Two hundred years.

[ Almost exactly, but few people are counting the anniversary anymore. For the pre-war ghouls, it was a reminder of the day everything changed, including themselves. For everyone else... ancient history. The world had nearly been destroyed that way and they lived in what was left, and that was just what it was. ]

I grew up in a place that was mostly sealed off; we had things left from before the war to learn about. Most of them barely matter anymore.

[ What good was naming the twenty-fifth president when you were being stalked by a Deathclaw? ]

Survival mattered more.

[ It's a guess — no, more than a guess. Projection of Rey's own understanding, and how little literacy and history had mattered on Jakku. If it couldn't be traded for water and rations, it was easily dismissed as useless. There's no judgment there; despite what she had gleaned from old databanks, education had never been her priority.

Not with starvation looming as a threat on the horizon. Rey understands survival better than anyone, understands the opportunities it takes from people, the experiences they might have otherwise had. Idly, her fingers splash through the water, turning over the insight in her head.

Was there no way to leave your world?

[ She's encountered all kinds here, after all. Children that train at academies. Those used to space travel, like her. Those that have never heard of it at all. She has to wonder where Lex falls on the scale. ]

Exactly.

[ There were some people who clutched to the past; Lex had been paid quite handsomely to steal the Declaration of Independence for a collector. History, though, hadn't helped her get through the super mutants. Guns had. ]

No. They had limited space travel before the war, but nowhere to go. And if there were other- planes of existence, I guess, we didn't know about them.

[ She shrugs, water sloshing around her. ]

Just a desolate planet, the creatures that adapted to it, and what's left of the human race.
