QUESTS - TALK TRAVELS, THORNS A-PLENTY
1. talk travels
[DELIVERING MAIL? no problem, tori can Absolutely handle that, part-time jobs are Nothing--
that said, it's pretty hard to actually tote these things around, letters bound by twine and packages bulging out of the sack slung across his small form, so for the first half tori's just kind of physically Dying trying to be a lot stronger than he is... help him out?
after a time, he'll actually accept the bike they offer, which, for the purpose of comedy since they did have normal looking ones in victorian england too, is a penny-farthing. it looks like it'll make tori Tall, which is Awesome, but
it's not exactly conducive for heavy mail order. plus, tori's never ridden a bike before, so past the initial lessons they give him he's on his own -- and it's not great!!!]
G-Get out of the way, idiot!
[this is gonna be far too common.]
2. thorns a-plenty (consequences)
[it'd been a simple quest. just get some roses from the briar patch to the west, and tori likes flowers (and rose bush) enough to help out -- besides, it's easy money!
it's easy money, but only if you don't actually get scratched up.
tori'd been instructed not to sleep, since he'd just kind of... Go... if he did, but it's hard to actually stay awake; he keeps rubbing at his arm, which is bandaged up to keep him from scratching at it as one does with irritated skin, trying to find something to do. the ideal is Not becoming sleeping beauty.]
Ugh~. Hey, you! [yes, you.] Give me... Give me something to do, or talk to me or something! The most adorable idol in all the world wants your attention, so you'd better gratefully give it!
[he says, with a sort of hazy look, cheeks flushed with fever. the teen definitely looks more like he should be laying down, not being out and about.]
FLOWERS - TIME TO MAKE SOME MONEY
[tori's been practicing flower language, and so past the classes still being offered he'd decided to see if he can make bouquets small wreathes for other people!!! he's sitting out by one of the fountains, with a variety of flowers he's picked and whatnot, referring to his notes every now and then as he lets people pass by.
when he's feeling confident, he'll call out:]
Looking for a bouquet~? Pay by the blossom, I'll masterfully create any message you want to pass on. ♪ I'm the best in my class, you should feel honored I'm offering my services like this. ♪
MAGIC - FAILURES AND EXPECTATIONS
1. practice
- ABJURATION
[he's practicing on small scraps gotten by clumsy kids at first, but there's other parts of the magic he wants to try too:
namely, the barriers thing, because that seems Useful and he wants to be Useful. the problem is, tori can't figure out the whole... like, depth perception part of this, basically... the lime green, shimmering surfaces are absolutely visible, which is great, but he can't get the placement right--
which leads to them appearing right in front of others, sorry about that. tori is doing his damnest to not seem like he's the one doing them, but it's fairly obvious that it is given his guilty expression.]
CONJURATION
[banquets of sweets have suddenly appeared before you.
they're not technically real. they have no flavor, but the texture is sort of there for some of the sweets, and there's a warmth to the tea that breaks the sea of plates, and tori sits at the head of the table looking far too proud and happy of himself... okay, so he'd only meant for a small sort of "tower" of them, but this is fine.]
Fufufu~. Like what you see? ♪ Go ahead, take what you want, I don't mind. ♪ Have some tea too, it goes well with sweets. ♪
[mostly to see if someone does join him for teatime.]
ILLUSION
[being homesick? sucks. so the kind of illusion magic tori's practicing includes people, only those a very small handful would absolutely know.
though a little off in coloring (not quite as bad as it could be, it's only his uniform), a young man sits in a conjured chair with tori's head on his lap, petting the other with a fond smile. for once, tori seems absolutely content, almost dozing off... as he quickly learns, though, magic doesn't last long for the inexperienced if they fall asleep, so he's just watching people as they pass.
it can't replace the eichi tenshouin he knows and looks up to. this one can't talk, the movements are stilted and just wrong enough that it doesn't fully get rid of his sorrow, and the same can be said of the other people he "enjoys" his time with -- once one disappears, another takes their place...
besides the blond, there's also an aqua haired boy (though both tori and hajime have been mistaken for girls, they're that cute) that tori especially seems to delight in holding the hands of and talking, even if the other doesn't speak back... there's also a butler that brushes his hair, and a tall, silver haired individual that does the most simple of magic tricks, like "endless" trains of dully colored napkins and pulling coins out of the air.
no, none of this-- really helps, but it's definitely the thing he spends most of his time and energy on in comparison to what he should be learning. watch them slowly become worse and worse, more faded or just disappearing mid-conversation, along with tori's growing frustration.]
2. exhaustion
[after all of that, though, it becomes evident why most of tori's spells begin to backfire:
he's used far too much magic, and he keeps trying to use it while his body needs the rest, day in and day out.
his illusions become disfigured, discolored, and somewhat nightmareish if they last at all; conjuration leads to a surplus of the animals he's trying to summon, so if he looks unhappy with having twenty rabbits around him, that's why; he doesn't want to try abjuration when he's unsteady, so evocation is the unique one here... it's just that the area of effect is much too large, with how much effort tori's trying to put in, so if you're rained on--
well, look no further than the trembling teen who's trying to hold it together, hands clenched into his witchy robes and apparently on his last legs.]
Why... Why can't I do anything right today..?

no subject
I'm fine. It's good that you're here, commoner... Entertain me somehow. Tell me a story or something, just don't make it the kind you tell at bedtime.
[it's the same bossy tone, but there's a real lack of the fire from their first meeting in it.]
no subject
no subject
I can't. I really, really want to, but the medics said that if I do I won't wake up for a little while. Because of the thorns I got scratched up by.
[he'll push up his sleeve to reveal the bandages wrapped tightly around them, then pulls the fabric back down to rub at it idly.]
So since losing the adorable me would be-- [a yawn.] Would be a disaster, even for a few days, I have to stay up the whole time.
[spoiler: he's definitely not gonna be able to do that. he's definitely going to end up passing out at some point, and he's going to be cross.]
no subject
[Now he's very worried about Tori, even if he is bossy.] What happened? Why were you near those thorns...? [Where are they so he can avoid them.]
no subject
[he's starting to get so irritable because of this sickness. it isn't fair but he can't easily stop it.]
I got through it, but I seriously wonder why they needed those roses in particular...
no subject
[He assumes Tori isn't in any kind of mortal danger, or else... people would probably have been more careful. But still.]
no subject
They're really pretty, so I guess they just might make a nice addition... I didn't really think to ask.
no subject
[He hopes it was used for something better than decoration.]
no subject
[... probably. tori yawns again, resting more heavily on a lamp pole nearby, and stares at paris.]
Anyway, even... a no-name like you can do something, right? Don't just stand there, help me.
no subject
Alright, um... I could... tell you a story?
no subject
... Mmhmm. That'd be nice. But-- like I said, don't make it something I could fall asleep to! Okay? That's all.
no subject
Have you ever heard of Reynard the fox?
no subject
Nu huh. Is he a real fox, or is that just what they call him?
no subject
no subject
[he does seem a little cheered by it!!! animal stories tend to be fun, and yuzuru won't tell him the raunchier myths of fox spirits.]
no subject
Mm. Well, one day, in the kingdom where Reynard lived, the king lion became very ill. He sent for Reynard and his uncle, the wolf Isengrim, to come and help find a cure for him. However, Reynard and Isengrim were always fighting, so Reynard came to the palace and hide to eavesdrop. He overheard Isengrim talking to another wolf, saying he was going to convince the king that Reynard was a traitor so that he would be executed. And actually, Reynard being so suspicious made that easy... the wolf just had to say that Reynard had ignored the summons, and the king became furious, sending soldiers to arrest him.
no subject
[tori's very much a captive audience right now, despite his apparent fatigue.]
no subject
[Hopefully Tori doesn't get too caught up in this, Reynard's kind of an anti-hero... if even that.........]
He went back home and let them arrest him, telling the king when he got there that he had missed the summons because he was praying for a cure for the king's ailment. And the cure, he said, was for the king to wrap himself in a freshly skinned wolf pelt.
[does he see where this is going]
no subject
... So they used that wolf's pelt? The one that hated Reynard-san.
[he looks conflicted; on one hand, he can agree that getting rid of one's enemies is like, smart, and especially if they were planning to do the same to you, but--]
That's dishonorable!
no subject
Well, Reynard was a trickster. I don't think he really believable in 'honor', except when it suited him.
no subject
[ugh. tori rubs his face, yawning softly.]
Okay, so, did Reynard-san get him? The wolf. I need to know how to ends too, you know.
no subject
But he'll nod, continuing the story.] Mmhm. It sounded reasonable to the king, so they took Isengrim's skin-- it didn't kill him, but it hurt him a lot and left him very weak. So he couldn't really do anything other than watch and fume as the king actually seemed to get better and Reynard got all the credit for it.
