Event Log: May, An Inauspicious Arrival

Event Log: May, An Inauspicious Arrival

I. Boaltinn (1st - 3rd)

Boaltinn comes around again. A handful of Mirrorbound will remember the holiday from last year, but for others, it will be brand new. In both Residential Districts, bonfires burn in central locations through the night, frequented by the residents celebrating another summer come to Aefenglom. Curiously, while last year the bonfires seemed quite segregated by human or Monster, this year, there is more of a noticeable mix at each, and Mirrorbound are invited to join the games and festivities quite happily. Characters are invited to try and jump through the bonfire's flames to burn away any poor relationship experiences, be it romantic or platonic, past or present; to aid them in this, those at the Eastern Bonfire will give those participating rune-etched accessories to protect them from the fire.

The city has quite a bit to offer for this holiday: shared rose baths at public bathhouses and pleasure establishments that increase feelings of friendliness and talkativeness, poles draped in ribbons meant to be danced around, wrapping a ribbon around the pole to bring good luck for the summer, food stalls whose offerings are meant to be shared, and fortune-telling set up by Divination students of the Coven, who can tell your day is going to go.

To see last year's Boaltinn prompts, you can take a glance right here! Much of it, including the bonfires, baths, and entertainments will be similar this year, so feel free to use those in your top levels.
II. An Unusual Arrival (3rd on)

A full year from the arrival of the first group of Mirrorbound, the 1st passes quietly, with no one showing up in the mirror-lined halls of the Looking-Glass House. Dates and times are important in most kinds of magic, and this is strange enough that some Witches of the Coven get together on the night of the 3rd to try a probing ritual, attempting to gather some kind of clues that could be useful in prying out the cottage's secrets. Boaltinn is the best time for such things, when the boundaries are thinner, and magic is stronger.

Those who are awake that night at 3 am might notice a pulse of harmless silvery light that spreads like ripples on water throughout the whole city, originating at the Looking-Glass House, but nothing further happens, and the Coven receives no answers.

Well, nothing happens in the Looking-Glass House.

Before long, the reports start coming in: people are emerging from mirrors, regular old mundane mirrors, all over the city. Anything with a particularly reflective surface could be an entry point for someone from another world! Inhabited homes, businesses closed and locked for the night, pools of still water in fountains or the river, these unorthodox Mirrorbound pop up anywhere and everywhere, causing chaos for the City Guard (folks aren't happy to find strangers in their bathrooms at 3 in the morning) and the Coven both.

Out of nowhere, a glint of light catches your eye; your heart thunders in your ears as your body moves on its own, your mind consumed with inspecting the source. Your reflection stares back at you, just as curious from the surface - a mirror, a pool of water, your most trusted sword, something fleeting that your mind can barely remember - then ripples at your touch. If you are one of these unfortunate arrivals, it's likely a rude awakening for you, to find yourself somewhere inconvenient, somewhere other than where you've been. It only makes sense to be confused. Hopefully someone finds you and explains to you what's happened to you.

Resident Mirrorbound will hear a message from Miss Nessie shortly after it begins, a call to arms: "Dears, I'm quite sorry to disturb you, but it seems your fellows are arriving elsewhere than the Looking-Glass House this month! We're trying to track them all down for the usual welcome, but we could use a hand or several! If you could just bring them by the Coven, the usual spot, that would be lovely." She'll give her usual orientation and pass out Watches, but no doubt the Mirrorbound will be more helpful in this regard, with so many arriving.

III. The Goblin Market (All Month)

Life goes on in Aefenglom, despite the addition of so many new residents. With the City Guard decidedly busy dealing with the sudden flood of break-ins (or, more accurately, break-outs?), the vendors of the Goblin Market find opportunity to set up their stalls more openly than they have since the crack-downs some months ago. They pop up all over the city, but clustered more often in the Residential Districts and the Harbor District, where there are even fewer law enforcement agents out and about to run them off.

These sellers, while not as devoid of morals as those major players of the Black Market, still have very few compunctions when it comes to lying, cheating, fencing stolen goods, and misrepresenting their wares to unsuspecting buyers. It's also the place to find those things that are- not quite legal, shall we say. They won't say a word if you don't. If confronted, they are quick to pack up their things and slip away, however; they know this city and its hiding places a lot better than you do.

With a brand new batch of what the natives assume are Mirrorbound, many undergoing rapid transformations into their Monster forms, many of the wares on display are potions: supposed cure-alls for aches and itches, calming draughts for the full moon restlessness, some even claim their brews can halt changes entirely! Some concoctions are meant to increase a Witch's magical ability, or decrease it, or provide them a finer control. They offer potions that they say will eliminate the need for a Bond, or temporary Bonding potions of their own that they claim are more pure, stronger, than the ones offered by the Coven.

Claims are only claims, though. A few remedies for the pain of changing or some regular temporary Bonding potions can be found here and there, but for every potion that works, there are twenty more that have less than pleasant side effects. A brew that will cause everything you touch to turn to solid gold for up to an hour; a potion that will invert your sense of direction - trying to turn right will make you turn left, trying to go forward will cause you to walk backward; a potion that will remove all traction from your feet, causing you to slide around as if cobblestone are the slickest ice. Worse, some shadier vendors sell things more sinister, including a potion that gives you the appearance of being moderately to heavily infected by the Cwyld.

Even if you don't drink any, the vendors are not at all careful where they're sloshing those bottles around, trying to show them off, and they all activate on skin contact.

IV. A Wilde Hunt (7th - 22nd)

All Mirrorbound, temporary or not, are likely to feel it. Monsters are always affected by the full moons, but this month, it is more. Stronger. Instincts rise to the surface as the Sisters emerge full and visible in the night sky, and for many Mirrorbound, they are undergoing rapid transformations into whatever type of Monster they are meant to be. Curiously, the natives get along like they usually do, noticing nothing out of the norm, other than the increased agitation and restlessness from Mirrorbound Monsters.

Monsters' aggression fades when the Sisters start to wane, but as the new moons approach on the 22nd, Mirrorbound Witches will notice their magical reserves overfilling, and will find themselves stricken with the overwhelming urge to use it, until casting spells, pushing one's magical limits, is almost a compulsion. Those who are not in proper Witch-Monster Bonds will feel it even stronger, with no stabilizing magic to consume (for Monsters) or avenues to expend magic (for Witches) other than casting spells. (For those who are interested, the Coven does offer temporary Bonding potions which can be used to help alleviate the effects somewhat.)

The Coven Witches notice the signs, and they take decisive action on the morning of the 6th, the day before the full moons. So many Mirrorbound, likely to be so heavily affected by the lunar cycle this month, many of them coming into new features and abilities at a breakneck pace, only spells danger for the city. They barricade off a massive chunk of Wilde outside Aefenglom, largely free of Cwyld and totally bereft of farms, homes, and Wilder outposts. They invite anyone who feels the effects of the moons too strongly to control to come out for a Hunt. The hunting grounds will be open nightly to anyone who needs to work off restless energy or overflowing magic; all participants will be warned that their safety cannot be guaranteed from others, but they won't be able to harm bystanders out here.

The woods are thick, with the river cutting through them, and full of wildlife. There is room to run and chase prey, or room to play with your developing magic. Play cat and mouse with your friends or Bondmates, or stalk a stranger. If playing games isn't your thing, there is something else to hunt out here as well.

With the deep Wilde entering into Winter, this patch of land so close to the city is much warmer, and fearsome Shades have emerged to search for prey. These were once living beings, Monsters, Witches, or animals, who have been overtaken by Cwyld infection long ago, leaving them dead but for the infection, white-eyed and seeking out sources of magic to consume and infect. Anything could become a Shade, but the most common out right now are the ferocious remains of bears, wolves, and nomadic Arachne and Turnskins. If not killed, these Shades threaten the people of the Outer City, when they inevitably escape the barricade. Careful to limit your contact, though; anyone infected upon their return to the gates will be escorted straight to the infirmary.

I can hardly imagine it.

[ Says the man currently wearing at least three layers. He flick Grog a look out of the corners of his eyes, and then almost visibly lets it go. Some things are not worth arguing, Many things, with this particular person. But Percy is a bit too pleased to see a familiar face to let it bother him. ]

When did you get here?

[ Demon hunting. Well that's certainly not something he's heard before. There are the occasional foolhardy souls that venture into the Hells for all number of reasons, but they tend to be rather few and far between for good reason. And yet something about the almost offhand way she says it makes it hard for Percy to doubt her at all.

One eyebrow may lift slightly, but he reaches to take the offered hand without hesitation. ]

Percival of Vox Machina at yours. Call me Percy.

[ He has a least mostly learned to stop giving out his full name. But one side of his mouth quirks up slightly as he retrieves his hand. ]

And no, it doesn't. There hasn't been as much call for my particular business either. Well, one of them. There's work to be found for a forge-hand just about anywhere.

[Alucard's quick enough to insist on paying for the crepe, and as they walk away, he's cautious as they move. There is nothing worse than walking into someone and losing all of one's food.]

Then your stomach is far more powerful than my own.

[Alucard's stomach is also a more savory creature.

There's nothing but endless food ahead, but Alucard does know the area. He hums softly, considering:]

I think there's a plaza up ahead with a central fountain that makes acceptable seating, if you don't want to try and eat and walk.

[Rufus pays barely any attention to the goblin as well, the insults not even receiving an acknowledged look from him. Why waste his time or even a minuscule of his effort for something like that? Especially when Lockhart is still of major interest.

There's much to learn, like if any of her friends from home are here. It'll be good to know, especially if everyone's favorite former SOLDIER is sulking around. Always someone to count on if you need something terrible defeated... aka Cloud's a good backup plan if needed.]

Why wouldn't I construe that as a compliment?

[But regarding her comment...]

Appearing calm is half the battle. [A small part of him definitely isn't thrilled to form a bond with another person, but he'll make do. He'll find a way.] Little is achieved from letting fear overtake you.

[By a certain time, people made a point of not coming by a particular river in the Wilde. It was a particular deep lake with a waterfall cave that would be a perfect hideout... if not for the fact there was a monster in the depths.]

[Now, of course, plenty of them were monsters here. Still, being a monster didn't guarantee one was monstrous.]

[But forming a monster-monster bond and rampaging through each-others' magic supplies certainly helped. Along with Floyd's base personality, the new form he'd taken had knocked even more stability out of his head. He'd become a menace of the lake until people stopped coming by. With no one coming by he was left just feeding on the faint background energy of the forest. Ah, he hated it.]

[Slowly, slowly, sinking deeper into the water, until he finds a nook near the bottom. He closes his eyes and, briefly, his body isn't his body. It's the whole lake.]

[Where's something fun? Where's something bright? He waits for something to disturb the surface of the water. It's a long way down but when you're nine feet of muscular merrow you can get back to the top quickly.]

[ What turns to face Lancer is not the same familiar face that he had once known. Instead, due to the rapid transformation, Medusa has returned to something more familiar. More primal. (minus the wings)

Her idle slithering is interrupted by a hand upon her shoulder, which caused her to turn in the owner's direction with a volatile hiss. Controlling these sudden urges - fighting them as hard as she possibly could - was bad enough without someone snagging her attention.
]

There is... [ "Nothing fun about hunting prey", she wanted to say. But as she felt those scales harden and the primal desires grow stronger, Medusa slipped away from her restraint and felt that mouth of hers turn upward into a devious smirk. ]

Whoops!

[dumb, but not stupid is the name of the game here. Soren was not stupid enough to put the potion on himself, but he was sure dumb enough to carelessly spill it all over a stranger. Zuko seems to think the seller did as much, not him, and the two have an argument that Soren really considers just... dipping right out off.

He will not do that. Purely out of guilt of the scene he caused. He opens his mouth to try and start some kind of an apology, but then the cloth turns to gold]

[ Anastasia was in luck! Said warm blanket happened to be wrapped around Medusa's body as she walked past the fountain, both gained due to her (un)natural desire to hoard warm things and as an attempt to hide her scaley features from any who might recognize her.

Not that she had that much to worry about, given she was in a strange new place with strange new people. One of which tugged at what few heartstrings she had left, which made her work past her innate instincts and slip the blanket from around her own body, aiming to place it around Ana in an attempt to dry her off.

No words, at least not for now. She was always more of a woman of action anyways.

[ Chinatsu on the other hand, was far too stubborn and still not trusting enough to bond with someone else. It took her a long time to even agree to become Tataru’s dance partner. What more the kind of partnership where you could feel each other’s emotions?

So here she was, reaping the consequences. Her horns had grown our completely now, her legs fully transformed, and reddish fur now covering most of her body. The need to hide out in nature grew strong, the urge to find water even stronger. Something about it felt safer. The redhead brightens when she stumbles here way to what seems like an empty lake. It was gorgeous, with the waterfall and all. More importantly, no people to see her so annoyingly defenseless. For whatever reason, she felt a lot more skittish around them too. Talk about weak...

She makes her way to the water’s edge, dumping her clothes on the ground before stepping in. Maybe it was the weightlesness of the water, but it was surprisingly easy to move around. She wouldn’t think do with the hooves and all. Laying back, Chinatsu let’s the water hold her up, letting out a sigh of relief. Yeah, she could wait things out here. ]

[ What awaits the False Priest is a vitriolic expression befitting one touted as the monstrous Gorgon so long ago. Careful notice of the scales running across her arms could possibly tell Kirei wordlessly how she was beginning to regress, as would the sharp fangs that are noticeable when she went to speak.

Medusa slipped from beside one of the many passerby and sized the man up, like a lion sizing up a gazelle. These... changes. The newness of it all... it did little to hamper how hungrily she gazed at him. Unlike he, she knew of his wicked deeds. Knew what, in her timeline, he had done. Even if one of her most precious people was not here with them, that didn't change a thing in her eyes.

[ ...Disgusting? Part of her should be offended, both given her past nature and her current status as a Naga. But that part drifted away as a feeling of pity washed over her, both for the young boy shrieking his lungs out - surprisingly masculine given his stature - and the victim of his screaming.

She could have just turned away and went about her business but the vendor ended up flagging her down, attempting to get her to attest to the validity of the so-called 'disgusting juices' since she was half-snake. Her look couldn't appear anymore deadpan as she glanced from the vendor to- ... down to Andersen.

[Not a full guaranteed that Sephiroth will answer his questions, but the soldier's answer is not fully unexpected. Perhaps a little disappointing in a sense, but Rufus isn't worried; he still has many resources to get the answers he wants if it comes to it. It'll just take a little longer, and time seems to be on his side this time. Perhaps.

But it still seems likely that Sephiroth won't hold back on all of his answers, because no matter what, he is the one that's from the future and thus holds more information that he can potentially provide. And the general may be many things, but unintelligent is not one of them.]

Just a little over two years now. ['Thanks to you,' Rufus adds quietly in his mind. Of course, he'll not extend such gratitude out loud. There's definitely a lot of information he plans on withholding from him, which he doubts will escape Sephiroth's notice.] As you may guess, the former president of Shinra died of... unnatural causes.

Still, there's no help for it now, save for the help that is firing powerful shot after shot at the shades in the tree. It gives her more than ample enough time to keep that one wing up as a shield, while the other tucks alongside her, and she scrambles to her feet with care. A. An Unusual Arrival

[ Why? Why did it have to be mirrors? Was she destined to live a life that was specifically geared toward a curse of being set upon by the unfortunate fate bequeathed by reflective glass?! One minute she's being forced to look in a mirror against her will by a cheery and over-the-top aunt of her Master's beloved and the next she popped her head up out of someone's pool. Soaked from head to toe is not exactly how she wanted to spend her day.

Yet spend her day this way she had. More than a few heads turned due to the tightness of her clothes which, by this point, have been sufficiently replaced. The glasses she wore hadn't been a necessity and given that Cybele was no longer an issue she had no reason to hide her eyes behind a blindfold or glasses any longer.

Eventually you'll probably come across her, in one of three ways. The first is natural for some reason of your own design, the second is due to her bumping into you and trying to gauge the situation without an immediate apology and the third, the most comical of the bunch, is seeing a 5'7" woman walking around town with a large tarp over her body as if trying to hide every aspect of it. Someone heard about this whole "monster" thing and isn't being very receptive.
]

B. IV - The Wilde Hunt (TW for violence)

[ It finally happened. Sans the wings, Medusa has now reverted to the monstrous Gorgon form she once held in the past. Resisting it for too long caused her to become overwhelmed by what was essentially akin to a withdrawal and now, with glowing red eyes, the snake-like monstrous woman roamed the sectioned off portion of the Wilde. Wildlife are squeezed until they pop within her tail, fangs ripping bestial bodies to shreds and blood being consumed from the fallen prey.

Even if you happen to be one of her fellow Mirrorbound, a sentient Monster or a Witch unfortunate enough to find themselves within this part of the Wilde, none would end up safe from Medusa's rampage. She made no attempts at trying to be stealthy and hissed harshly at a few individuals that attempted to stop her, tearing them up just as badly as the others had.

You'll find Medusa in one of two ways. The first is during this frenzy, where you can try to stop her or just try to survive against her. The second is if you see her curled up and atop a hill within the forest overlooking a clearing, surrounded by trees. She's either sleeping or brooding, but if you find her in this state she's gained enough of her senses to not attack you on sight. Just don't expect a casual, cheerful interaction with the famed Serpent.
]

C. The Goblin Market

[ Would anyone have ever expected the brooding, silent, sultry Medusa to act like a young child? Because that is exactly what happened when the remnants of one of those potions splashed onto her as she attempted to peruse a few wares. ...Sorry, did I say act like a child? Because it hadn't just effected her personality. Without warning the magical elixir hit Medusa like a freight train and reverted her body, shifting her from the tall, adult looking woman down to a much smaller size. Not so thankfully, this didn't effect her clothes.

Much more thankfully, however, she had a large cloak on with a hood that obscured her. It isn't long after this change that she began zipping around the market, intentionally snatching elixirs so that she could dump their contents on unsuspecting people. Whatever that potion had been, it reverted her age and made her act much more rambunctious and like some form of prankster. Definitely indicative of acting the way she looked, apparently!

You can come across her and try to get her to stop, or you can be one of her "victims" who end up effected by an elixir yourself that she's messed with. You might even get hit by the same elixir, and possibly join her on her youthful mission of mischief.

Yeah. Usually she needs two big trees to make it work. [otherwise the party goliath might have trouble. And not even gnomes could travel via small shrubbery. Probably.] I only have a bit of animal speech that she taught me, the rest isn't really my forte.

I take it most people don't arrive in a forge then? [her nose wrinkles] Broken? Well, nothing shattered when I arrived, at least not where I could see it. But they didn't let any of us new arrivals near that Looking-Glass House you mentioned.

Hmm. [he does have a point] Just how big can a terror flock get? [most definitely not asking because dragons are one of her favoured enemies or anything COUGH]

Well, that's one good thing to keep close, then. [even if it's very minor, who knew when a healing potion would come in handy? 1 HP is better than 0 HP, after all!] I'd say it's more dishonest to be selling these in the first place. [ Tyrion and Varys had done well to council her – she thinks. Even if there are things she grows tired of, the secrecy and the whispers, but that was far more their games than hers. If she grew tired of it, they would know. Her time in Dragonstone was to be the lead they needed to plan their next moves, far away from Red Priestesses who would spread the tale of Daenerys Stormborn. Greeted upon empty, dead halls... it was as if nothing had transpired. The war table was vast, like Westeros itself, but she felt nothing walking through its halls. Not sure of who last claimed Dragonstone itself – Stannis, Renly, or Robert. Fueding men was hardly her interest. ]

I see. And your Lord whispered his name to you? [ She tenses up, almost as if her words had judgment behind them. It was a biting response, but there was hardly any time for that. The question wasn't who whispered what, it was about the way everything aligned. Her lips visibly twitch at the passage of time, of thinking that she was somehow... offering a glimpse of the woman's future. Of what her Lord had planned. The color in her face draws away, and she looks down, tongue to her cheek. ] He still squabbles for the throne, then?

[ It's fascinating to watch, honestly. The woman is unafraid but cautious, bringing herself down into his space and at his level; not many would be brave enough to do that with any size of dragon, and Drogon doesn't strike her as a regular pet..

The warning about fire is noted, but Vex is watching him, watching his change in stance. She glances away, following where his eyes go, and blinks once. Twice. A half-elf's dark vision is good -- but a dragon's makes hers even sharper.

Without further thought, bow swings up and there's an arrow loosed from Fenthras immediately, followed swiftly by a second. The first buries itself in the creature's chest, where what could be a shoulder curves into its collarbone; the second slices the shadowy flesh, drawing blood and a shriek that gives away its position.

[ well, then. that's a lot to digest in a small period of time. while he would have loved to use his vocabulary to continue their battle of idioms, she parts knowledge on him that takes immediate precedence.

Jorah has remained reserved with his words and thoughts up until now, but she can certainly see cracks beginning to form by the time she says her name. it's the words that follow her name, rather, that sends his neck forward as if she's passed on terrible news. he cannot help but bring his fingers through the hair that has filled along his jawline, his mind being pulled into various directions all at once.

it takes a moment to finally gather the words in response. he clears his throat and ties his hands behind his back in an attempt at refraining from bothering her with the various emotions that washed over him. ]

This may carry little weight for you considering your short tenure here, but — I know of your Lord of Light, Lady Melisandre.

[ he doesn't know how to feel. it's been... ten months, perhaps, since he and Daenerys have emerged from the mirrors in Aefenglom. in those ten months, he has never found a soul from either Westeros or Essos. there is no telling how much time he had spent trying. Jorah, as she will quickly learn in due time, is no spiritual man. was this a blessed meeting? fated, even? the thought makes him laugh dryly through his nose. ]

Continuing with idioms, this has been a true twist of fate. I hail from Westeros. I am intimately aware of the Asshai'i. It is... very much a pleasure to meet you.

[ more than she'd probably understand. ]

[ He huffs and raises his head a bit at that, because his manners are just fine! As n, he doesn't need a lecture from any creature as far as he's concerned. But he settles for a scowl rather than lashing back, because he can't transform the way he usually can and... well, he's a little intimidated. ]

If you yelled that, I would eat you before you finished speaking.

[ Intimidated, but still a selfish, haughty little worm of a beast. ]

I am known as Ao Lengshan.

[Josh and North are definitely capable, passionate about the freedom of their people than most, but it's also difficult for Simon to think of them getting along in terms of method. It didn't matter so much when they were just slowly fading away in Jericho, but with Markus trying to get them out in the light, suddenly it's very important.

But it's not surprising to Simon that Markus would believe in them both, so he smiles a bit weakly at him.]

...I honestly can't imagine them agreeing on anything without you to lead them. They're both really stubborn.
