It's not a funny joke, being so lame and out-dated. But it's privately funny for Geralt, too, who hates being recognizable at home - whether it's just because he's a witcher, or because he's Geralt of Rivia. If only the bard who traded on his name wasn't also one of his closest friends, he might be more bent out of shape about it.

Also: they're all supposed to be pretty covert, here. Sounds like he might not be doing the worst job after all, if someone in here hasn't seen him stumbling around punching people.
