1. The rats will adjust fine when introduced gradually to light. They're hardy little ("little") buggers. The velvet worm will stand the best chance of adjusting to life on the surface if he takes a brand-new hatchling and allows it to fully grow up there; the adult worms, on the other hand, would not be able to, as they're too used to the dark.

2. With some investigation, he will find that the red algae has mostly been spotted growing toward the moss in less-often-disturbed tunnels, often making lacy, fuzzy patterns on the rock walls. It doesn't seem to grow in very large clumps up until it reaches the protective moss. The velvet worms often eat the glowing algae, but they will adamantly refuse this red stuff.

As far as control methods, well... They've never had to control the glowing stuff all that much, it's very benign. A few Witches have tried to scour it off with magic, but it just keeps coming back thicker - simple physical removal just doesn't seem to work, and they're wary about trying more intensive solutions for fear of damaging the protective moss.
