But it is, alas, not merely a bunch of spiritualists with weird beliefs about a fatal disease; it's a bunch of spiritualists with weird beliefs about a fatal disease, a penchant for kidnapping, and a heavy hand with mind-control, and they've managed to ensnare two of Myr's Bonded in their madness. It's thus he's committed to carry through on the investigation, and use his own particular skillset--and earnest empathy for people who want as strongly as these do to believe--to learn enough the Coven can do something about them.
