a new look.

[ a quest that'll give lance new clothes to look good in is a quest that absolutely cannot be passed up, in his humble opinion. he's more than happy to give the designers some tips when they ask for his own personal style, but he's mostly excited to see what they have for him to model. sure, he probably can't keep the clothes, but he'll probably take a few selfies with them anyway for safe keeping.

also, this is good for his ego.

he walks out of one of the designer shops wearing some pretty fancy clothing (excluding the crown). it's well-fitted, comfortable and easy to move in. there's even a slot in the back for his fin, too! he looks very, very happy wearing it. catch him looking fancy anywhere in the city! ]

cheerful buns.

[ 'cheerloaves', huh... he feels like he should've been able to guess what this would entail after hearing the name, but somehow he wasn't prepared to come up with compliments for loaves of bread. he was doing okay at first and complimented the bread on its (potential) smell, texture, warmth -- but after some time, lance started running out of things to say. there're only so many things you can say about bread, after all.

and he's looking desperate for help, because one of the bakers is saying that the bread needs more cheer. ]

How many compliments do you need?!

[ whoops. he's a liiiittle frustrated. but if he sees anyone passing on by, he won't hesitate to run outside and flag them over. ]

Hey, I could use some help here if you've got time! And compliments. Tons of compliments for some bread dough!

circque mystique (3rd)

[ lance has always participated in aefenglom's various festivities. he's a guy who likes to be out and about and experience new things, and generally he tries to keep an open mind about them (though that often results in being unsuccessful), but this ring-toss game is not making him happy whatsoever. ]

Okay, I definitely had that one!

[ he gives up some cunes for another shot at the ring-toss, and he's actually throwing the rings properly. they seem to be on their way towards landing properly on one of the bottles, but every time it looks like it'll stay, the rings bounce off of the rims and land on the floor.

lance grumbles. he's not about to yell at the person running the booth -- he learned his lesson from the underground -- but he is about to yet again flag someone over to check his technique. ]

Can you do me a favor? Keep an eye on the rings for me? I'm ninety-nine percent sure my aim's right. It's gotta be the bottles...

anything else?

[ hit me up at amplitude if you wanna plot something! ]

[ lance doesn't really feel up for harvesting, but the job pays and hey, if he can get some cloth for his efforts? even better. he's in dorchact for the quest and he's ready to get to work, but he sees a familiar mullet in the near distance and there's no way he can't say hello. a little chit chat before work wouldn't hurt, right? ]

Keith! Over here!

[ he waves over to his buddy, who's near the edge of the field. lance is just outside of it, and he manages to avoid the plants brushing against him as he approaches keith. ]

Hey, man. Didn't realize you were doing this, too!

[ven is munching on a box of green mochi when he runs into lance at just the right time. immediately he brightens at the familiar face.]

Lance!

[his tail wags] Yeah, definitely! Are you having trouble?

Thanks, Ven.

[ he'd sound more excited to see his friend, especially with how ven's tail is wagging (adorable), but the salt is overflowing right now. ]

I don't think I'm the one having trouble! See, watch this.

[ he turns towards the bottles again and takes one of the rings. he leans back, bends his arm and tosses the ring. the ring sort of rattles on one of the bottles, and it looks like it should be a clean shot, but...it ends up falling off of the rim of the bottle and landing on the ground. ]

Look, see that?! That should've been spot-on!

[it's okay, he'll be excited for the both of them.

ven watches intently when lance throws the ring- and his eyes widen when it seems to just bounce right off when he obviously had it.]

Woah... No, I think you definitely got that one. That's so weird! Maybe it's... rigged?

[This is certainly the first time she's been asked to give compliments to bread before, but having seen this place before briefly, and knowing what she does about it, it's easy to guess this is some form of magic. The reflex to shun such things is still there, her piety undiminished, but it was becoming less voracious and loud.

Besides, she remembered this boy. She had seen him before and his cheerful demeanor was hard to ignore.]

Did you call it pretty? It looks so perfectly made, it rose in the oven without blemish or losing its shape. That's rather clever as well.

Well, I'm glad someone finally said it.

[ the man in the booth suddenly starts looking a little frantic, but he shakes his head. ]

Perhaps you're just getting unlucky. Try again, young man.

No, I'm not doing this again. [ he looks over at ven and hands him a ring. ] You wanna try?

I did! Trust me, I did.

[ he actually did. it was pretty embarrassing, but he got so desperate that he had to go through his plethora of cheesy pickup lines to add cheer to it. though...if there's someone new here, maybe that'll make a difference? ]

I don't know if the same compliments work twice, so you wanna give it a shot?

[Since becoming one of Tataru's test subjects, Allura has been acquainting herself with a lot of different fashion, but when she walked into the tailors today and heard she would be modelling some Earth-inspired fashions, she couldn't help but get a little excited. Just imagine when her friends see her!

It's different, to be certain, and Allura catches another glimpse of herself as she's passing a window in the shopping district. It's funny, to feel dressed up and dressed down all at the same time. (second from the left, just not a crop top). She doesn't know much about what human women wear on the Earth that Lance and Keith are from, but her jacket makes her feel like she'd fit right in with the boys.

It's when she's preening in the window that the sight of Lance catches her eye and she turns, smiling.]

Lance! [And she'll immediately jog over to him (the human shoes: very comfortable.] Look at you - you look like you're ready to appear in an Altean court!

[ when lance sees allura in casual wear, he has to do a double-take for two reasons: a) allura in casual earth wear sure is a look, and b) that look is gorgeous on her. he gives her a wave in greeting and a broad smile. ]

Allura! You look -- wow, this looks great on you!

[ it's nice to see her enjoying herself and coming out of her princess aesthetic. it's a sign that she's feeling comfortable, he thinks. lance rubs the back of his head a little when she compliments him. ]

Well, I'm glad you think I can pull off the Altean look. I had a feeling I knew where these clothes came from when the guy gave it to me.

[ his grin is toothy but sheepish. ] So...how does it feel, wearing earth stuff?

[ At this point, Keith's agreed to do this crop harvesting gig a bunch of times and he's well the fuck aware that the whispering cloud reeds are A Problem. As long as there's a wide berth of space between him and other people on the job, it's at least tolerable, but he feels the blood in his veins turn to ice the instant he hears that voice calling him out. He freezes very visibly, mind somewhat on autopilot as he shuffles back a step to keep some space between them. ]

Lance?

[ Jesus fuck -- maybe he should have known better than to think he wouldn't see any of Casa Voltron on a quest that requires manual labor rather than fighting considering Lance literally lives on a farm, but....

As he steps back though, one of the reeds inadvertently brushes his leg and a gleeful voice is aydible in the breeze. ]

Did you know Keith was the anon that was asking questions on the network?

[ ah.

lance hears that, and he was warned about the plants and their...honesty. he freezes up and his facial expression contorts into something that resembles a horrified smile of sorts. ]

That....was you...?

[ oh.

oh, quiznak.

lance freezes in place for a moment, and then he walks up to keith and puts his hands on keith's shoulders. he looks absolutely panicked. ]

You didn't tell Allura, right?!

It's stiffer than I expected. The jacket is cozy - now I understand why you and Keith like them so much.

[But enough about her. She leans forward on her tip-toes looking at the detail work on Lance's tunic.] I'm impressed, the only thing I had to show them was my jumpsuit from home. Maybe they were able to look inside a mirror to see my memories.

[Since the mirrors had already proved capable of that. Settling back on her heels, she looks him over again, biting her lip.]

It's... very good. [Stars, she's getting sentimental over a tunic. She shakes her head, laughing to shake herself from it,] But the ears would give you away immediately. How does it feel?

Man, who knows? I wouldn't be surprised if the mirrors played a role in it. Seems like anything's possible here, really.

[ magic stuff, oooooh. he smiles as she looks at the details on his tunic. ]

This is pretty comfy, too! Real easy to move in. Definitely not as stiff as earth clothes.

[ he laughs at the comment about the ears. oh, allura. you and your ear fixation.... ]

It's pretty cool, don't you think? It's like we traded places or something!

[She laughs too. Really, silly human ears have grown on her. (Not literally, ancients no.]

It is a little like that, isn't it? [Looking down at her outfit she imagines the sort of life that she might have lived in she swapped places with Lance.]

But it's not only clothes that make the man, if you're going to be a member of Altean royalty, you must carry it in your person. [Now she's having some fun, poking Lance's back to point out his posture.] Chin up, back straight. [It's like she's his governess.]

Ummm...

[he takes the ring hesitantly. the booth keeper looks a little pale in the face after being outed.]

Yeah, okay. I mean I'll probably have the same result as you, Lance.

[he holds out the mochi for lance to hold while he tosses the ring. will it land or will it bounce? ohohoooo]

Huh?

[Coming over, she lets herself use her wings to float so she can see better. Lance isn't winning? She can tell he's really confident and she wants to believe in him. Well, no. Not that. She does believe in him.

So. Of course she agrees.]

Okay. I'll watch!

[ You know who just so happens to be passing by the designer's shop? A certain harpy, that's who.

Normally Yuma prefers to keep to the skies, but he doesn't mind resting his wings every so often, and he can handle being on the ground for a while. If he gets restless, there are plenty of rooftops to perch on. Of course, he picked a good time to take to the road below, because he catches sight of a certain merrow wearing a particularly eye-catching look. Or at least, it certainly caught Yuma's eye. ]

...Lance? [ His jaw almost drops, and some of the feathers in his hair fluff up a little. Whoa, Lance looks great. ]

Wh-- hey!

[ lance does lift his head and straighten up his posture, but!! ]

Allura! [ ...then again, allura lost her home. she has nobody else to tell her these things or do these things with her from her home planet. this must be important to her. so he huffs...and gives her a little smile. ]

Alright, fine, Princess. Anything else I need to do to be real royalty?

[ lance holds onto the mochi, and the ring...

bounces. even though it was also a good shot. at that, lance narrows his eyes and says: ]

You know, I wasn't gonna say anything, but this game is rigged! Come on, man, there's no way either of us should've missed!

[ see? he knew he could count on you. lance takes a step back and gets into his throwing position...and when he launches the ring, it looks like it's about to land perfectly on one of the bottles.

instead, it bounces off; and the bounce looks sort of...unnatural. ]

Okay, see that? Is it me or is it the game throwing me off?

[ and likewise, yuma has managed to catch his eye because suddenly, a harpy started descending in his general direction. lance would've been more alarmed if he hadn't realized so quickly that it was yuma, and when he sees yuma's feathers puff up, he grins a little wider. he gives yuma a little wave. ]

Hey, Yuma! What do you think? Digging the outfit, aren't you?

[ he looks so proud to be wearing it! ]

Mm. Only a few decaphoebes of etiquette training from a governess. I should ask Coran to give you the rundown someday.

[Allura laughs, circling around him to stand in front.]

But that is just the dressing. What really matters is understanding that your position is one of service. To put others before yourself. [A tilt of her head,] So in that case, I think you are doing just fine.

[She clears her throat, realizing that she got a little bit too deep for this. Standing up straight.]

Now you do me. How do I fit in on Earth? I would like to visit it someday.

Oh! Lance! I am liking your new clothing greatly!

[It's all down to chance that Petra ends up passing him in the street, her face lighting up when she spots him and takes in his fancy new clothes.

She seems to have gone through a few final changes herself, her naga body now fully snakelike with dark, almost purple-tinted scales.]

[ven's ears fall when the ring bounces off just like all the others before it. even if he knew it'd probably fail it still sucked seeing it happen.]

I know my aim isn't that bad... [he frowns at the booth keeper.] You shouldn't be tricking people like this! It isn't fair at all.

Oh? Well, I heard that you could compliment each other, you know.

[Enter one (1) menace, just conveniently passing by, picking up odd jobs as you do to fuel a book problem. No big deal.

Well, no big deal until he also digs his hands in to start helping knead the dough.]
