a gift | after the holidays

[it was just a scarf, nothing fancy. red-dyed sheep wool knitted with care by some elderly woman who had a stall set up in the city market. it seemed like a good idea at the time but now ven wasn't so sure.

he has the scarf wrapped in some brown paper and twine, tucked under his arm as he walks down the street. he has a general idea of what he plans to do - find someone who knew vanitas (a friend?) and hope they would give the gift to him. seemed simple enough, but ven was still... hesitant.]

[ Vanitas is outside in plain sight. The cold doesn't necessarily bother him at the moment, but maybe that's because he is fussing with one of the other "gifts" he had been given. A spear-making kit.

He doesn't know why he's actually following through with this. Maybe just to kill some time? It's not as if he knows how to use one... ]

[when he catches sight of vanitas outside it feels like a cruel joke fate was playing on him. he hesitates to approach him at first, swaying back and forth on his feet as he tries to come to a decision.

finally he decides to walk over, tail wagging slowly behind him. hopefully vanitas will hear his footsteps in the crunching snow before ven has to say something.]

Um- hey.

[ Is fate playing a joke on Ventus? Or is fate playing around with Vanitas? He hadn't expected to see Ventus here. More like Van had thought that Ven would pester him through private channels.

He pauses and looks up. There's some slight dark circles under Van's eyes, but that's because he hasn't been sleeping well. At all. ]

Something you need?

[ven shifts awkwardly, noticing the changes under his eyes but wisely decides not to mention it. or why vanitas is outside sharpening a... spear.]

I, um- wanted to give you this.

[he says, stepping closer and holding out the wrapped package.]

[ Wise thing to do, Ventus. Vanitas, however, simply blinks. What is with people and giving him things lately. ]

...Why?

Shouldn't you ask that after you open it?

[still holding it out for him to take.]

It's just a gift. Nothing special.

I've gotten quite a few things from people the last couple of weeks. For the most part I've yet to get an explanation as to why I'm being given so much.

[ Though fine. Vanitas takes the package and opens it. Definitely not the first scarf he's gotten, but the color? Well it's likely a favorite. Or preferred, really. ]

Usually when someone gives you a gift it's because they like you. Or think you deserve one. Usually, anyways.

[he's worked very hard to keep his expectations low when vanitas sees the scarf. he could throw it away or burn it with one of those fun fire spells he loves to use, or- or laugh in his face. ven didn't know what to expect from vanitas at all right now.]

It's gotten pretty cold and it's kinda a good idea to have clothes to keep the chill away.

Usually... So this isn't a usual circumstance?

[ It isn't like he is going to throw it away. Vanitas is gong to use it because it would be a waste to do otherwise. And he doesn't like to waste things. Look, he hasn't even destroyed the wrapping paper. It's still fairly neat and intact. ]

Seems like quite a few of you people seem to be concerned about my ability to stay warm.

Would you accept a gift from me if I said it was because I thought you'd like it?

[ventus has no idea what vanitas will do which is why he prepared for... hopefully anything. maybe he should have prepared more for vanitas actually accepting it completely.]

Well with all this fur I've been pretty warm, but it's been snowing a lot here... and the last time I saw you, you weren't wearing real winter clothes at all. It's a fair assumption to make.

Well I haven't thrown away anything yet.

[ So while he doesn't know if he would have accepted it just for that reason... At least Vanitas isn't one to just toss or burn these things. Granted he meets everything with the same amount of suspicion and cynicism as before, but at least he isn't tossing something out. ]

[ventus doesn't comment on that. yet.]

Yeah, but they aren't winter clothes. If you don't keep warm you could get seriously sick.

I've never been sick in my life.

[ Coughing up Unversed doesn't quite count. ]

That doesn't mean it won't happen here. Everything is different here from back home.

[maybe he should change the subject. ven looks down at what vanitas is working on.]

[ Yeah... Vanitas isn't going to even respond to that one. Instead he will answer the other question. ]

What's it look like? It's a spear.

[he's very confused.]
