Where I'm from, there are spirits, which are like... beings that guard over a certain place, or species, or... something like that. Only spirits have magic, really, but if you bargain with them or befriend them they'll help you out. So lots of people have deals with minor fire spirits to make their ovens work, or horse or wind spirits for travel... things like that.
