smiles as she looks at the plants.]

I love pitcher plants the most. But I think that succulents are really pretty. They live by absorbing the water from the air around them. So you can just watch them live as they exist in the world.

[Dimitri tracks the way muscles tense and relax in others regularly - a habit suited for fighting as much as politics. He sees Bernadetta ease and is thankful he's managed to say the right thing.

Succulents absorb air, you say? So they don't require any watering?

Surely they need some tending... [There cannot exist out there a plant that Dimitri won't accidentally kill - he doesn't believe it.]

I guess you can spray them with a little water. It shouldn't be hard to find a sort of mister. But you don't really need to tend to them. They just look pretty for you.

And they will grow?

[Ornamental these strange plants may be, he doesn't enjoy the idea of stunting something simply because it is convenient.

Though, interior decor in Faerghus is rather scant. He appreciates how a room looks with life scattered about only because of what Dedue has showed him, and how the man made his own spaces so welcoming.

Dimitri can't imagine his own accommodations being anything more than swords mounted on stone.]

A little? Usually they reach a point where they stop growing. So you could always have fully mature ones. That way you can just spray some water on them and that's it.

[That seems a good solution to her! She's not sure what's so confusing about that really. Maybe she should just get him one so that way he can see?

Maybe that's the best idea.]
