Everyone probably has their own reasons for being at the lake. For Lan Xichen, working in the forge tends to lead to overheating (especially when he's been fighting off certain stress levels) and the nearby water provides a good way to politely cool off. Maybe you met him on his way and decided to join in or maybe you were already there. After several days this becomes a regular pattern of work followed by an afternoon soak, so it's possibly just a nice diversion when things are a bit too much to handle.

Whether it is swimming, meditating, having a snack, or just enjoying the fresh air along the bank, there are plenty of ways to share time with friends. The only possible warning will come from Lan Xichen himself if it looks like an argument is brewing--he will intervene. He came explicitly for some quiet time, so if anyone starts a fight, they'll probably have a half-naked Lan there to break them up. Maybe that's your thing.

[surely he knows what a talisman is. most of them are single-use, but if they can figure the rest out, surely they can find a solution to that too. which is how the self-heating time-delayed exploding pot ends up being invented.]

Maybe, but they sound more fun. [more dangerous too, or maybe those two things have a similar meaning to him sometimes.] Might be a problem in the wrong hands. What were you making them for?

[ That's certainly a thought, though even as a nominal witch Percy has no idea how to create them. Something that can be looked into, at any rate. It might even be useful in other situations.

As for the rest, one side of his mouth tips up slightly. ]

Curiosity, mainly. The ones I've made before have all required an external ignition, which can have a tendency to go a bit wrong. [ Accidentally exploding your own friends does tend to be a bit frowned upon. ] Not something I was intending to give to anyone else.

[curiousity is a perfectly valid reason to do anything. why do things that have always been done when you can do something that no one's done?? (sometimes there's a reason why no one's done it. "exploding friends" is a good example.)]

Now I'm curious too. Can I watch you test one once you have it mastered? I'll bring the drinks to celebrate with! And I promise I won't touch anything. Lan Zhan would be pretty upset if I got anything blown off this close to the wedding.

Certainly, if you like. Once I get the basic structure down, it shouldn't take more than a few hours to put something together.

[ He does give a bit of a dry look over the tops of his glasses, though. Close calls or not, Percy hasn't taken any parts off of anyone that he hadn't fully intended to. ]
