Event Log: May, An Inauspicious Arrival

Event Log: May, An Inauspicious Arrival

I. Boaltinn (1st - 3rd)

Boaltinn comes around again. A handful of Mirrorbound will remember the holiday from last year, but for others, it will be brand new. In both Residential Districts, bonfires burn in central locations through the night, frequented by the residents celebrating another summer come to Aefenglom. Curiously, while last year the bonfires seemed quite segregated by human or Monster, this year, there is more of a noticeable mix at each, and Mirrorbound are invited to join the games and festivities quite happily. Characters are invited to try and jump through the bonfire's flames to burn away any poor relationship experiences, be it romantic or platonic, past or present; to aid them in this, those at the Eastern Bonfire will give those participating rune-etched accessories to protect them from the fire.

The city has quite a bit to offer for this holiday: shared rose baths at public bathhouses and pleasure establishments that increase feelings of friendliness and talkativeness, poles draped in ribbons meant to be danced around, wrapping a ribbon around the pole to bring good luck for the summer, food stalls whose offerings are meant to be shared, and fortune-telling set up by Divination students of the Coven, who can tell your day is going to go.

To see last year's Boaltinn prompts, you can take a glance right here! Much of it, including the bonfires, baths, and entertainments will be similar this year, so feel free to use those in your top levels.
II. An Unusual Arrival (3rd on)

A full year from the arrival of the first group of Mirrorbound, the 1st passes quietly, with no one showing up in the mirror-lined halls of the Looking-Glass House. Dates and times are important in most kinds of magic, and this is strange enough that some Witches of the Coven get together on the night of the 3rd to try a probing ritual, attempting to gather some kind of clues that could be useful in prying out the cottage's secrets. Boaltinn is the best time for such things, when the boundaries are thinner, and magic is stronger.

Those who are awake that night at 3 am might notice a pulse of harmless silvery light that spreads like ripples on water throughout the whole city, originating at the Looking-Glass House, but nothing further happens, and the Coven receives no answers.

Well, nothing happens in the Looking-Glass House.

Before long, the reports start coming in: people are emerging from mirrors, regular old mundane mirrors, all over the city. Anything with a particularly reflective surface could be an entry point for someone from another world! Inhabited homes, businesses closed and locked for the night, pools of still water in fountains or the river, these unorthodox Mirrorbound pop up anywhere and everywhere, causing chaos for the City Guard (folks aren't happy to find strangers in their bathrooms at 3 in the morning) and the Coven both.

Out of nowhere, a glint of light catches your eye; your heart thunders in your ears as your body moves on its own, your mind consumed with inspecting the source. Your reflection stares back at you, just as curious from the surface - a mirror, a pool of water, your most trusted sword, something fleeting that your mind can barely remember - then ripples at your touch. If you are one of these unfortunate arrivals, it's likely a rude awakening for you, to find yourself somewhere inconvenient, somewhere other than where you've been. It only makes sense to be confused. Hopefully someone finds you and explains to you what's happened to you.

Resident Mirrorbound will hear a message from Miss Nessie shortly after it begins, a call to arms: "Dears, I'm quite sorry to disturb you, but it seems your fellows are arriving elsewhere than the Looking-Glass House this month! We're trying to track them all down for the usual welcome, but we could use a hand or several! If you could just bring them by the Coven, the usual spot, that would be lovely." She'll give her usual orientation and pass out Watches, but no doubt the Mirrorbound will be more helpful in this regard, with so many arriving.

III. The Goblin Market (All Month)

Life goes on in Aefenglom, despite the addition of so many new residents. With the City Guard decidedly busy dealing with the sudden flood of break-ins (or, more accurately, break-outs?), the vendors of the Goblin Market find opportunity to set up their stalls more openly than they have since the crack-downs some months ago. They pop up all over the city, but clustered more often in the Residential Districts and the Harbor District, where there are even fewer law enforcement agents out and about to run them off.

These sellers, while not as devoid of morals as those major players of the Black Market, still have very few compunctions when it comes to lying, cheating, fencing stolen goods, and misrepresenting their wares to unsuspecting buyers. It's also the place to find those things that are- not quite legal, shall we say. They won't say a word if you don't. If confronted, they are quick to pack up their things and slip away, however; they know this city and its hiding places a lot better than you do.

With a brand new batch of what the natives assume are Mirrorbound, many undergoing rapid transformations into their Monster forms, many of the wares on display are potions: supposed cure-alls for aches and itches, calming draughts for the full moon restlessness, some even claim their brews can halt changes entirely! Some concoctions are meant to increase a Witch's magical ability, or decrease it, or provide them a finer control. They offer potions that they say will eliminate the need for a Bond, or temporary Bonding potions of their own that they claim are more pure, stronger, than the ones offered by the Coven.

Claims are only claims, though. A few remedies for the pain of changing or some regular temporary Bonding potions can be found here and there, but for every potion that works, there are twenty more that have less than pleasant side effects. A brew that will cause everything you touch to turn to solid gold for up to an hour; a potion that will invert your sense of direction - trying to turn right will make you turn left, trying to go forward will cause you to walk backward; a potion that will remove all traction from your feet, causing you to slide around as if cobblestone are the slickest ice. Worse, some shadier vendors sell things more sinister, including a potion that gives you the appearance of being moderately to heavily infected by the Cwyld.

Even if you don't drink any, the vendors are not at all careful where they're sloshing those bottles around, trying to show them off, and they all activate on skin contact.

IV. A Wilde Hunt (7th - 22nd)

All Mirrorbound, temporary or not, are likely to feel it. Monsters are always affected by the full moons, but this month, it is more. Stronger. Instincts rise to the surface as the Sisters emerge full and visible in the night sky, and for many Mirrorbound, they are undergoing rapid transformations into whatever type of Monster they are meant to be. Curiously, the natives get along like they usually do, noticing nothing out of the norm, other than the increased agitation and restlessness from Mirrorbound Monsters.

Monsters' aggression fades when the Sisters start to wane, but as the new moons approach on the 22nd, Mirrorbound Witches will notice their magical reserves overfilling, and will find themselves stricken with the overwhelming urge to use it, until casting spells, pushing one's magical limits, is almost a compulsion. Those who are not in proper Witch-Monster Bonds will feel it even stronger, with no stabilizing magic to consume (for Monsters) or avenues to expend magic (for Witches) other than casting spells. (For those who are interested, the Coven does offer temporary Bonding potions which can be used to help alleviate the effects somewhat.)

The Coven Witches notice the signs, and they take decisive action on the morning of the 6th, the day before the full moons. So many Mirrorbound, likely to be so heavily affected by the lunar cycle this month, many of them coming into new features and abilities at a breakneck pace, only spells danger for the city. They barricade off a massive chunk of Wilde outside Aefenglom, largely free of Cwyld and totally bereft of farms, homes, and Wilder outposts. They invite anyone who feels the effects of the moons too strongly to control to come out for a Hunt. The hunting grounds will be open nightly to anyone who needs to work off restless energy or overflowing magic; all participants will be warned that their safety cannot be guaranteed from others, but they won't be able to harm bystanders out here.

The woods are thick, with the river cutting through them, and full of wildlife. There is room to run and chase prey, or room to play with your developing magic. Play cat and mouse with your friends or Bondmates, or stalk a stranger. If playing games isn't your thing, there is something else to hunt out here as well.

With the deep Wilde entering into Winter, this patch of land so close to the city is much warmer, and fearsome Shades have emerged to search for prey. These were once living beings, Monsters, Witches, or animals, who have been overtaken by Cwyld infection long ago, leaving them dead but for the infection, white-eyed and seeking out sources of magic to consume and infect. Anything could become a Shade, but the most common out right now are the ferocious remains of bears, wolves, and nomadic Arachne and Turnskins. If not killed, these Shades threaten the people of the Outer City, when they inevitably escape the barricade. Careful to limit your contact, though; anyone infected upon their return to the gates will be escorted straight to the infirmary.

— an unusual arrival;
[ Izumi doesn't get a dignified entrance, because why would she? Her life has been hectic since the day she agreed to direct the Mankai Company and this is no different.

No. Izumi doesn't get to simply step out of a mirror and arrive in a new world. She rises, spluttering and coughing, out of a pool of water in the middle of the city, having been distracted by her reflection in a puddle in the courtyard of the dorms.

She shivers in the cold night air, soaked through to the bone, and carefully steps onto dry land, narrowly avoiding catching her foot on the lip of the pool edge. ]

( What on earth...?! )

[ If you're one of the few people out at this hour, familiar face or not, she'll try to flag you down, dripping water with each wave of her hand. ]

Excuse me! Excuse me!
— the goblin market;
[ The market is a beautiful, busy thing, reminding her of festivals back home and giving Izumi a nice distraction from the head-spinning strangeness of arriving in a new city and being told she is now capable of magic. She passes some of the stranger stalls, the ones offering oddly coloured potions that have her frowning sceptically at the claims even as a little voice in her head reminds her that this isn't any stranger than arriving here in the first place.

It's the seller offering a sparkly necklace — something which looks almost antique by Izumi's standards — and talking about how it repels evil that finally gets her to stop, watching the way it glimmers in the light. ]

It's pretty! [ If Yuki was here, he'd likely have a whole field of criticisms for her, but he's not, so Izumi can imagine how she might look with it on. Or— ] Can I try it on?

[ Izumi, darling, that's probably not a good idea. ]

[Reincarnated into Another World...Again?]

[When Katarina falls out of the mirror, there are several things that run through her mind. First, she can smell food, and she's hungry. Second, she assumes that she's died yet again, and been reincarnated yet again into another world. Third, the food smells really close and she's hungry.]

[She appears to be in a bathroom, of some sort, and when she exits, she realizes that she's in a restaurant. She sits down, and immediately starts eating...before realizing that she doesn't have any money on her. Whoops.]

[Katarina turns towards the person next to her, a smile on her face. If she makes puppy dog eyes, maybe this will work, right?]

Hey, you wouldn't happen to have any money on you, would you?

[Villainess in the Marketplace!]

[Being a noble, Katarina doesn't get the chance to go to the markets often. The Golbin Market is a rare chance for her to go out shopping, and she's enjoying every second of it.]

[The idea that the goods here might not be legal doesn't even cross her mind. Nothing really crosses her mind, except that there's a lot here that she doesn't recognize. She hops excitedly from stall to stall, checking each one to see what it has.]

Oh! What's this?

[Magic in the Woods]

[She's a witch! A real-life witch! And now that she has this opportunity, she's going to go into the forest to practice her magic.]

[Katarina finds an area to sequester herself off, and sets off to practicing. There's many manners of magic in this world, and she's lost all of her magic power from back home, but that doesn't stop her from being single-minded and stubborn. Katarina flings out her arm, concentrating.]

Come to me, dirt bump!

[A small mound of earth rises up, about three feet in height. Katarina looks like she just won the lottery.]

Did you see that!? That's the biggest one I've ever made.

[Juza's not out late very often, but he has a little bag of pastries he was planning on bringing home. He gets completely distracted when he hears his director's voice calling out to him and veers off course to greet her.]

[ She thought that head of hair looked familiar, but something in her insisted that it couldn't possibly be—

Maybe she fell and hit her head and this is all a weird fever dream. That would explain why she's looking at a completely foreign city, with Juza carrying a bag like he's been here for a while.

It's all part of her subconscious! Of course!

But her subconscious feels hella real and she's not going to begrudge being able to wrap a dry, still warm from body heat, coat around herself. Even if politeness says that she shouldn't get someone's coat soaked because of her own arrival. ]

A-are you sure...? ...Thanks. [ Warm warm warm. Just let her make a happy little noise as some of the cold dissipates under the new layer of clothing. ] Where are we?

[Omi's wandering, taking photos for promotional purposes, when a voice comes across to his ears, soothing, familiar.

That looks like trouble... with the Director's face? Omi's surprised to see her here, and he makes a beeline for her, sliding a gentle hand around the side of her waist and directing her immediately and firmly away from the stall.]

E-eh? [ She's a much better director than an actress, as anyone who's had the misfortune to witness would know, and it really doesn't help when Omi starts doing things like that. It takes her brain a minute to catch up with what's going on and what he's doing.

It was a cute necklace, dang it! ]

( An Unusual Arrival )

[The chaos invoked by the sudden arrival of new Mirrorbound in all manners of locations is felt just as much by those summoned as it is by the people of Aefenglom. Peering into the mirror, her intention had been to continue on as she would have any other day. But this was not any other day. The mirror she's been dropped out of is that of a dressing room.

That would be fine if it hadn't already been occupied by an innocent turnskin trying on clothing.

For both parties it was a moment of panic. For several reasons. The noise was-- well, few in the stores would have missed the pair of girlish screams.

But for Elie her instinct was to reach for her gun.

Only to be promptly tossed out of the store by other monsters.

She can't help it. In the middle of the sidewalk she sits for a moment, dumbstruck by everything that's just happened.
]

Did... did I imagine all that just now?

[Finding out she was actually still in bed would probably be the most logical discovery she could ask for. She's... not sure she's expecting that though.]

( The Goblin Market )

[Perhaps it's none of her business. This isn't her city-- she isn't considered a part of the law enforcement here and there are a lot of things she still doesn't know. However... seeing such a shady operation taking place-- she can't help it.

It's fine. She won't do anything. She's just... observing.

However, there are people being affected by their little schemes here. Reckless vendors sloshing around potions and hitting people with them by "accident". At the sight of someone getting hit, she is quick to act before thinking at all.
]

An Unusual Arrival

[The mirror in his bedroom being weird was bad enough. The weird headache from his mirror being weird was bad enough.

But arriving in some weird-ass fever dream by stepping out into some poor woman's dressing room?

Sakyo ducks as she chases him out, throwing a stool at his head that very nearly gets him. Ducking does cause his glasses to go flying, so now he gets to fumble around looking for those and praying no one steps on them.]

The hell is going on...?

Wilde Hunt

[Sakyo's still not sure he believes anything he's heard since arriving here, but it's hard to deny the weird wired feeling he's been dealing with the last few days or the fact that he can, apparently, use magic.

And he thought the weird-ass door at the dorms was bad.

So, when offered a place to go test this out and to safely work off that energy, Sakyo goes. It seems safe enough, and honestly he needs to do something before he rattles out of his skin.

Sakyo can be found more or less off by himself in this blocked off area of the Wilde, experimenting with his magic.]

[personal profile] livingimpaired 2020-05-03 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
a. an unusual arrival -- how rude

[ Kirei Kotomine has set into motion the plan to slowly corrupt Sakura Matou's heart. He gave a choice to Shirou Emiya knowing that there was no choice at all -- it was just choosing which way that he wanted to damn himself.

His smile curls as he felt something akin to self-satisfaction. He knew what was going on with Zouken and it would be a matter of time before he dealt with that disgusting worm. But for the moment, he settles in the feeling of "a job well-done." Soon his answer would be within his grasp. He could finally see if everything has been worth it.

He walks close to one of the windows of the cathedral. His gaze settles upon his transparent reflection in the glass. There is a smudge on the window pane and he walks over to carefully clean it off -- as his hand touches the smooth surface, he feels himself falling forward.

What is...?

His question stays incomplete as he suddenly appears within another cathedral. He doesn't fall through the window as he steps through it, and lands carefully on the unfamiliar floor. A Reality Marble? No, it is something else. Even a novice mage like himself could tell that much.

He pauses as he leaves the cathedral in slow, steady steps. Kirei pauses to take in the sight of the city; he breathes in the chill of the night air and hums to himself. His gaze settles on few people that are wandering around like he is -- their expressions are filled with confusion, maybe even panic.

A moment of joy comes at seeing their wretched faces, but it is met with disgust, as always. My answers are not here, but a priest like myself can still offer some guidance.

So, he steps forward and calls out: ]

Are you also lost?

b. the goblin market -- hoh?

A potion that assists with the pain of transformation, huh?

[ Alchemy? Well, it isn't like he is certain he can compare anything to his world. However, what little funds that he has in this world, he uses to acquire one of the potions in questions.

Kirei holds the bottle up to the light, he watches the liquid as it sloshes from side-to-side, then tucks it away in his pocket. Does he intend on using it? No. Does he intend on holding onto it just because? Yes. It may come in handy sometime in the future to someone else, as a priest should he not try to hold onto anything that may save someone from pain?

He chuckles to himself. ]

But really... I can't help but feel as though I'm surrounded by trash.

That's... [ What. Processing. Processing... Wondering if she's spent too much time around Muku and somehow gained his imagination through osmosis.

(Is that even how osmosis works? Man, she really did forget way too much of her school lessons.)

The only thing she can be sure of is that Juza — or at least what her subconscious has turned into Juza, because this has to be a dream, right? — probably isn't lying or trying to mess with her. He's never been like that. So he truly believes this is a place called Aefenglom. ]

[Nitocris tumbles out of a mirror in the back of a stall in the Goblin Market, a dusty little thing that, by all accounts, shouldn't have been big enough to spit her out in the first place. Picking herself up, she turns to look at it and huffs. It's tiny and dusty and scratched and ugly. On the other side it was her own mirror, a dark and gorgeous thing. What a poor trade.]

[On top of which, she doesn't know where she is. It's the sort of thing she should take in stride, she knows, but the prickle of uncertainty turns to dread as it crawls up the back of her neck. Nothing to be done but handle the situation, though. She strides out of the stall with her shoulders squared, brows drawn into a stern line.]

[Within five minutes, she's had to chase away about ten vendors attempting to press their wares into her flinching hands. The set of her shoulders is still firm, but it's clear the insistent bustle of this place is wearing on her a bit. She keeps her cool until a vendor shoves a vial apparently intended to increase magical potency at her with what she considers to be an unacceptably cheeky wink that she . . . kind of blows up. And throws it back at him.]

I have no need for your dubious wares! For that matter, I wouldn't dare consume anything created by someone of your caliber! How dare you approach a Pharoah in such a familiar manner, without any consideration for even the commonest courtesy!

[A Pharoah is throwing a tantrum. Please help.]
ii. boaltinn
[The festivals are still overwhelming — and ubiquitous — but they're at least meant to be fun rather than just pushy and kind of dangerous. After settling in for the time being, she ventures out, ideally accompanied by someone she trusts at least a little bit. She's willing to brave the crowds alone once or twice, though.]

[The food stalls are an obvious hit. She's curious about trying everything that the city has to offer on these festival days and will, after trying something herself, offer it to her companion with a grave,]
We have to share. [What she appears to like best is the bubbly milkshake-esque drink, which she shares a little more reluctantly than other things. But she does cave eventually. It's the rules of Boaltinn, after all.]

[Late in the evenings, she's easy to find at the bathhouses, slumped low in the warm water with her ears drooping in the water, a rose petal or two stuck to them, or to the tip of her nose. She's breathing, for sure, but is she awake? Debatable. Either way, she looks exhausted. Even if someone tries to get in quietly, she blinks sleepily at any disturbance of the water. Of course, you could be meaner and splash her in the face. If you were an asshole.]

[ when raven had pressed her fingers to the blade of her sword, she hadn't expected to be pulled into an entirely different world completely. she's very, very unhappy with this, too, seeing as though she was right in front of the vault -- so close to the relic of knowledge. so close to what she'd needed.

she emerges from the window of what appears to be a closed clothing shop, judging by what's in the display window (and wow are those clothes very unusual). she scowls and keeps her hand on the hilt of her sword, stepping forward. her heels clack on the pavement, which will at least announce her presence to anyone who happens to be nearby.

and if you're one of the unfortunate ones to cross her path, she'll meet you with a glare, pulling out her sword just the tiniest bit -- a way of saying that she has a lethal weapon and she's not afraid to use it if she needs to.
]

You there. [ her eyes narrow. ] Tell me where I am and how I got here. [ she steps closer and pulls just a little more of her blade out for you to see. ] Now.

the goblin market
[ the day after her arrival, raven ventures out to the market. she's not searching for anything in particular, merely seeing what her options are while she's here and what will help her accelerate her acclimation to magic while she's here. she needs to be capable of fending for herself while she's here. more than that, she needs to be capable of getting what she wants, should the opportunity to grab something particularly interesting arise.

you might be able to catch her taking a from her window shopping, sitting on a bench in a more secluded area of the harbor district, cleaning her sword. it's definitely taken a bit of a beating, what with all of the scratch marks on it. it's hard to tell if those marks are fresh or not, though.

later on, however, she returns back to the marketplace and she's waved over by one of the vendors selling potions. there are ones that are advertised as raising a witch's magical ability, which actually does intrigue her -- but the real seller here appears to be a potion that nullifies the need for a bond. that's what gets her talking. however, she is still new to aefenglom and is questioning the legitimacy of these potions. not to mention that she doesn't have any money to spend on them, either. damnit.

she walks away from the stall, and finds someone who looks like they may know what they're doing (you!). they've got their back towards her, though, so suddenly they'll be met with a very rude push of their shoulder to get them to turn around.
]

I have two questions for you, and I want answers. [ looks like she's not taking no for an answer. ] I want to know if these potions are legitimate. And if they do work... I want you to prove it.

[ WELL. GOOD LUCK. ]

Why would you say that?! I have a cool undertone! Blues look good on me!

[ Nope, she was never meant to be an actress, but there's certainly a lot of relaxing, and a grateful smile, when she sees Omi out of more than the corner of her eye. ]

... I thought it was pretty. [ Maybe a bit extravagant, something that looked more like a prop than an actual accessory, but pretty. THAT'S BESIDES THE POINT ] Omi, you're here too?

[ Well, Sakyo is an efficient distraction from the sparkly, at least. ]

It's... [ Oh, wow, 30... cunes? Yikes. ] A potential prop!
