[Open] I was a heavy heart to carry
Who: Newt Scamander(
newtralize) and You!
When: Throughout the month of August
Where: Various Locations
What: Quests, Magic, Canon Update, and a heavy dose of sad.
Warnings: Canon Update to end of CoG and will include mentions/talk of death.
I. Arwel's Favors
[One of the upside of having his niffler was for the array of items that the small creature brought back to the house to outfit the new burrow it was making for itself. Of course, a lot of these items weren't well suited for the creature's burrow and eventually abandoned. Either way, there were an assortment of items that he could drop off. Scales and baubles and bells collected from Harry, who isn't too pleased to have some of his treasures taken.
Newt leaves the establishment with the scarf tucked around his neck before taking a walk around the town, not aware of the effects the scarf might have.]
II. Lunasa Ceremonies
[Newt was fond of dancing, but he was far less willing to dance this time around after his rather mortifying display before with the love potions and all.
He had only meant to watch the merriment (he enjoys people watching), but he finds himself suddenly being dragged into the middle and pushed into another person.] Ah wait- [Too late. It seems you're stuck dancing with the man who awkwardly is staring down at your feet and not your face.] I, oh Merlin, I'm quite sorry. I-
[At least he isn't drunk on some potion this time, but this is really not his element.]
III. Lunasa Catwalk
Oh, absolutely not. No.
[He'll dance with strangers and get pulled into their ceremonies. What he isn't going to do? Be a model for someone and walk some catwalk where everyone can stare at him. That is possibly...the last thing he would ever do willingly. Which is to say, it seems like he isn't getting much of a choice. The young fashion designers are just shoving clothes into his arms to change into.]
I- No- I didn't sign up for this.
[Help...]
IV. Mirror, Mirror (August 10th)
[It's early morning when he finds himself pulled towards the Looking-Glass House. He never had a strong care of going to it. Even with new people arriving, he wandered to the Coven moreso than the place filled with mirrors.
Yet, he found himself drawn to it and wanders into the same room where he had found himself arriving months ago. He places a hand on the mirror he had walked through out of; curious as to why he felt pulled towards it. It happens in a flash that he almost wouldn't have believed what had shown in the mirror. He would, if it didn't weigh so heavy on him immediately.
The return to England to Paris to Hogwarts.
He backs away from the mirror as though it had burned him. He felt lightheaded. Breathless. Newt stares at the mirror before looking at the room before looking back at the mirror.
Eventually he leaves though and wanders through the town listlessly for a bit. Newt can be found throughout the city. His usual haunts, but there's a certain sluggishness in his step. A faraway look in his gaze as though he's not really focusing ahead of him and completely lost in a turmoil of thoughts.]
V. Pile's Plea (August 10th and beyond)
[Note: Newt is canon updated at this point]
[The loose pygmy jacks are a good distraction for Newt. He's a common face at Pile's Petagorium, unsurprising no one.
He's got an armful of the small creatures as he's running down a street following another one of the small rabbit-like beasts. Chasing slippery little creatures is somewhat of a normalcy for Newt. He had chased after his niffler countless times that chasing these little guys is almost refreshing. Though, the quantity of them is probably the most tiring part. With the nifflers, he had only five at most to chase after. With the pygmy jacks, he isn't sure if it'll ever end.]
Oh, come on now. [Weaving through people with furry animals in tow is also a little troublesome.] They weren't kidding when they said they weren't familiar with the city. I think I've found them in every corner of the city. [The ones already in Newt's possession look up at Newt innocently enough.]
VI. Wilde Quests
A
[He lets out a bit of a yawn before rubbing his eyes. Surveillance wasn't usually an issue for him. He had done plenty enough stakeouts in the past, but sleep had been fairly difficult as of late.
There was action here and there, which was enough for him to keep going, but enough downtime that it let him to his thoughts too long. He held his wand loosely in his right hand as he watched the witches work on their teleportation spells before glancing around him.
While Newt was usually a quiet man, he seemed quieter than usual.]
B
[Supply runs was better to keep him busy and being quiet, quick and undetectable was definitely a skill Newt had honed over his travels.] This way.
[He speaks in a hushed, quiet tone as he gestures his partner to follow him. He's equipped well enough to fight if they had to fight, but Newt would prefer getting through this without any fighting. He really had enough fighting for a little while.]
VII. Wildcard

Wilder's Recruitment #3 - Theseus
Their travels are filled with Newt's insistent questions. All the details of the moles before infections to what changes may occur with infection to how the creatures travel or attack. Knowing what they're up against was important, especially when they could do nothing but to kill them. A mix between mercy for the things that had been infected and to avoid it from spreading.
Both Newt and Theseus are equipped with their magic, but also keep the warhammer. Theseus was fairly new and Newt felt like there was still much practice still necessary in many of the magic branches that a back up seemed smarter, though he obviously has no love for using it.
They're left to their devices once they reach the lands.
Newt turns to Theseus as he draws his wand. "Figure it out ourselves they said. Well, you'd think they'd have more to say," Newt replies with a shrug. He can't say he's surprised, but he does wonder if it's a little irresponsible. "We've certainly got our work cut out for us."
no subject
If Theseus is completely honest with himself, he's not entirely confident in his own magic right now, but he's also not one to sit around while infections spread on the outside. This goes doubly true since Newt's involved. He's more than aware that his younger brother can fend and take care of himself, but this is also something out of their normal scope and Newt's also not as strong as he is back home.
Plus, the loss of Leta is still heavily weighing on his mind, even if he doesn't talk about it at all. It's fine. He's fine. Just. Think about the present.
"Informative blokes, aren't they?" Theseus dryly responds back, taking out his own wand and looking at the large field in front of them. He's probably standing closer to Newt than he normally would, but he hopes the other doesn't notice. Overprotective? No, not at all.
"Best if we can draw them out. Lay a trap and attack them there. The Wilders mentioned they operate through sound and vibrations..." He shifts the warhammer that's been strapped to his back, trying to play off how heavy the weapon is. "If magic can't draw them, we can possibly use this warhammer to create an intense vibration."
no subject
He rolls his sleeves up to his elbows.
"Well, they informed us, but I can't say they're much use passed that it seems. I suppose we did take the job and it isn't their job to involve themselves passed escorting us," Newt says with a bit of a snort. Perhaps it's their mindset of wanting to help others, but he can't imagine just tossing some people into a situation and leaving them in it. That wasn't something he could fathom.
He lets out a deep breath. "Once we start traveling farther into the fields, they'll notice us. We want to lure them out, so I agree. The warhammer may do well enough to agitate them to seek us out. Let's get to work, shall we?" He glances at the other. "Don't get hurt. The infection is a nasty bugger." And he doesn't want to see his brother getting hurt. His mind suddenly goes back to the dream. The destruction that had befallen the city. The remains of the zouwu that sat at the abandoned barracks. The ghostly apparitions that haunted the city. The idea that those apparitions could be his brother or he can come across his brother's-
He swallows audibly. "We've got to stop these things." Though, Theseus probably understands the difficulties of Newt having to take creatures down. While Newt had done enough hunting during his travels, it really wasn't quite the same as basically mercy killing the creatures they were about to face.
no subject
It doesn't sit completely right with Theseus. He's fine with it right now because it's Newt and him on this mission and they're both experienced wizards, but he didn't see any age requirement for taking on these 'quests.' Do these Wilders actually accept anyone that's willing to sign up?? There's children here for Merlin's sake and Theseus can't even imagine sending them on something like this
no one tell him about their world's future and Harry Potter."I'll be careful. Make sure you do the same." Theseus replies, concern flickering in his eyes as an image of Newt wounded and infected by these moles appears briefly in his mind. It makes his chest tighten, but he can't let himself be pulled into that mindset; it won't help him concentrate and Theseus doesn't want Newt to be distracted by him. He can already tell that he's upset about killing these moles and the Auror isn't about to push more weight onto him.
"We do."
Theseus looks at his brother for a few seconds and puts a hand on his shoulder, gripping it in comfort, before making his way out into the fields.
no subject
He stiffens at the contact, still seemingly uncomfortable with it. At the very least, he offers the other an awkward smile of some sort. "Handling beasts is my specialty."
Newt was certainly in his element. Theseus wasn't completely wrong that Newt may have done well to be an auror. Field work was something he was actually rather good with given his travels. Newt moves quickly and as quietly as possible. No amount of careful steps would stop the moles from noticing them, but his movements (albeit a bit awkward) was that of someone who knew exactly how to travel undetected. In hindsight, it was probably the first time he really had seen the other in action since perhaps the war and the Paris rally.
"Let's try to stay away from any structures as long as possible. We don't want to risk getting hurt if they destroy any of its support and minimize property damage." He says that, but there's definitely going to be property damage with these two. That, and higher elevation would possibly help them at times given that the moles have an advantage on the ground.
no subject
"I agree." Newt's already got the right idea about this, but Theseus expects no less from him. Maybe some wizards have the tendency to underestimate him, but he knows the dangers in Newt's work. Although, if Theseus is honest with himself, Newt doesn't have the best track record of keeping structures undamaged. It's definitely not his fault, but it always seems to happen with Newt.
New York is a great example.
"Keep damage low, run less of a risk of getting injured. We'll want to draw them out soon, rather than getting caught by surprise." He nods at Newt. "I've been practicing most with protection charms, and I'm certain that I can magic a noise loud enough to bring them out."
In other words, he's fine being the bait while Newt focuses on attacks.
no subject
Also, excuse you. New York wasn't!!! His fault!!! He just happened to be in New York when it happened and got inadvertently involved!! It's different.
Newt is a little surprised to hear that the other had spent most of his time with protective spells. While he wouldn't say his brother is incredibly aggressive, he had always considered the other more of a fighter than himself. Protective spellwork was something he was more akin to pouring his time into instead of offensive spells, since he was never big on fighting.
He doesn't particularly enjoy the idea of the other being bait though. Of course, if there's one trait the two really shared it was stubbornness and he was sure the other had no intention of changing their mind. "Fine, but you best be careful. We only know what they're like based of knowledge. We won't actually know how dangerous they are until we're actually fighting them." As though Theseus needed to be told. "I'm ready when you are."
no subject
But if there's anything Theseus is acutely aware of, it's the fact that Newt's definitely worried about his safety. It might be hypocritical of him, but he doesn't want him to be distracted by that. So, he smiles a bit too confidently at his brother, trying to at least get him to ease some of his tension. "I'll be careful. It'll be fine, Newt, I trust you."
And without letting Newt respond, he holds his wand up a little before a noise starts to crackle sharply from the tip, starting there and only getting louder with each passing second.
no subject
Even if Newt would be pretty good at being bait if they were honestly speaking."You better. Or I'll bewitch your hair pink if you go and get yourself hurt," Newt replies with. A means to try and bring some humour, even if his nerves were surely getting the best of him.The magizoologist slowly and quietly moves away from the other. It seems like it would make sense for him not to be too close to someone who was trying to be bait. Counterproductive even if he just stayed next to his brother.
And he can feel the vibrations under their feet already. It's so faint, but he has always picked up even the smallest details.
They were coming. Quickly.
no subject
Theseus can already feel the vibrations becoming more intense by the moment, so he steps a few feet back, away from Newt, while keeping the noise stationary as a focus point for the moles. He still has his wand raised to keep the sound going, but the Auror doesn't want to be standing right there when the moles pop up.
And it's probably just in time too, for three of the moles suddenly burst up from the ground, swinging wildly at the open air that still's ringing from the sound. It's truly fortunate that they're unable to see, as two of them are still in a frenzy, but one's able to sense the feint noise coming from Theseus' wand, and whips one of its infected strings at the wizard. Theseus manages to block the attack in time, throwing up a protective charm, but it's likely that he won't be able to do anything else but defend himself right now.
Especially as the other two moles have finally turned their attention on him as well, hearing the sound of the shield blocking an attack.
no subject
The earth underneath the two moles rumble before shooting up as though the earth itself had come alive. It slams up against the two moles trying to advance on Theseus and sends them flying with a pained squeal. Newt isn't too far with his wand raised. His focus was never on combative spells, but that doesn't mean he didn't take the time to learn. Newt was a pacifist, not a fool.
"Theseus. The warhammer." If Theseus wasn't as experienced in being on the offensive, he still had a weapon on hand to fight the moles. Surely, the other could use it to his advantage. Right?
no subject
He quickly slides his wand into his pocket and pulls the warhammer from his back, managing to secure a tight grip on its handle before swinging down as hard as he can on the distracted mole in front of him.
A sound of metal breaking into bones and flesh resounds throughout the area as the mole lets out a dying noise, its claws waving around weakly before finally stilling. Theseus keeps the warhammer on the mole, just a little stunned by his own actions. He's certainly killed before, but not in this grim manner.
no subject
That and- "Don't just stand there!" The two other moles had turned their attention back to Theseus. The one they had killed was the smallest of the three, which can only mean... "They're rather cross with you, you know." The two moles dive back under the ground.
It's very unlikely the two moles are happy to know that they had just killed the other and Newt knows a thing about angered beasts. It's never a good time.
no subject
Newt's voice manages to break Theseus out of whatever trance he's been in, pulling himself up just as he watches the two remaining moles dive back underground. They're definitely not happy and he's still going to be their main target, but that's the plan, right? Theseus grips the warhammer a bit tighter as he moves away from the spot he's been standing on, hoping that his light footsteps go unnoticed.
He doesn't want to count on the moles attacking where he was previously standing, but that's his current strategy. Maybe he'll have the time pull out his wand and--
Except one of the moles come up right in front of him, bursting from the ground with a ferocious snarl. And the second mole isn't far behind, roaring up from behind Theseus to have him surrounded. The Auror doesn't have much time to really do anything, except block the front mole's attack with the hammer.
The second mole, however, has a wide opportunity to attack...
no subject
Newt has his wand out; hand shaking slightly. He had set the creature on fire. By no means, did he think it would kill the beast, but it was more to distract it from attacking Theseus. And it was at least successful, because the mole has returned back underground; using the earth to quickly put itself out. At the very least, this gives Theseus a bit of time to handle the mole before him before the other mole tries to attack again.
That is...if the second mole is still intent on targeting Theseus.
no subject
Well, that's two down.
Theseus spends less time recovering from killing the second mole, now looking for the final one. It's definitely not going to be pleased and Theseus begins to move away from the body, tense but ready.
no subject
The younger Scamander is already trying to scramble back out. It isn't necessarily deep or anything, but it definitely puts him in a more vulnerable position. Especially since they don't know where the remaining mole was still. "Thes-"
no subject
There's no time to feel relieved that Newt hasn't fallen hard, because with a familiar screech, the final mole digs itself up from behind the younger Scamander, rearing its tentacles and claws at him. Theseus feels the warhammer slip from his hands as he pulls out his wand, pushing back the familiarity of someone he loves about to be attacked by an enemy.
He can't let this happen again. He can't lose--
"STOP!" A pointless yell, but Theseus couldn't stop himself as he sends a paralyzing spell straight at the mole. It's enough to stop it, but the effect will only last a few seconds.
no subject
Of course, it never comes. He scrambles out and quickly gets to his feet and turns to find that Theseus had temporarily immobilized the mole.
Newt doesn't think; the earth rumbles before it suddenly shoots up to launch the mole into the air while it's immobilized. "Theseus! The hammer!" He's not sure if he's asking for it or if he wants Theseus to use it, but he most definitely wants the hammer. Newt's offensive spells just weren't strong enough to kill. They were certainly good enough to cause damage, but he hadn't invested any amount of time to being lethal. It wasn't really in his nature to.
no subject
Theseus figures that Newt's in a far better position to land a lethal blow. And while he knows that killing is always a sort of last resort for either of them, he just trusts that he'll be able to go through with such an act. It's why Newt called for the weapon, right? They took this job together and knew that this would have to be the end result.
...He'll talk to Newt later on, when this is all over.
no subject
Which is fine because Newt easily catches the weapon; using his momentum to swing the hammer one-handed to slam it into the mole as it falls back to the earth. The sound it makes gives him goosebumps and he tries not to think too much on it.
Newt knew that you can't save everyone or every creature, but it was rough to still go through with it.
no subject
"..."
He cautiously begins to move towards him, taking care to avoid any more pitfalls, but Theseus wants to double check on Newt right now. He's just standing there with a bloodied hammer, the remains of the moles caked on the weapon and it's quite a gruesome sight. Maybe if Theseus wasn't so preoccupied with his brother, he would've noticed the small twitch of the mole behind him, not fully defeated yet...
no subject
His casual stumbling quickly became a run towards Theseus. "Theseus!"
Things were chaotic, they hadn't checked to make sure that they were surely dead. The body naturally fights to stay alive- Ah, Merlin. Why is he even thinking about this all. He needed to get to Theseus before the mole did!
no subject
The loud screech from behind him soon answers all questions.
He's able to look back in time to see one of the mole's infected tentacles lash out towards him. The shock of seeing the critically injured mole still alive almost throws him off balance. Theseus barely manages to toss up a shield charm, but the appendage breaks through it, the spell only slightly slowing it down. There's definitely no time for Theseus to dodge now.
no subject
One moment, Newt is running towards Theseus. The next moment, Newt has forgo the whole running aspect and just teleports himself between Theseus and the mole. For a moment, he doesn't even register the pain that goes across his back (maybe it's the adrenaline). He just wraps his arms around the other to shield Theseus from the appendages from the infected mole.
He just offers this shaky smile to Theseus.
