( pain. eyes pink-rimmed with too much to unpack here, and lan wangji doesn’t know whether he’ll ever be privy to wei wuxian’s concealed hurts. maybe he caused them. it would explain his friend’s reluctance to speak of bonds, especially with him, a difficult choice perhaps, but a logical one, if nothing else. all i need is you here beside me. but is it? it sounds too much like the kind of false reassurance lan wangji frighteningly hoped for, and now that it’s out there, he doesn’t know what to do with it.

his heart sinks, endlessly it seems, a bottomless pit. the golden hue of wei wuxian’s eyes scorches through him, eroded memories grazing the back of his mind. reds. the crimson richness of smiling and thoroughly kissed lips, and words, spoken intimately, promises of forever.

his gaze drifts unfocused, stuck between past and present, like a trance. when he speaks, there’s a pensive frown twisting his face, voice hesitant but even and soft, his grip gentler. )
Meet or part, live or die… We’ve made oath, you and I. ( a vow. no, two, and lan wangji slowly blinks his daze away, the words ringing distant in his ears as he delicately lets go of wei wuxian’s wrist.

in the dark, unbeknownst to him, a few strands of his hair gradually turn grey. )
