Who: Diarmuid Ua Duibhne, Waver Velvet, Justine (will edit as necessary) When: Throughout June Where: The Coven, the Haven, etc What: A June catch-all log! Moving in, magic practice goes Wrong and other shenanigans. Warnings: n/a
[That's just the thing, Justine: he's not entirely sure what was so different about this seal that it would suddenly work so well. Which, by extension, means that he doesn't know how to break it either. Admitting as much out loud, though, would only embarrass him and worry her so, instead, he covers up his apprehension with a small, apologetic smile.]
I... think I underestimated the potency of this spell. [And, it seems, his ability to perform it.] I was studying magical barriers and the like but...
[He glances down at the paper in his hand- only to find that it's already burning away in a heatless, magical flame, its powers spent. Wonderful. Now he has to work out which one he even used. Irritated, he clicks his tongue as he brushes the ashes from his hands.]
I'm sorry, I really hadn't planned on testing it on you. You haven't been working on dispelling magics by any chance, have you?
[A light spark of light fizzled between Justine's palm and the shimmering shield that kept them trapped in the room. As far as she is aware, this is the only way in and out of this particular room. If they want to leave then they have to find a way to lower the shield.
She glances over at Lancer, her dark eyes betraying her uncertainty.]
You think? [Her voice falters before she's able to control the sudden spike of panic.] I have not. I've been working on runes lately. I might be able to modify something I've been working on but I'd have to carve it around the door.
You don't have a blade on you by chance?
[She has a pencil but that might take a fair bit of time.]
[The barrier holds firm but, while it reacts to Justine's touch with an impressive flair of light, it won't feel like much more than a warm prickle. Strong as it is, it clearly has no real offensive mechanisms in place and won't react with any hostility to attempts to break it.]
Ah, maybe hold off on that for now. [With a light, embarrassed little laugh, Diarmuid rubs the back of his neck.] I don't want to deface the building if we can help it.
[The last thing he wants is to have physical evidence of this whole mess that he has to try and explain to an elder witch. After one last once over of his - unfortunately highly competent- handiwork, he steps back and turns his attention first to his desk where the books he was studying are still lying open, and then the bookshelves all around them.
Truth be told, they couldn't have been trapped in a more useful room.]
There must be something here that can help us. We're in a library, after all. Perhaps we should think of this as... a test.
[Panic momentarily prickles at the back of Justine's neck. They're trapped. Trapped. It isn't hopeless and another witch could stumble across them and break it in time but she can't help but feeling confined and enclosed. She takes a deep breath and then another, making it look as if she's studying the barrier before turning back towards Lancer.]
That's true.
I suppose that would be a better first action and someone might find us here too. [Justine walks over to the table and places down the things she'd been carrying.]
Should we look at shields or general disarming spells. [She pauses thoughtfully.] Or maybe it'd be best to split our attention? There are many ways to dispel something. Between unraveling it or nullifying the magic itself.
[For a moment there, he thought she was just going to go ahead and start carving runes into the doorway- but she doesns't. Instead, the panic in her eyes fades and is replaced with resolve. Though he doesn't comment on it, Justine might notice that his smile takes on an almost brotherly kind of pride: Good job. You're doing well.]
I'll take nullification magics. It's what I was working on before and I have a good amount of experience with it from home too.
[The trouble is that, in order to disassemble the spell, he has to work out exactly what he was he cast. The evidence has burned away and he has only the rough first attempts of a handful of different spells in his notebook to work with; the barrier must be in there somewhere but it could take a little time to figure out where.]
I'm sure both of us have gotten out of worse scrapes than this.
I will see if I can unraveling it. [Justine struggles with the panic and the voices that rant freely through her thoughts but it's easier with something to focus on. This spell is going to have to be her focus.] What spell was it? Was it on that paper?
[They both need to know what the spell is to get rid of it.]
I think that's step one. What book were you reading?
