With you, if a stranger approached and began to praise you, you'd immediately be on guard. Even if they compliment your intelligence, something you agree is your strength, it wouldn't matter if you didn't already have some respect for them.

Besides, a priest is used to being worshipped. You'd need to stand out. They'd be a lot less likely to be interested in someone who didn't believe. If they're smart enough, somebody who asks interesting questions might get their attention. If not, an attractive face is more likely.
